HSSM Photoday! High School Sports Magazine’s Sports Director, David “Touchdown Dave” Amador meets with players from across the Rio Grande Valley to take their photos for the 2011 Football Pre-cview magazine. Teams came to Sams Stadium in Brownsville, Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco, and Cats Stadium in Brownsville. The event was sponsored by Chick-Fil-A of the Rio Grande Valley. (Weslaco, Texas)-High School football teams came from across the Rio Grande Valley to three legend-ary stadiums to get a chance to have their photos taken for the upcoming 2011 High School Sports Magazine’s Football Preview. The event drew more than 400 athletes dressed in jerseys, pants, and some in full uniforms. “This is a great event,” said Harlingen Cardinal senior quarterback, Kevin Ledesma. “I have played football all my life with these guys. These players are like brothers to me. It doesn’t matter who you play for, it’s still a tight-knit group.” HSSM Sports Director, David “Touchdown Dave” Amador welcomed the players and one-by-one, took photos of every athlete. “These photos will be published in our magazine, website, and FaceBook. “The best part of this event is that I get to shake hands with these football players and talk to them about the hazards of texting and driving, practicing hard, and above all, being great academic students first,” says Amador. At Sams Stadium in Brownsville, Texas, athletic director Tom Chavez greeted staff members from HSSM and then took a team photo with his coaching staff. “This is great! Everything we do is for the players. They deserve this recognition,” said Chavez. HSSM also teamed up with Chick-Fil-A of the Rio Grande Valley and together, served iced-cold lemonade and Chick-Fil-A Sandwiches at each event. In all, more than 30 high schools made the annual pilgrammage to all three stadiums. “I want to thank athletic directors from Edinburg CISD, Joe Filoteo; Brownsville ISD, Tom Chavez; and Weslaco ISD, Oscar Riojas for the use of their facilities. This was a great event and we will continue to support athletes from throughout the Rio Grande Valley,” says Amador. “Students and athletes can visit our website at www.highschoolsportsmagazine.net or become our friends on Facebook/HighSchoolSportsMagazine.com.”

(Arlington,Tx)- Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones discovered just how big high school football in Texas was after hosting six UIL (University Interscholastic League (UIL) state football champiopnships in 2010 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, drawing more than 150,000 fan. Jones also welcomed the Texas High School Coaches Association’s annual coaching clinic in July and its all-star football game. In the off-season, the UIL director, Mark Cousins announced its partnership

with Cowboys Stadium, but this time, all state championship football games will be played from Class 1A through 5A. Known as America’s team because of their success and popularity, the Dallas Cowboys opened a new chapter in their legendary history with the opening of Cowboys Stadium in 2009. For more than 30 years, the Cowboys played at Texas Stadium, one of the most recognizable stadiums in football. Most recently, the Cowboys Stadium played host

to Super Bowl XLV, which was won by the Green Bay Packers. As far back as 1994, owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones, began looking into the possibility of a new or expanded Texas Stadium. Over the next several years, Jones not only kept alive discussions of renovating Texas Stadium, but began looking at sites to construct a new stadium. It took nearly a decade for the team to find a suitable site for construction, settling on a location near the Texas Rangers,

(Donna, Texas)-It’s been 50-years since the Donna Redskins won it’s first-ever State 2A Football title back in 1961 in one of the greatest comeback victories ever, by defeating Qua-nah 28-21 late in the fourth quarter. The game was played in Austin, Texas at Darrell Royal-Memorial Stadium, home of the Texas Longhorns. Since then, the Rio Grande Val-ley has been thirsting for that same moment. According to then-quarterback Luz Pedraza, the memories of that game are still fresh. “The memories are still vivid. It was cold and we were the underdogs. We were just a bunch of kids from Donna, Texas playing way over our heads. Nobody expected us to win,” says Pedraza, a now-retired educator. Pedraza led his team to two touchdowns with less than 6:00 minutes left to play after trailing 21-12. Donna fullback Fred Edwards hit the endzone twice and Pedraza scored both two-point conversions to give the Redskins a state title. That year, the Redskins started their season with two losses to Rio Grande City (0-20) and Mercedes (8-12). “Starting the season at 0-2 does not lead to state championships,” added Pedraza. “But, this team was special.” The Donna

