Renunciation/Equanimity (Upeksa) Mind

The mind of Bodhisattvas does not attach to any specific being and matter.

Bodhisattvas understand the principle of impermanence, principle of non-self and the reality of existence.

Bodhisattvas realize that every matter does not possess its own nature, and is thus transient and not real, subject to ever-changing conditions. Bodhisattva himself/herself is no exception.

Renunciation (Upeksa) Mind

Renunciation can eliminate our resentment, bitterness and ill-will towards others. Bodhisattvas break up all kinds of greed, hatred and illusion and are never controlled by emotions.

Bodhisattvas renunciate all the causes of afflictions/vexations. It is the way of Bodhisattvas to transfer merit, i.e. to give the merits to others with the hope to help them.

Bodhisattvas give the merits away without the thought of getting merits in return. Bodhisattvas, of course, do not attach to the virtues and merits, and to the transference itself.

Renunciation (Upeksa) Mind

Make vows to liberate all sentient beings; wish them to gain wisdom so that they can eliminate greed, anger and ignorance; wish them to be the guardianship of their own karma with mindfulness on what they think, say and do; and to achieve the beautiful state of equanimity.

During meditation, develop mental images of your loved one and try to help him/her to achieve the state of equanimity by telling them all the causes of afflictions, the principle of impermanence, principle of non-self and the reality of existence; expend this practice to your spouse, your parent, brothers and sisters and then to all sentient beings.

Chapter 10 The Adornment of Pure Lands

The Buddha said to Subhuti, “what do you think? Was there any Dharma which the Tathàgata obtained while with Burning Lamp Buddha?” “No, World Honored One, there was actually no Dharma which the Tathàgata obtained while with Burning Lamp Buddha.” “Subhuti, what do you think, does a Bodhisattva adorn Buddhalands?” “No, World Honored One. And why? The adornment of Buddhalands is no adornment, therefore it is called adornment.”

Chapter 10 The Adornment of Pure Lands

“Therefore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva, Mahàsattva, should thus produce a pure heart. He should produce that heart without dwelling in forms. He should produce that heart without dwelling in sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, or dharmas. He should produce that heart without dwelling anywhere.”

Chapter 10 The Adornment of Pure Lands

“Subhuti, suppose a person had a body like Sumeru,

King of Mountains. What do you think, would that body be big?” Subhuti said, “Very big, World Honored One. And why? It is said by the Buddha to be no body. Therefore it is called a big body.”
