Who We Are…

HISTORY

The National Black MBA Association was created in 1970 by a group ofMBA candidates from the University of Chicago. Their mission was toestablish a premier organization for African-American students andprofessionals to network and enhance their professional careers. As aresult of their commitment, hard work and dedication, the Association hasestablished 45 professional chapters, 27 collegiate chapters, and oneinternational chapter in Toronto, Canada.

In 1976, visionary African-American MBA professionals founded the "BlackMBA Association of Washington, D.C." This group became a member ofthe National Black MBA Association, Inc. (NBMBAA) in 1982. Today, theWashington, D.C. Chapter has a membership of more than 800, and is thesecond largest chapter of the Association.

President’s Message

On behalf of The National Black MBA Association, Inc. -Washington DC Chapter, I would like to thank you forattending our 27th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala.

Tonight, we take a moment to recognize our Leaders ofTomorrow, undergraduate and graduate scholarshiprecipients as they have "Powered Up Their Path to Success"through academic achievement. With the support of our

corporate and collaborative partners, we will be providing them withscholarship awards valued at more than $100,000. We also pause torecognize our award recipients for the commitment they have shown tothe Chapter and Washington, D.C. community this year.

In addition to honoring our scholarship and award recipients, we also takethis opportunity to celebrate another successful year for the WashingtonDC Chapter. In 2011, we have grown the membership by 45%, and wenow have more than 800 financial members. The Washington DC Chapterwas also recognized at the 2011 Conference in Atlanta, GA for itsprogramming related to the Career Channel. This would not have beenpossible without the support of our members and corporate partners, andwe look forward to working with you for a successful 2012.

Mistress of Ceremonies: Taylor Thomas

Taylor Thomas is the local News Anchor forthe Steve Harvey Morning Show on 96.3WHUR. Taylor is a veteran news journalistwith over 15 years of experience deliveringnews that matters. In 2003, Taylor Thomasjoined the Award Winning WHUR NewsDepartment. She wears several hats atWHUR including producer/host of “Let’s Talk

Money” on WHUR World HD2, host of “PML- People, Money & Life” onWHUR Voices Sirius XM Channel 141, News Reporter for WHUR World’s “MixShow” and she’s also the community reporter for WHUR’s Weekend Hapsprogram with Tony Richards.

Over the last decade, Taylor has traveled the country, bringing viewersthe latest information from political conventions & elections to naturaldisasters like the historic flooding of New Orleans.

Taylor Thomas played a key role in reporting the September 11th attacksas it unfolded for listeners in Washington, D.C. and 32 other nationalmarkets. Following that tragic day, she returned home to Maryland to bewith her family.

Taylor Thomas is a graduate from the University of Maryland at CollegePark with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication and aminor in Radio, Television and Film. She is dedicated to uplifting andeducating others about health, money and social issues.

Keynote Speaker: Jeff Johnson

Jeff Johnson is a Washington, DC-based,award-winning investigative journalist, socialactivist, and political commentator.

From his celebrated conversations withmarquee world figures in politics, businessand entertainment, his grassroots work toinspire the next generation of leaders, hisBET specials, and weekly commentaries onthe nationally syndicated Tom JoynerMorning Show, to his work as CEO of Jeff’sNation, LLC, Johnson has established himself

as an authentic voice for change and a trailblazing social entrepreneur.

As a MSNBC contributor and White House correspondent for The Grio, an AfricanAmerican web site owned by NBC, Johnson covers important issues facing the nation.

Johnson has spent the last decade merging the worlds of politics and popular culture,including formerly serving as senior advisor for Media and Youth Outreach for People forthe American Way, national director of the Youth & College division of the NAACP, andas vice president of the Russell Simmons Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN).

The only US reporter to receive an exclusive post-inauguration interview with EllenJohnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first electedfemale president, Johnson is also one of only two news correspondents to receive anexclusive interview with Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir, who has not grantedinterviews with US media outlets for thirteen years.

Omar Saibou ($1,000)

Omar is a 2011 graduate at McKinley Technology High School and lives inWashington, DC. He would like to become a sports broadcaster. Omarserved as LOT Senior Class Managing Director for 2010-2011.

Imani Yvonne Charles ($750)

Imani is a 2011 graduate of Wilson High School, located in Washington,D.C. She is currently a freshman at Albright College. Imani's life philosophyis “Life is whatever you make of it, and if you spend your time sittingaround and watching it fly by, then you will have a lifetime of regrets.”Imani served as LOT Chief Financial Officer for 2010-2011.