“I had no clue about what this game meant. I was only 15-years old,” says Oscar Avila, a 5’9 160lbs defensive-end. In their first playoff game against Refugio, the Redskins dominated that game winning 32-0 but in the regional championships against Devine, the Redskins held on to a 12-7 victory and then had to score two extra points to beat Brady (16-14) in the semifinals. But, in the state championships, for Oscar, he made the biggest catch in his life and held on. “I intercepted the ball at the Quanah’s 40-yard line with less than three minutes to play, ending the Indians drive and their hopes,” added Avila. Earlier, Quanah was facing 4th and one, still ahead 21-20, at mid-field and decided to go for it but they were met by Donna’s defensive players; Fabrian Barrera and Joe Gonzalez. This opened the door for the Redskins. “All they had to do was punt,” said Oscar Avila. Pedraza, again led his team down field with Edwards scoring the winning touchdown. Pedraza add-ed his two-point conversion to make it 28-21. Ironically, the Redskins de-cided to go for it too on a 4th and one situation with about one minute left in the game and that’s when the Redskins unleashed the “Parking Lot Play.” “It was a punt-shift” play, defensive end,

Richard Avila, older brother of Oscar, who still laughs about that moment. “Our head coach Earl Scott and as-sistant, Bennie La Prade came up with the play and we practiced this play on the parking lot at Barth’s Restaurant in Kennedy, Texas before the game. We executed it at the right time and made Quanah jump off sides,” he adds. “It was our proudest moment because we lifted Coach Scott on our shoulders af-ter the game and he smiled for the first time-ever.” Pedraza says it was “pure

faith” and the “walks” they made to the shrine in San Juan after each game that kept this team together. “It was special and it was one miracle happening right after another,” he added. As the Donna Redskins prepare to celebrate 50-years since that magical moment at their upcoming homecom-ing game set for Friday, October 28th. Pedraza is humbled by all the memo-ries that he lived and shared with his teammates, coaches, teachers, and this community of less than 10,000.

2010 Class 5A Region IV finals! In Division I, San Antonio Wagner defeated Edinburg 33-12; McAllen Memorial lost to eventual state champions in Division II, Cibolo Steele 48-31; and San Antonio Stevens escaped Harlingen 31-30 in Division I. All three teams will be favored to repeat in 2011. In Class 4A Division I, Cedar Park ousted Weslaco East in the Division I Regional finals 35-7. (HSSM IMages/Special)

www.HighSchoolSportsMagazine.net

(McAllen, Texas)-Four teams from the Rio Grande Valley advanced to the third round of the state football playoffs in 2010. Those teams, Weslaco East, Harlingen, Edinburg, and McAllen Memorial could make it back-to-back in 2011, afterall, they have the talent to even go four rounds deep. The Harlingen Cardinals return as the three-time reigning 31-5A champions and have dominated high school football sidelines for the past three years by advancing to the State 5A Division I Regional finals. Head coach Manny Gomez is excited about playing in 2011 and says that “we will not take for granted playing football Fri-day nights” because Gomez understands that anything can happen on GameDay. High School Sports Magazine picks the Harlingen Cardinals as the No.1 team from South Texas and publisher Da-vid “Touchdown Dave” Amador says that this team could make a strong statement in Region IV. “The Cards return key players on offense and boast a strong punting game. On defense, they will need to come together inorder to advance past the third round in 2011,” adds Amador. In the state playoffs, the Cards lost to San Antonio Stevens in the regional finals 31-30 in double-overtime on a missed extra point. “That’s football. We play together, we lose together,” adds Gomez. In the No.2 spot, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs from 30-5A sur-prised everyone in 2010 by advancing three-rounds deep but don’t tell that to head football coach Bill Littleton. “I knew we had the talent and we could be even better this season,” says Littleton. And why not? The Mustangs return four-year starter, quarterback Mat-thew Kaufmann (5’8 165lbs). Kaufmann electrified the field with more than 3,100 total yards and 31 touchdowns. He also played wide-receiver, runningback, and free safety. “He is our go-to player but on defense, this will make a difference. We have plenty of ex-perience,” added Littleton. In the playoffs, the Mustangs defeated Eagle Pass 28-20, PSJA Memorial 42-30, before losing to Cibo-lo Steele 48-31. The Steele Knights went on to win the state title against Guyer 24-21. At No.3, the Edinburg Bob-cats finally gave head coach Joey Caceres the spotlight he deserved by winning one bi-dis-

