    A TRIBUTE TO SPARKY

The Detroit Tigers family suffered a great loss with

the passing of Hall of Fame manager Sparky

Anderson on November 4, 2010. Anderson managedat the major league level for 26 seasons, including 17

with the Tigers from 1979-95. He recorded 1,331

victories as the Tigers manager, the most in franchise

history, and led the club to a World Series title during

    the 1984 season.

Anderson played professionally for 11 seasons asan infielder in the Brooklyn Dodgers, Los Angeles

    Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians,

    Milwaukee Braves and Washington Senators

organizations. He played at the major league level for

one season, seeing action in 152 games with the

Phillies during the 1959 season. He retired as a

player following the 1963 season and began hismanagerial career at the helm of the Triple A Toronto

Maple Leafs in the International League. He managed

pennant-winning clubs at Single A and Double A each

of the next four seasons before being hired as thethird base coach for the San Diego Padres during

    their inaugural 1969 season.

Following his one season as a coach at the major

league level, the Cincinnati Reds tabbed Anderson as

their manager on October 8, 1969. At 36 years old

when the 1970 season began, he was the youngest

manager in the major leagues at the time and a

relative unknown. He wasted little time making aname for himself, guiding the Reds to 102 victories

and a trip to the World Series. He led the Big Red

Machine to the World Series four times during hisnine seasons at the helm, winning back-to-back

World Series titles in 1975 and 1976.

Anderson managed the Reds through the 1978

season and began the final chapter of his managerial

career as the manager of the Detroit Tigers during

the 1979 season. Unlike the star-laden clubs he

guided in Cincinnati, his Detroit club was full of young

players who had yet to make a name for themselves

at the major league level. His 1979 roster included

Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Dan Petry,Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

The core group of players learned the game underhis guidance and in 1984 put together one of the

greatest seasons in franchise history. The 1984 club

posted a 35-5 record in the first 40 games and led the

American League East from start to finish. The Tigers

swept the Kansas City Royals in the American

League Championship Series and then defeated the

San Diego Padres in five games to claim Detroits

first World Series title since 1968.

    A TRIBUTE TO SPARKY

The Tigers went on to make the playoffs again in

1987 with Anderson at the helm and he remains the

franchises all-time leader in games managed (2,579)

and wins (1,331). He was twice named AmericanLeague Manager of the Year (1984, 1987) and was

also the first manager in major league history to win

100-or-more games in a season in both leagues andthe first manager to win a World Series title in both

leagues. He was inducted into the National Baseball

    Hall of Fame in 2000.

In addition to his 17 seasons as the Tigers manager,

he left a lasting impact on the community through

CATCH, a childrens charity he founded in 1987.

CATCH raises funds to provide a current and future

source of revenue to help improve the quality of life forsick, injured and at-risk pediatric patients who receive

care from Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry

    Ford Hospital.

On January 22, 2011, the Tigers announced that the

club will retire Andersons number 11 during aceremony during the 2011 season. His number will be

the sixth retired by the Tigers, joining Charlie

Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Willie Horton, Al Kaline

and Hal Newhouser in receiving the honor.

Additionally, the Tigers will wear a patch bearing his

name and number throughout the spring and regularseasons and a commemorative flag will be raised at