For 20 years, National Black MBA Association members have beenmentoring high school students all across the country - helping themintegrate professional development into their lifestyles, prepare forcollege, learn how to effectively network, and above all, give back totheir communities, and raise their level of expectation.

Mentors work with 8-12 grade students in a systematic way to build thecompetencies necessary for success through local chapter programming,the national conference, and the Leaders of Tomorrow National BusinessCase Competition.

Crystal Moore ($2,500 Graduate Scholarship)

A native of Collinsville, MS, Crystal is a First-Year MBA Candidate at DukeUniversity's Fuqua School of Business. Prior to business school, she participated inthe ProInspire Fellowship Program; a co-hort of outstanding business professionalswho spend one year working in a strategic or analytical role at a nonprofit orpublic-sector organization in Washington D.C. As a ProInspire Fellow for theDistrict of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), she conducted the necessary analysisto make data-driven decisions that forward the districts’ reform efforts ofbecoming the preeminent urban school system in America. Crystal started hercareer as a Corporate Finance Analyst with Accenture in Washington, DC. Thereshe worked in the Health and Public Service Operating Group managingconsulting and outsourcing contracts and business units for public sector clients.Crystal graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in BusinessAdministration-Finance from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2007; where sheserved as Student Body President and was the recipient of the Saint KatharineDrexel Award, the University’s highest student honor. She has been a passionatevolunteer and member of several non-profit organizations throughout her career,including College Summit, Junior League of Northern Virginia, and Greater DCCares. Additionally, she currently serves as the Chair for Xavier University’s YoungAlumni Board.

Dionna Ross ($1,500 Undergraduate Scholarship)

Dionna is a freshman at Delaware State University (DSU), majoring in GeneralManagement. She is a Washington DC native. She recently made the HonorsProgram at DSU. Her hobbies are singing, shopping, dancing and spending timewith family and friends.

Janae Nelson ($1,000 Undergraduate Scholarship)

Janae is originally from Takoma Park, MD, and she is a freshman at the Universityof Maryland, College Park. While her major is currently undecided, she isconsidering double majoring in English and Business. She is a member of theMaryland Filmmakers Club, the Black Student Union, and the Black BusinessAssociation. Her hobbies include reading and writing short stories, poems, andsongs.

George Washington University/NBMBAA-DCScholarship Recipients

Emma Fofanah - Class of 2013

Emma is a full-time MBA student focusing on international business and finance.A native of Sierra Leone, she plans to work in the field of economicdevelopment; particularly in finance and private sector development. Prior toschool, Ms. Fofanah was a Sustainability Analyst at Calvert Investmentsimplementing Environmental Social and Governance investment risk analysis andadvocating for corporate social responsibility. She started her career atRiskMetrics Group (formerly ISS) as an account manager and was promoted tothe ESG analytics division as a research analyst and later, senior researchanalyst. Ms. Fofanah earned a BS in business administration from LongwoodUniversity in Virginia.

Joy Mangum - Class of 2013

Joy is a first-year Global MBA candidate in the George Washington UniversitySchool of Business. Joy, a graduate of the University of Virginia, began hercareer at Burson-Marsteller LLC, a leading global public relations andcommunications firm. During her tenure, Joy served as a humanresources generalist with an emphasis on training and development, benefitsadministration and employee relations. She also specialized in high volumerecruitment to source and hire diverse, quality talent in public affairs, mediarelations (traditional and digital), healthcare PR, advertising, crisis managementand grassroots communications. Joy's long-term goal is to open a consultancydevoted to best practices in business with a focus on human resourcesmanagement and diversity and inclusion.

Bilal Pasha - Class of 2013

Bilal comes to George Washington School of Business after working for T. RowePrice Retirement Plan Services for the past three years. He was responsible forselling small-market corporate retirement plans and developing a pricing andsales strategy for large and mega-market retirement plans sales. He has adegree in financial economics from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining T.Rowe Price, Bilal worked as a financial adviser for Morgan Stanley. He grew upSilver Spring, Md. He has lived in Massachusetts, California and Florida, and hasspent the past four years in Baltimore.