trict and area titles for the first time in his head coaching career. The Bobcats knocked off Los Fresnos (45-7) and Sharyland (31-28) in the State 5A Division I playoffs before falling to San Antonio Wag-ner in the regional finals at the Alamodome 31-10 in 2010. Since then, the Bobcat football program has come alive with more than 280 players wanting to play for Caceres. Seven players return on defense with DB Salvador Martinez (6’0, 185lbs 6 ints) leading the way. This could be another banner year for Caceres and his Bob-cats as the fifth-year head coach will contend for a district title with Harlingen. Both teams meet September 24th at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen. “We have been working harder and these players are believing,” adds Caceres. Filling out the No.4 slot are the Weslaco East Wildcats led by head coach Armando Cuellar. The Wildcats captured its first-ever 32-4A co-championship title and then made some noise in the State 4A Division I playoffs with wins over Corpus Christi Ray (20-14), Victoria West (42-35), before losing to Cedar Park 48-7 in the re-gional finals at the Alamodome. “It was a great year and this year we have to stay focused to make it another successful year,” says Cuellar. The Wildcats are bigger and much more talented than last year’s teams. The big showdown will come between the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets for the district title on October 24th at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco. For the first time in HSSM Polls, an-other school from Weslaco is ranked right behind its sister school. The Weslaco Panthers won the 32-5A title in 2010 and went two rounds in the State 5A playoffs. The Panthers will make some noise in 2011 with its defense and stingy offense. Rounding the Top 15 are No.5 Weslaco followed by Sharyland, Edcouch-Elsa, PSJA, McAllen Nikki Rowe, Mission Veterans, San Benito, Santa Rosa, McAllen HS, Brownsville Pace, and Rio Hondo. RGV Football 2011 begins now with the Top 25 teams ranked by High School Sports Magazine. Have a great year and let’s make it to the state championships!

(Harlingen, Tx)- Manny Gomez is all about “family” and treats his players with outmost of respect. Gomez loves “Friday Night Game days” and is looking for-

ward to the 2011 season. The Cardinals return five starters on offense with quarterback senior Kevin Ledesma. The Cards went undefeated in District 31-5A and marched into the playoffs in Division I with wins over San Benito (49-14), Laredo United (49-28), before losing a heart-break-ing 31-30 loss to San Anto-nio Stevens in double-over-time. Their march towards a state championship was cut short due to a missed extra point in double-overtime. “That hurts but that’s foot-

ball,” says Gomez. In 2011, Gomez decided to take his program to the next level with games against Corpus Christi Carroll, San Benito, and the 2009 State 5A Divi-

sion II Champions, Abilene of District 3-5A. In the Ea-gles season opener against El Paso Hanks, the Eagles looked sharp winning 77-13. Last year the Eagles defeated Arlington (31-28) in th ebi-district championships and then knocked off El Paso Coronado 45-28, before los-ing in the regional finals to Southlake Carroll 38-24. Head coach Steven Warren is excited to meet Gomez and his Cardinals on Sep-tember 17th at Hereos Sta-dium in San Antonio, Texas. “This is a great program

(McAllen, Tx)-The McAl-len Memorial Mustangs finished second in District 30-5A with a 5-2 record and then marched in the State 5A Division II playoffs with

wins over Eagle Pass (28-20), PSJA Memorial (42-30), before falling to even-tual state champions, Cibolo Steele Knights 48-31 in the regional finals at the Laredo SAC Stadium in 2010. “We expect to win at Memorial and our players work hard to make practices work the effort,” says head coach Bill Littleton of McAllen Me-morial. The Mustangs opens its season at Edinburg Econo-medes (0-1) from District 31-5A and then follow that with another trip back to

