ESPN3.com will provide a live video stream of sessions I and II on Thursday, March 17, and session III on Friday. Sessions III, IV and V will also air live on ESPNU on March 18 and 19. The fi nals will air live on ESPN and ESPN3.com on Saturday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Building a TraditionHead Coach Mark Cody has created a new tradition of excellence at American University, building champions both on the mat and in the classroom. Under his guidance, eleven student-athletes have earned All-America status since 2005 and in 2007, Josh Glenn, ‘08 captured the program’s fi rst national championship. Cody’s leadership has also extended beyond the wrestling room as 14 student-athletes have earned Academic All-America status since 2005 and the team has been named the NWCA Champions of the Classroom twice.

Setting a New StandardAmerican has placed as high as 14th at the NCAA Championships, doing so last season, and this year will be looking for the program’s fi rst top ten fi nish. The Eagles will send one returning All-American to the tournament in Steve Fittery, who earned the honor for the fi rst time in 2010. American’s lineup will also include three-time qualifi er Ryan Flores and two-time qualifi er Daniel Mitchell, as well as fi rst time qualifi ers Patrick Graham, Matt Mariacher and Ganbayar Sanjaa.

Starting SixAmerican will be sending a program record six student-athletes to the 2011 NCAA Championships, topping the previous record of fi ve set in 2010. Senior Ryan Flores will be making his third appearance at the tournament, while senior Steve Fittery and sophomore Daniel Mitchell return for the second consecutive year. Juniors Matt Mariacher and Ganbayar Sanjaa, and sophomore Patrick Graham will each be making their fi rst appearance.

Moving on UpSenior Steve Fittery will be looking to become an All-American for the second straight year. Fittery earned his fi rst All-America honor last season by placing 5th at 157 lbs. He transferred to American from Shippensburg University, where he was a two-time NCAA Division II runner-up. He enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed this season, and was ranked No. 1 by the InterMat College Rankings for 15-consecutive weeks.

Joining Elite CompanyBy earning All-America status at this year’s NCAA Championships, senior Steve Fittery will become just the fourth Eagle to earn multiple All-America honors. Kyle Borshoff, ‘10, Mike Cannon, ‘10, and Josh Glenn, ‘08, are currently the only multiple All-Americans in program history. If he advances to the fi nals, he has a chance to become the second student-athlete ever to win a National Championship.

Making a StatementAmerican crowned three champions at the 107th EIWA Championships. Senior Steve Fittery and juniors Ryan Flores and Matt Mariacher each won their individual weight classes, marking the fi rst-time the Eagles have had three title winners. Flores’ title was the second of his career while Fittery and Mariacher earned their fi rst. Flores won the 2009 EIWA Championship while wrestling for Columbia University.

Head Coach Mark Cody is the man behind the American University Wrestling team’s rise to national prominence. In just eight years of coaching, Cody has rebuilt a program that was on the brink of elimination from collegiate

athletics into a team producing both athletic and academic All-Americans, EIWA Champions, and the program’s fi rst ever National Champion.

During the 2009-10 season, Cody led fi ve Eagles to the NCAA Championships where three earned All-America status. Seniors Kyle Borshoff and Mike Cannon and junior Steve Fittery were the three All-America honorees who set a new program record and helped the Eagles tie for the seventh most honors at the NCAA Championships. American recorded 38.5 points at Nationals fi nishing 14th, setting a program record. Since 2005, the Eagles have sent 11 student-athletes to the NCAA podium and they rank second with the most All-America honors, with 11, in the EIWA. Cannon and former teammate Josh Glenn, ’08, are the only three-time All-Americans in program history, as well as American’s only four-time NCAA Championships qualifi ers. The Eagles were the second-highest placing team in the EIWA at Nationals. Cody’s Eagles received the second highest GPA in Division I wrestling with a combined 3.296 GPA while Cannon, Jasen Borshoff, and Fittery were named NWCA Academic All-Americans. American is the only team to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and fi nish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships each of the last fi ve years.

Cody led three Eagles to the 2009 NCAA Championships where juniors Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff earned All-America status. As a team, American fi nished in 29th place at nationals, sixth at the EIWA Championships and eighth at the Midlands Championships. The Eagles were also named the NWCA Champions of the Classroom for the second-

consecutive year, having attained the highest team GPA in all Div. I wrestling with a combined 3.28 GPA while Cannon and Andrew Silber were named NWCA Academic All-Americans. American’s dual meet record of 11-5 from the 2008-09 season marked its best record since the 2005-06 campaign.

