All but Patten agreed the city needs to do a better job running itself like a business.
“You run a government like a government and a business like a business,” Patten said. “Cities are not for-profit corporations.”
“Government isn’t run by big business,” said Lefe-bvre. “It’s run by politicians with special interests. If it was run by a business we would not be trillions of dollars in debt. It should be run like a business be-cause it is a business.”
It’s the politicians who “forgot we are the stock-holders in this company, and we are not getting any dividends,” he said.
“It is like a business,” Anderson said. “You have so much coming in and so much going out. Un-fortunately, sometimes you have to ask for taxes. We need to maximize revenues to offset the services we desire.”
“There isn’t an easy fix,” Sherman agreed. “We still have a little fat to trim. We’re just going to have to work our way out of it.”
He’d like to see the re-serve fund, which is at its lowest level in four years, increased again, and said he was open to raising taxes at some point to accomplish that goal.
Asked what they are most proud of about the
city, Sherman said it’s the residents who “step up to the plate” to get things done.
A relative newcomer to Venice, Lefebvre said he didn’t have anything to be proud of yet, “but if I can lower taxes I will be proud of that.”
Anderson cited the city’s philanthropic groups, historic groups and art.
“I’m most proud of the community willing to donate their time and expertise for the ben-efit of the community,”
Anderson said.Patten said it was the
employees who fed him information “and begged me to keep them anony-mous” while researching alleged inappropriate city activity for his website.
“I’m thought of as a primarily negative kind of guy, finding horrendous things and trying to cor-rect them,” he said. “That’s a lot of responsibility.”
Anderson was asked about a confrontation over election signs with a neighbor last week. An-
derson, who was holding a constituent event at his home one evening, said he asked the neighbor to temporarily move an election sign that sup-ports another candidate. His wife reportedly made the same request. The neighbor later com-plained to police over the incident. Anderson called the incident “overblown.”

name change the foun-dation had convened a meeting of current and former board members because the latter had ex-pressed concerns about changes they had seen since Teri Hansen be-came CEO and felt they were being ostracized. The point of the meeting, according to Miles, was to smooth their ruffled feathers. But the name change, almost certainly in the works at that time, wasn’t brought up, he said.
At the time the board members, who were acting on the recommen-dation of a consultant, didn’t think it was a big deal, Greg Shanika said.
There was a separate hospital foundation, the consultant noted, and people confused the two. In addition, the word “Venice” gave the impres-sion that the foundation served only a limited area, which made it difficult to attract donors who might have other philanthropic motives. A name change was essential for the foundation to grow, board members were told. And they agreed.
“I don’t recall that there was anyone who voted against it,” Shanika said.
Perhaps no one on the board did but in informal polls in the Gondolier
Sun the new name got no support. Readers were divided as to which of four suggested names they liked better than Gulf Coast Community Foundation, but they made one thing clear: They wanted Venice in it.
A group of the former board members who had met so recently with the current board organized to lead a drive to change the name again, ide-ally back to The Venice Foundation, but at least to a name that included “Venice.” They found out they still weren’t being listened to.
Former board member Dick Beebe wrote a letter to the board members protesting the change. Addressed to them at the foundation, it was never delivered to them, he later learned.
At the outset it might not have made a differ-ence. Surprised by both the volume and the vehe-mence of the public reac-tion, board members got defensive, Shanika said.
“I guess I missed the boat on that one,” he said.
Eventually the sus-tained uproar did get their attention. On May 14, 2003, Britton filed another amendment to the foun-dation’s articles, this one changing its name to Gulf Coast Community Foun-dation of Venice Inc.
That lasted for about eight years too.