Cats’ Stadium to play the Edinburg Bobcats on Sep-tember 9th before clos-ing its non-district sched-ule at home with the PSJA Bears. The Mustangs return

four-year starting quarter-back, Matthew Kaufmann, passed for more than 2,000 yards and also tallied over 3,100 total yards, includ-ing 31 touchdowns. “Hav-ing Kaufmann is a great as-set, but our defense will be much better in 2011, “ added Littleton. With eight starters back on defense, led by se-niors LB Bryan Stites (5’9, 195lbs), LB Tyler Marriott (6’1, 185lbs), and junior DT Pablo Adame (6’3, 265lbs), opposing offenses will be looking for way to break through this experienced

squad. Other players to watch are LB Garrett Sharp (6’2, 200lbs), FS Chris Wil-son (5’10, 165lbs, 112 tack-les/4 ints), and DT Rocky Benavides. On offense, the

Mustangs will be led in the backfield by FB Gabe Alo-noz (5’10, 195lbs), who scored three touchdowns against the Steele Knights. Running back Rigo Rodri-guez could see some action and will be proven. Can the Mustangs do it again in 2011? Can the Mustangs challenge and unseat the two-time defending cham-pions, Sharyland for the title? Both teams will meet on October 14th in Mission. (Edinburg, Tx)-Edinburg Bobcat head coach Joey Caceres is all business in 2011 and he has put the 2010 season behind and is eagered to start the season again. In 2010, he led the Bobcats to the State 5A playoffs, winning a bi-district championship over Los Fresnos (45-7) and followed it with an Area title win over Sharyland 31-28. He would have loved to have knocked off San Antonio Wagner in the Alamodome (31-10). With seven starters back on defense, led by defen-sive back Sal Martinez (6’0, 200lbs), and linebacker Adam Alonzo (5’10, 175lbs), this Bobcat team could be much improved. (Weslaco, Tx)-Head coach Armando Cuellar recalls the day he was assigned to the New Weslaco East Campus. “I was here to build a football program and here we are today,” says Cuellar. The Weslaco East Wildcats are in the winning mode and have become a fierce run-attack team. The Wildcats won its first-ever District 32-4A title in school history but had to share the title with Mission Veterans with 7-1 records. In the playoffs, the Wildcats ran wild behind Bobby Gonza-lez, who had more than 2,700 yards rushing for the season. The Wildcats won a bi-district title, area title, before falling to Cedar Park in the Class 4A Region IV regional finals at the Alamdome in San Antonio, Texas. This year, the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets will try to unseat the Wildcats at Bobby Lackey Stadium in When both teams meet for a possible district title on October 28th. (Mission, Tx)-The Sharyland Rattlers won the 30-5A title for the second straight season in 2010 but head coach Fred Sanchez had higher hopes for his 2010 team. They expected to go atleast three-rounds in the State 5A Division I playoffs but those dreams ended when they gave up their 28-14 lead to the Ed-inburg Bobcats, losing at the end 31-28 in area finals at McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium. In 2010, the Rattlers dominated their opponents by scoring 484 points and allowed just 198 on defense. Can they do it again? The Rattlers opened their season with a 43-14 thrashing of Brownsville Hanna from District 32-5A. Returning on offense are RB Cesar Valdez, all-purpose player, CJ Cavazos; but the Rat-tlers will be looking to replace quarterback Bobby Moran. At the helm will be Estefan Cas-tillo and against Hanna, he went 4-of-6 for 65 yards passing but the Rattlers stuck to the run-ning game, amassing 212 yards on the ground. Castillo showed that he can run too, rushing for 75 yards on 10 carries and RB Hunter Guzman added another 83-yards and two touchdowns. But that was against a team that went 1-9 in 2010. The Rattlers will be tested early on with two more non-district games against Edinburg North and Flour Bluff before they open the 2011 district season at a dan-gerous McAllen Nikki Rowe Warrior team on September 22nd followed by a home game against the Donna Redskins, who knocked off PSJA North 34-21 in its season opener.