Rene'e Rufen-Blanchette - Class of 2013

Rene'e is currently a first year MBA student at the George WashingtonUniversity studying International Business and Community Development.Prior to pursuing her MBA degree she was a Branch Manager for CHASEbank in New York City and was in this position for the past 3 years. She hasworked in retail banking for the past 6 years and was promoted multipletimes into different management positions. After completing her BS inEconomics at SUNY Oneonta, Renee started her career in banking with afocus on community outreach and was able to develop and fostermultiple finance programs into low-income neighborhoods. She alsoworked closely with Senior Management to develop sales and marketingstrategies to increase branch presence in local communities. Renee hasa passion for community outreach, micro-financing, and corporatephilanthropy. When she is not volunteering as a mentor for Sponsors forEducational Opportunity (SEO) or for different micro-lending projects, sheis spending quality time with her family and friends, looking for the nexttravel adventure and the best place to have dessert!!

Marriott/NBMBAA-DCScholarship Recipient

Alpha Ba

Alpha is a first year MBA candidate at Howard University concentrating inFinance and Supply Chain management. He is a graduate of Drexel University'smechanical engineering program. He is also a recent graduate of HowardUniversity School of Law and just passed the bar exam, on his first try, a fewweeks ago. Alpha is from Landover, MD and enjoys playing sports, reading, andmeeting new people. After completing his MBA program, he intends to raise afund to buy and grow a technology company.

Capital One / Howard UniversityScholarship Recipients

Datrianna Meeks

Datrianna is a senior marketing major at Howard University, originally fromChicago, IL. She has held many internship positions, including working forthe Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Deloitte Consulting LLP, andLivingSocial. On campus, she is an active member of The InternationalFraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity, and she isalso a resident assistant. Upon graduation, Datrianna will go on to work asa Federal Business Analyst for Deloitte Consulting in Washington, D.C. Aftergaining work experience she plans to pursue an MBA and continue towork in the consulting field, perhaps even open her own company. In herfree time, she enjoys blogging, photography and reading.

Kristin Tellis

Voted as one of the “Top 25 Up & Comers under the Age of 25” in theCategory of Academics by the Power Broker Magazine, Kristin ispassionate about her studies. Ms. Tellis attends Howard University whereshe is an honors student in the Walter H. Annenberg Honors Programstudying Advertising and Legal Communications. On campus, she is a partof Women as Change Agents, a Student Ambassador for the Office ofAdmissions, the Co-Coordinator for the Student Council Square OneMentoring Program, and the Student Coordinator for Howard UniversityElect Her- Campus Women Win. Elect Her is a five hour training thatteaches young women leaders how to run an effective studentgovernment campaign and win. She has also attended Howard UniversityAlternative Spring Break Chicago to advocate for gun violenceawareness. In her spare time, Kristin enjoys learning sign language. Aftergraduating from Howard University, Kristin would like to work for a Fortune500 company and attend law school. Within the last couple of years, shehas served as President of her Junior Class, and Student Body President ofGibbs High School, located in her hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida.

March Madness - Participated as the Title Partner for this networking eventin collaboration with National Association of Black Accountants. Theevent has held at Bailey's in Arlington, VA.

Pre-Conference Career Expo - Participated as an exhibiting employer.

Corporate Partner Spotlight - Participated as the Title Partner for thisnetworking and recruiting event hosted at Clyde's of Gallery Place.

Scholarship & Awards Gala - Participated as a Bronze Table Partner for the2011 event.

Scholarship Program - Awarded two (2) scholarships to Howard Universitystudents as part of a pilot scholarship program. In its first year, theyreceived 36 applications.

Coalition of the Year

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) - Alumni Extension

Offering networking, development, and volunteer opportunities toprofessionals in Washington, DC, Suburban Maryland and NorthernVirginia, we are the National Society of Black Engineers Alumni ExtensionWashington DC Metropolitan Area Chapter… in short we call ourselvesNSBE-AEDC.

We are dedicated to the advancement of minority engineers andtechnical professionals in industry; promoting as well as retaining thenumber of students currently pursing engineering degrees at theundergraduate and graduate level; stimulating and developing studentinterest in science and engineering; while also supporting NSBE nationallyand locally though its DC Metropolitan student chapters.

NSBE, not solely benefiting engineers nor solely comprised of engineers, isthe premier organization of its kind in the region. This is a place whereprofessionals meet to build lasting friendships, share big ideas and invest inthe future of science, engineering, and technology. Membership in NSBE-AEDC helps one improve their career, develop leadership abilities, build anetwork, and give back to the local community!

This is done via the chapter's projects and programs that areimplemented and executed throughout the year. Such projects andprograms include Professional Development Seminars, TechnicalRoundtable Discussions, Technical Trainings, Conferences, CareerPlacement Services, Collegiate and High School Mentoring, SAT andCollege Preparatory Workshops, Community Outreach, as well as ourScholarship Programs.

