Caleb Westfall was among 61 outstand-ng 4-H youth honored this summer at the011 Achievement Awards and Scholarshipanquet held at the Nationwide and Ohioarm Bureau 4-H Center at The Ohio Stateniversity. Awards and scholarships val-

ed over $92,000 were awarded.Westfall was awarded the Ohio 4-Heat Goat Achievement Award and will

travel to Atlanta, Ga., this fall to representOhio at the National 4-H Congress.

Caleb will join other 4-H members fromacross the nation to learn and practice citi-zenship, leadership and service skills. Toearn this honor, these youth competedagainst over 350 4-H members, betweenthe ages of 14 and 18, who completed anextensive application listing their accom-plishments in 4-H project work, 4-H par-ticipation, major 4-H honors, 4-H commu-nity service and citizenship, 4-H leadershipand non 4-H experiences in their school,church and community.

This event will conclude Caleb’s 10 out-tanding years in 4-H.

Caleb was also awarded the Charles andwyenna Lifer 4-H Scholarship to be used

oward his studies as he attends The Ohiotate University this fall to pursue a major

n animal science or pre-vet medicine.Caleb began his 4-H adventure in 2002hen he distinguished himself as a state

fair qualifier in beginning archery. He’sbeen very busy with his 4-H animal proj-ects ... he began with market goats that firstyear and for the next nine years. He hastaken breeding goats, seven years; marketsheep, six years; feeder calves, five years.

Caleb has worked hard and achieved:Goat Showmanship: Junior, 2003;Intermediate, 2005; Senior, 2006; County,2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010; SheepShowmanship: Junior, 2006; Senior, 2007;County, 2008, 2009, 2010; ProjectKnowledge Award in Goats, 2003-2005,2007 and 2011; Sheep, 2007, 2009 and2011; Beef, 2007 and 2009; SupremeCounty Showmanship Reserve Champion,2007, 2009 and 2010.

He has had the Grand CharmpionMarket Goat in 2006, 2007 and 2010;Reserve Champion Market Goat in 2008;and Grand Champion Market Lamb in2010.

This year Caleb had the 2011 OverallGrand Champion Full Blood Doe at theOhio State Fair.

This veteran 4-H’er has also served onthe Junior Fairboard for three years and asa 4-H counselor for five years.

His favorite part of his 4-H experience

has been breeding and showing his animals

Westfall’s latest triumph inthe breeding area is the offspring of ZAX23-The Intimidator, which wasrecently chosen as the National ReserveChamion Full Blood Buck at the ABJNational Show in West Monroe,Louisiana. ZAZ01-Maximizer, was soldto Aaron and Denise Crabtree of Chillicothe, who exhibited the buck at thenational competition.

As Caleb brings his 4-H experiences toan end, he will take the knowledge andleadership skills he has attained duringthe past 10 years to his future endeavorswhich begin at The Ohio State University

this fall.

Youth Pedal Pull Set for Friday AfternoonA youth pedal pull contest will be held

on Friday, August 26 at 2 p.m. in the

Rabbit and Poultry Barn. The contest is

open to youth in grades six or younger.

There will be a $1 per person entry fee.

Prizes will be awarded in the following

weight classes: 0-45 lbs., 46-55 lbs.,; 56-

65 lbs.; and 66-85 lbs.

The top three contestants in each class

will receive trophies sponsored by the

Junior Fairboard. Bring your young pedal

puller and watch them have some fun.

The Ohio State Fair is well known for its

livestock shows and exhibition of 4-H

youth projects. The fair was held in

Columbus July 27-Aug. 7 and provided