(Edcouch, Tx)-The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets made the playoffs in 2010 after a missing the playoffs in Class 4A Division II in 2009, but head coach Joe Solis knew that at one point, you have to rebuild. That was the rebuilding year the Yellowjackets experienced and fans were disapppoint-ed too. “We had all of our junior high and sub-varsity teams winning district titles, so I knew that I had to be patient,” says Solis. The Yellowjackets posted a bi-district title win over Alice (17-15) before losing to Port Lavaca-Calhoun 42-12 in the area championships last season. “We will prob-ably meet the Sandcrabs again and they will bring a stronger too,” added Solis. But first, the Yel-lowjackets will return nine starters on offense and seven on defense. In the State 5A Division II bi-district playoffs, the Weslaco Panthers ended their playoff run, winning 35-22. In 2011, the Bears will bring back eight starters on offense, but they might be playing without last year’s QB Bryan Ramirez. “He had a shoulder injury this past summer and we are hoping that he will recover,” says Rios. But in the meantime, the Bears will depend on running back, Deandre Henry, a junior who rushed for 719 yards in 2010 along with RB teammate Fili Patino, only a sophomore. A big one too. At 6’0, 185lbs, you can bet that Rios is smiling by having Patino in the backfield with Henry. (McAllen, Tx)-Why McAllen Nikki Rowe? One reason: Paul Reyes. The second-year head football coach is a hard working and dedicated leader. Last season. Reyes guided his War-riors to a second place finish and defeated McAllen (55-53) and McAllen Memorial (27-13) to win the city championship. Not bad for a first-year head coach. In the playoffs, the Warriors lost to Laredo Al-exander 27-7 to close out its season. In 2011, the Warriors will open its season against Edinburg Economedes (62-35 win), followed by road games at PSJA North and Los Fresnos. At this point, the Warriors could be stand-ing at 3-0 before the open district play against defend-ing champions, Sharyland at home. Last year, the Rattlers dominated the Warriors 45-21, but don’t expect Reyes to fall into the same trap again. Players to watch are OL Josh Morin, OL Adonis Cruz, and maybe, even a sophomore quarterback, Justin Owens (6’2, 160lbs). Other players looking to add some spark are WR Robert Valencia, DL Alex Garcia, and WR Bryan Gonzalez. Reyes loves to run his spread offense so expect the Warriors to pass, pass, pass, and attack.

(Waco, Tx)-Sammy Baugh, Koy Detmer, Peter Gardere and six others have been named to the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Seven of the nine inductees were introduced recently during a news conference at the Tex-as Sports Hall of Fame. The inductees were honored at a ceremony Saturday night. Baugh, who died in Decem-ber 2008 at age 94, was represented by his son, David. Sammy Baugh was the last surviving member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first class in 1963. In college, he led TCU to a 29-7-3 record and wins in the Sugar and Cotton bowls. In 15 years with the Redskins, Baugh led Washington to two NFL titles. In 1943, he led the NFL in passing, punting and interceptions. In one game, he threw four touchdowns and intercepted four passes. He threw six touchdowns passes in a game twice. His 51.4-yard punt-ing average in 1940 remains the NFL record. Detmer played at Mission High School, where he threw for 8,221 yards and 82 touchdowns. At the University of Colorado, he holds the record for most touchdown passes in a year with 22. Detmer spent 10 seasons with the Phila-delphia Eagles, starting a handful of games. He is now an assistant coach at Somerset High School where his fa-ther, Sonny Detmer, is the head coach. “I’m getting a taste of Texas high school football from a little different angle now, but I love it,” he said.