Distinguished Service Award

Howard University School of Business

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Howard University School of Business is to provide a comprehensivebusiness and management education to students of high academic potential, withparticular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities for promisingAfrican-American students who may not otherwise have an opportunity to acquire aneducation of the type provided at Howard University. Further, the School is dedicated toattracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching andresearch, committed to the development of distinguished graduates and to the quest forsolutions to business and management problems in the United States and throughout theworld.

VISION STATEMENT

The vision of the School of Business is to be recognized for excellence in providing asuperior global business management education and in graduating potential leaderswith outstanding abilities, motivation, and creativity. The School of Business seeks tobecome a world leader in the development of new knowledge and solutions to majorbusiness and social problems.

Community Service Award

Dania Jolley

Dania M. Jolley is the Membership Chair of the National Black MBA Association (Mastersin Business Administration) DC Chapter and has been a consistent volunteer at all schoolsher now 8th grader has attended. Her most recent participation was the notable schoolauction and dance. At his previous schools, she held roles of Auction Committeemember for two years and Co-Chair for the School Auction. Volunteering at his schools isan important role in her and her son’s life, as demonstrated by being the current AliceDeal MS, PTA Board, Vice-President of Ways & Means. Dania has held a myriad ofexecutive level volunteer positions supporting educational campaigns, to includeHampton University Ogre Phi Ogre Reunion Committee, Benjamin Banneker High School30th Reunion Committee and Vice President of Seeking Self Success2, ScholarshipProgram. Promoting education is a priority for Dania and she has committed toencouraging future generations to pursue their dreams with a solid educationalfoundation. Dania has superb leadership and organizational skills that any group would

profit from having on their team.

Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Dr. Nicole Cutts

For over 12 years Nicole Cutts, Ph.D., licensed Clinical Psychologist, SuccessCoach, Author and Organizational Consultant has been inspiring andempowering people to achieve a more balanced and successful lifestyle. Dr.Cutts has consulted with and trained executives, managers, and teams atFortune 500 Companies, Federal Government Agencies, and Non-ProfitOrganizations. As a master facilitator and Success Coach, she helps peoplecreate an exceptional life by honoring their mind, body, and spirit so they canexperience joy, passion, meaning, and ultimate success in their work.

Dr. Cutts is a featured writer on the Walter Kaitz Foundation website and hasbeen a contributing writer for Identity Television, The Next Level, and The DiversityChannel, where she was also the Senior Features Editor. She has appeared onBET’s The Center, the BBC, Roland S. Martin’s Urban Business Roundtable andvarious radio and TV programs. She has co-authored and published severalarticles and stories in scientific and literary journals. Her writings on CorporateWellness, Success Coaching, and Diversity have appeared on several Chamberof Commerce and business websites. She formerly sat on the D.C. BarAssociation Lawyer’s Counseling Committee and the Board of the StudentSupport Center. She is a former faculty member of The University of MD-BaltimoreCounty where she taught in the Women’s Studies Dept.

An avid yoga student, her dedication to well-being and belief that well-beingshould extend to the work-place motivated her to start Cutts Consulting, LLC in2002 and Vision Quest Retreats in 2009. Since then she has been helpingorganizations and individuals clarify and achieve their Vision of Success by

utilizing a combination of lessons drawn from her years of study and experienceas a psychologist and working professional. She believes one can be productivewhile finding joy in their work.

Candice Charles

Candice Charles is a current Executive Board member of the NationalBlack MBA Association, Washington, D.C. Chapter and serves as the VicePresident of Membership. With her leadership, the Chapter's has grownfrom 555 to 805 (45% increase). She has been an active member of theorganization since 2007 when she joined as a student member. Candice isalso a mentor in the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program.

Candice has over 15 years of experience encompassing roles inorganizational development, event management, process improvement,executive management support and recruiting. She is also a Notary cont.Public in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has worked in the travel,education, government support & defense industries.

Prior to becoming a Senior Program Planning & Control Analyst in theAcquisition Program Management Group at Alion Science & Technology,she contributed to initiatives and programs that recruit and retain diverseemployees at Raytheon Company. She also became a Six SigmaSpecialist and was appointed as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Vice Presidentof an Employee Resource Group (ERG).

Candice holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from HowardUniversity and an MBA with a Specialization in Human ResourcesManagement from Strayer University. She is also a member of the Societyof Human Resources Management (SHRM), the National Association forAfrican Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR), as well as several otherprofessional organizations and has served on the board of the HowardUniversity Alumni Association Club of Northern Virginia where she resides.