Cody’s Eagles earned their fi rst NWCA Champions of the Classroom honor during the 2007-08 season. Jasen Borshoff, Cannon, Josh Glenn and Christopher Stout were each named NWCA Academic All-Americans, marking the most individual Academic All-America honors AU had ever received in a single year. The Eagles also excelled on the mat, sending all four Academic All-American’s to the NCAA Championships where Cannon and Glenn both earned All-America status. Cannon became just the second underclassmen in AU history to earn AA status with a sixth-place fi nish at 165 lbs. and Glenn earned the distinction for the third straight year with a fi fth-place showing at 197 lbs.

During the 2006-07 season, Cody’s team reached an unparalleled high as junior Josh Glenn repeated as the EIWA Champion at 197 lbs. and swept through the NCAA Championships as the No. 2 seed. He went 5-0 and earned a 6-4 overtime decision over No. 1 Kurt Backes of Iowa to capture American’s fi rst National Championship. He was joined by freshmen No. 10 Mike Cannon and Kyle

Borshoff and sophomore Rudy Rueda at the tournament,

marking American’s largest showing and tying its then-best fi nish of 17th. At the EIWA Tournament, the squad tied for sixth and put two wrestlers in the fi nals, Glenn and Cannon. The squad also included two Academic A l l - A m e r i c a n s , Damian Swietlik and Mike Cannon, and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award at the EIWA Tournament.

were recognized with All-America honors. Senior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov took third place at 165 lbs. at the NCAA Championships and sophomore Josh Glenn became the fi rst underclassman to earn honors with his fourth-place fi nish at 184 lbs. The pair’s performances coupled with Adam LoPiccolo’s one win by fall earned the team a 17th-place fi nish. At the EIWA Championships, Abdurakhmanov was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as he and Glenn each won individual titles. In the classroom, Abdurakhmanov and Matt Morkel earned NWCA Academic All-America honors and the team earned the NWCA Team Academic All-America Award. In addition, the Eagles won 13 of their 19 dual matches and placed three wrestlers in the top-10 during the year.

In the 2004-05 season, American earned its fi rst ever All-American award when senior Daniel Waters placed eighth at the NCAA Championships. Joining Waters at the NCAA Championships that year was a then school-record three teammates, including AU’s fi rst-ever EIWA champion, fourth-ranked Abdurakhmanov. The EIWA 2004 Freshman of the Year and runner-up at 184 lbs., Glenn, and heavyweight LoPiccolo also qualifi ed for the big stage by way of their high placings at EIWAs. As a team the Eagles had their highest fi nish at EIWAs, placing sixth out of 13 teams.

A year earlier, Cody led a team which continued to show improvement. Waters recorded the most wins in Division I that year, with a 32-5 overall record. Senior Jared Hyman fi nished his season with 24 wins, winning 10 of 11 matches.

In his fi rst year, Cody led AU to the EIWA Tournament and was also a coach for the 2003 U.C. National Championship Gator Club team. That same year Cody introduced the highly successful Mark Cody Wrestling Camp, providing a series of individualized workouts for athletes of all ages and abilities.

Cody came to American after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, a national powerhouse and owner of more NCAA Championships than any other school. Cody helped Oklahoma State to a Big 12 Championship and

a fi fth-place fi nish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, where they crowned an individual national champion and four All-Americans. In addition, the squad earned recognition from the NWCA as a top-25 academic team, and two were named Academic All-America by the NWCA. Nine were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 team.

Before joining Oklahoma State, Cody served as upper-weights coach for 12 years at the University of Nebraska. During his time in Lincoln, he was responsible for bringing in some of the nation’s best recruiting classes, including two National Champions, 1995 heavyweight champion Tolly Thompson and 2000 197 lbs. champion Brad Vering. Vering later became a two-time Olympian with Cody in his corner at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials when he qualifi ed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. While at Nebraska, 23 Cornhuskers were named All-America.

Cody spent a season as an assistant coach of Oklahoma State for the 1986-87 season. He was also an assistant at Bloomsburg University during the 1985-86 season and for his alma mater, the University of Missouri in 1984-85 where he helped develop Rulon Gardner, who later captured the heavyweight gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and trained with 2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland.

As a student-athlete, Cody was a three-time All-American. He spent two years at the State University of New York at Delhi before transferring to Missouri in 1983. His greatest success came during his senior season, 1984-85, when he earned All-America status and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Cody still ranks in Missouri’s single season top-10 for falls (17) and winning percentage (.875). He graduated from Bellevue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

A member of the New York Athletic Club, he was a 198 lbs. fi nalist at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Cody and his wife Holly now reside in the Washington, D.C., metro area, with their sons George, Charlie and Henry.