(Mission, Tx)-The Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots went two rounds deep in the State 4A Divi-sion I playoffs and they also won it’s first-ever co-district title posting an impressive 10-2 record. Can head coach David Gilpin lead his Pats back in only his third season? Much will depend on senior quarterback, Adrian Morales. Last year, Morales (6’3” 200lbs) passed for 2,712 yards in the regular season and also led the Pats to a Bi-District win over CC Flour Bluff 30-24 before falling to Victoria East 54-40 in the area playoffs. In order for this to happen, they will depend on Frank Nevares, who had seven interceptions to lead his defense. In 2011, only three starters are back defense and two on offense. The Pats will be young with juniors OL Armando Alvarado and LB Hector Garza looking to fill spots. Sophomore RB Eric Hidrogo could lead them in the backfield with a much needed running game. “This will be a rebuilding year but the attitude is great here at Misison Vets. These guys play hard and they never quit,” says Gilpin. A total of 30 lettermen will be on the squad with some playing experience. The Pats open their season with Somerset (34-41 loss), followed by another non-district game with rival, Mission. Teams Season District

(Donna, Texas)-The Donna Redskins will be playing its 2011 season with plenty of heart and emotions. The Red-skins will be celebrating it’s 50th anniversary since win-ning the 1962 Class 2A State Football Championships, so every game will be inspiring as these young players will see players from the past at their games, giving them the motivation to win. Head coach Manny Moreno started off the season with a 34-21 win over PSJA North on August 25th and if this is any indication of what the Redskins will bring, teams will need to be ready. The Redskins will play host to Nikki Rowe, McAllen, and McAllen Memorial. All, State 5A playoff teams from 2010. Home-field advantage with all the fanfare will boost the Redskins confidence. The Redskins will entertain McAllen Memorial on Octo-ber 28th for Homecoming. It will be homecoming for the 1962 state champions too. “This was a big victory for us tonight. It takes one win from the start of the season to start the undefeated season,”said Moreno, after their win over PSJA North. With the Redskins looking for a playoff spot, that leaves three spots open. Teams favored are Sharyland, McAllen Memorial, and McAllen Nikki Rowe. All three teams made the playoffs last year, with only the Mustangs advancing to the State 5A Division II Regional finals. Head coach Bill Littleton

feels that his team will be contenders for the district title. The last time they won it was back in 2008. Before the Mustangs think that they can do it, they must first dethrone the two-time defending champs, Sharyland Rattlers. Last year, the Rattlers lost a heart breaker in the Class 5A Area Championships to Edinburg (31-28) after leading 28-14 in the fourth quarter. Can the McAllen Bulldogs improve in 2011? The Bull-dogs started its season at 0-5, but managed to slip into the state playoffs by winning four of their last five games. The problem with the Bulldogs has been defense. The Dogs gave up 333 points to its opponents but head coach Tony Harris knows that he will be faced with the same problems again with only four starters back. He hopes that senior quarter-back Justin Salinas will be able to put points on the board to offset the defensive efforts. The Bulldogs scored 351 points last season. Players to watch are CB Phillip Cantu, OT Ce-sar Mirelez, kicker Jose Arzarte, C Ben Saenz, and LB Jose Gonzalez. The Mission Eagles third-year head coach Mario Pena went 4-6 last season and finished 2-5 in district play af-ter winning the 32-4A title in 2009. Then, the Eagles were moved to 30-5A with the new realignments. The Eagles could surprise some teams in 2011, but with McAllen Nikki Rowe, Sharyland, Donna, Palmview, and McAllen

all legimate contenders, the Eagles will have their work cutout for them every Fri-day night. The La Joya Palmview Lo-bos missed the playoffs by one game and head coach Manuel Flores say they will be “much improved” while sister school, La Joya will struggle. District 31-5A is one of the toughest districts in the state. In 2010, the Harlingen Cardinals and Edinburg Bobcats both advanced to the State 5A Divsion I Regional Finals, while PSJA Memorial made it to the area playoffs. PSJA was ousted in bi-district.

The Cards and Bobcats will play for the district championship on September 23rd in HSSM’s Farmers Insurance Game of the Week at Boggus Stadium, which leaves two slots open for two teams. PSJA, Edinburg North, and Harlingen South all look good and two teams will get the final spots. With the Raiders rebuilding and the Cougars coming alive, not much will be left for the Jags in 2011. It’s just a tough district. For Gabe Pena, he would love to make the playoffs. An assistant head coach from Weslaco, Pena knows how to win. He will turn around this Jag program, but not in 2011. Don’t count out the PSJA Memorial Wolverines, they could surprise teams.

Teams Season District(Weslaco, Tx)-The Weslaco Panthers finally won its first district championship since 1991 and they did it by going undefeated with underclassmen too. Now, the Panthers return fif-teen starters, eight on offense. Head coach Tony Villarreal knows that they must be ready on game night because their opponents will be playing them harder. “We have to get ready and play some football. I’m real excited and this team could better than the 2008 team that went three rounds,” says Villarreal. The Panthers will be play Mercedes (16-3), Alice, and Harlin-gen South before they enter district play against Los Fresnos at Bobby Lackey Stadium on September 23rd. This will be the real test for the Falcons after making the playoffs in 2010 under head coach Clint Finley. The Falcons return CB Chris Almanzan, OL Armando Her-nandez, OL Joe Rodriguez, DE Joe Perez, WR Christian Lozoya, and RB Eduardo Ramirez. Last year, the Panthers defeated the Falcons on their turf, winning 21-14 and went unchal-lenged thorughout the rest of the year scoring 506 points on offense and allowing just 209 points defensively. Head coach Villarreal will run the ball. He has nine different running backs that he can choose from too. Lionel Anciso, Johnathon Montes, will both get most of the carries while quarterback Carlos Madrigal will be the signal caller. Brownsville Pace will be the team to watch, despite losing to Weslaco 42-7 last season. Head coach Rene Medrano is excited about his team’s work ethics and attitude. “We are getting ready for the season and it will be interesting too,” says Medrano. If the Vikings can beat San Benito and Los Fresnos early on, this will set up a showdown at Sams Stadium on November 5th when they host the Weslaco Panthers for the district title. The Vikings defeated the Greyhounds 26-11 and then lost to Los Fresnos 35-31 in 2010. With Weslaco and Pace favored to finish in the top two, that leaves Los Fresnos and San Benito, along with Brownsville Rivera fighting for the final two spots. The Raiders finished their season at 4-6 and were edged out by San Benito fo rth efinal playoff spot at 4-3. Head coach David Cantu would love to see that change. “We return seven starters but we have to fill some key spots,” he adds. Leading the Raiders are OL Hector Orozco (6’4, 340 lbs), and DL Mike Galvan (6’0, 255lbs). At quarterback, junior Osiel Benavides could fill that slot. But count out the San Benito Greyhounds from clinch-ing a playoff spot. Head coach Spencer Gantt will have seven starters back on defense with hopes of improving last season’s 318 points they gave up on defense. Losses to Weslaco East (47-6), Harlingen (45-21), Flour Bluff (35-19) had the Hounds barking at 0-3 in its first three games of the season. They were also 1-6 at the start of the season. Wins over Rivera, Lopez, Porter, and Hanna clinched the final playoff for the Greyhounds. Teams rebuilding in 2011 are the Hanna Eagles (1-9), Porter (3-7), and Brownsville Lopez Lobos (1-9). Eagles head coach Tom Campos will see six starters back on offense and seven on defense, while Lobos head coach Michael Ramirez has five returning on both sides. Cowboys head coach

Hector Garcia has seven starters back on offense with hopes of improving the 197 points they scored last year. “We need to imoroved on offense and hopefully our ex-perince will show this season,” says Garcia.

Teams Season District

(Weslaco, Tx)-What can football fans expect from District 32-4A? Excitement. And plenty too. Last year, the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow-jackets knocked off Mission Vet-erans 21-13, handing the Weslaco East Wildcats a share of the 32-4A title. What a gift. “It’s not how I wanted to get it, but we’ll take it,” said Wildcat head coach Armando Cuellar. Expect the same scenario

in 2011. Every game will make a dif-ference and with nine teams crowding this district, this opens the doors for atleast five teams. Mission Veterans returns the best quarterback in the re-gion. Adrian Morales will have to play smarter with only two starters back on offense. The Pats will be young while the East Wildcats, Mercedes Tigers, and Edcouch-Elsa will bring plenty of experience on game day. The Wildcats return eight starters on offense that went to the Class 4A Di-vision I Regional finals at the Alam-dome. The Wildcats are riding high with confidence. The Wildcats are big and aggressive. Players to watch will be QB John Arevalo, OT Carlos Cuel-lar (6’1, 275lbs), OG Edgar Trejo (5’9, 235lbs), OL Christian Garcia (6’1, 255lbs), TE Jose Lopez (6’2, 230lbs), and WR Eli Urbina (6’4, 205). Urbina looks like the player that will stand out and could have a break-out season too. Just north of Weslaco are the Ed-couch-Elsa Yellowjackets. Head coach Joe Solis has won six titles in 32-4A and he would love to make it seven. “I’m excited about this season. We have high expectations with plen-ty of experience,” says Solis. Like the Wildcats, these Jackets are huge and physical. On offense, Juan Rodriguez (6’3, 280lbs) will anchor the line with quarterback Eric Morales (6’0, 185lbs) and RB Alonzo Toscano (850-yards, 12 tds) right behind. On defense, play-ers to watch are DE Luis Hernandez and DT Alvin Lofton. Both Weslaco East and Edcouch-Elsa meet on Oc-tober 28th for a district showdown at Bobby Lackey Stadium while Mission

Veterans will host Mercedes on September 23rd. The Tigers are much improved and made it to the State 4A playoffs in 2010. Head coach Mike Uribe will find a way to get his Tigers ready on game day. They could surprise teams too. Defense will be the Tiger’s strengths. Players to watch are OL Grandy Young (6’4, 295lbs), OL Chris Rodriguez (6’0, 265lbs), with defensive players LB Allan Esc-obedo, LB Geraldo Perez, and DB David Gonzales giving the Tigers plenty of growls. The Tigers have three quarterbacks that could see action and hope-fully Uribe will be find one that will be ready for their first district game against Rio Grande City on September 8th, followed by their meeting at home with Weslaco East on September 18th.

Teams Season District

(McAllen, Tx)-Last year, the Port Isabel Tar-pons and Rio Hondo Bobcats both shared the 32-3A title at 4-1. Both teams lost in the first round of the State 3A Division II bi-district championships. The Bobcats lost a close one to 31-3A champions, Raymondville 42-35, while the Tarpons were bullied by Robstown 27-7. In Class 3A Division I, the Zapata Hawks ended their season in the first round to Corpus Christi Miller 48-33. So what can 32-3A expect in 2011? All three teams will be challenged by La Feria. New head coach Oscar Salinas takes over a program which returns five starters on offense and sev-en on defense. Salinas has turned this program around despite all the coaching changes that has taken place in past two years. He’s the fourth coach now. The Lions return several lineback-ers that could give opponents problems on Fri-day nights. Players to watch are LB Jesse Ra-mon, Edward Cantu, and Frank Arispe. Is there another team that can bolt into ac-tion and make a run at the playoffs? No. The Progreso Red Ants are low in numbers but ninth-year head coach Elvis Hernandez re-mains optimistic that this year, they will be

much improved with nine starters back on offense and seven on de-fense. Could this be enough to get the Red Ants in the playoffs after finishing 3-7 last year? On the other end, the Rio Grande City La Grulla Gators are on the rise and they could surprise many teams in 2011. Second-year head coach Abel Gonzales is a true competi-tor. They defeated Zapata in the district’s biggest upset of the year, winning 33-32. The remarkable thing, the Gators lost to La Feria 36-29 and Port Isabel 21-19 by close margins. But, the biggest question remains: Can Rio Hondo win it all in 2011? Head coach Rocky James thinks so. “We have experience and plenty of returning starters,” says James, now in his second season. Quarterback John Puga will lead the Bobcats and is regarded as one of the area’s top players. Puga ‘s favorite tar-gets will be Shawn O’Brien (6’2,

195lbs) and Jorge Bermundez (5’11, 190lbs). Tarpon head coach, Monty Stumbaugh will lead a team that returns only four starters on both sides of the field, while Zapata returns six on each side. The edge for the final playoff spot would have to go to the Hawks. While the La Grulla Gators will hopeful-ly see a first-ever playoff spot, if they can beat Zapata on November 4th in Rio Grande City. This game will be a showcase and a must-see-game. As for the Lions? They will go head-to-head at home with Rio Hondo for the district title on Oc-tober 14th. Home-field advantage?
