Chuck Mullen enters his third season as the head coach of the Saint Francis Red

Flash, and will look to bring his team back to the heights it reached in his first season,

when the Red Flash stunned the Robert Morris Colonials in the 2008 Northeast Con-

ference semifinals and made it to the championship match.

Working with seven true freshmen and just six returning players in 2009, the Red

Flash struggled to a 7-25 finish. However, the development of the young players

showed that bigger and better things are on the horizon for the Flash. Under Mullen,

the freshman duo of Lauren Wingard and Lizzy Williams immediately seized the two

middle positions and developed into dominant forces by season’s end. Wingard

notched 253 kills in 2009, the most for a freshman since Shirley Miller’s 327 in 2007

and the third-highest freshman total in the rally-scoring era. The total was also the most

kills for a Red Flash middle since 2002. Williams became a dual threat in the middle,

notching 233 kills and also leading the Red Flash with 87 total blocks. The Red Flash

excelled in the classroom, posting the best Team GPA’s on campus in both the Fall and

Spring semesters, and were recipients of the 2009-10 AVCA Team Academic Award.

History also occurred under Mullen’s watch in 2009, as Shirley Miller and Rikki

Myers each carved out their own spots in SFU lore. Myers became the program’s all-

time leader in assists on Oct. 25, 2009, logging her 2,817th career assist in a home

match against Long Island University. Miller became just the fourth player in the rally

scoring era to reach 1,000 career kills, doing so against Quinnipiac in the season finale

on Nov. 15, 2009. She recorded her 976th career dig in that match as well, fourth for

a career in the rally scoring era and making her one of just four players to have reached

1,000 kills and 975 digs in the rally scoring era.

After spending four seasons at Division II Coker College in South Carolina, Mullen

took over the Saint Francis Program in July of 2008. He earned his first victory at

Saint Francis in the team’s season opener against Marist, guiding his team to a 3-1 win

over the Red Foxes. He went on to compile a 13-20 record overall, going 5-3 in the

NEC to help the Red Flash earn a berth in the 2008 NEC Tournament.

SFU handily defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in the NEC quarterfinals by a score of 3-0

before Mullen then piloted his squad to a stunning upset of top-seeded Robert Morris,

who was undefeated in conference play at the time. The Red Flash stole a 3-2 victory

from the Colonials to qualify for the championship game, where they fell to perennial

power Long Island by a score of 3-0.

Rikki Myers, Keshia Gibbs and Kristin Buter earned All-Tournament honors, with

Gibbs and Buter garnering Second Team All-Conference honors as well.

Mullen is very knowledgeable about the recruiting territory surrounding Loretto

after growing up in western Pennsylvania, and attending and later coaching at Indiana

University of Pennsylvania. His seven-year collegiate head coaching resume is littered

with conference accolades for himself and his players, as well as numerous honors in

academics.

Mullen’s teams at Coker had a combined 66-61 record over four seasons, includ-

ing a 54-31 record in league play. He was twice named the Conference Carolinas

Coach-of-the-Year (2004 and 2007), and tutored five of his players to All-Conference

Carolinas recognition. Former player Margaret Madison was named to the Daktronics

Division II Volleyball Atlantic Region First Team as a middle hitter this past season.

Mullen’s teams at Coker never finished lower than fifth in the 11-team Conference

Carolinas, and consistently performed well in the classroom. The Cobras women’s vol-

leyball team won the Team GPA award at Coker in 2005, and consistently ranked in the

Top-3 among 12 varsity sports. While at Coker, Mullen also taught several classes, in-

cluding Personal and Community Health, Lifetime Fitness, and Volleyball/Soccer.

Prior to his arrival in Hartsville, Mullen served as an assistant at Indiana University

of Pennsylvania, where he assisted with practice planning, match strategies, off-season

workouts, and team and individual camps from 1998-2003. IUP compiled a six-year

record of 138-64 during his tenure, which included the school’s first-ever conference

championship team in 2002. He was also part of a staff that led the program to re-

gional playoff berths in four straight seasons from 2000-03. Eight IUP players received

all-conference accolades under his tutelage.

Mullen, who has been appointed to the NCAA Volleyball Rules Committee, has

worked summer volleyball camps at IUP, Francis Marion University, Furman University

and Troy University. In addition to his coaching duties at Coker, he served as co-advisor

to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, internet broadcaster for Coker Basketball

games, and as an athletic department representative on the search committee for a

new president at the college.

Mullen is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and the South

Carolina Athletic Coaches Association. He is certified by the American Red Cross in

CPR/First Aid. He was selected as head coach of a college all-star team that traveled

to Sydney, Australia, in June of 2008.

Mullen received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Sport in

2002 from IUP, where he later earned his Master of Science in Sport Administration

(2004). Mullen is a native of Latrobe, Pa., where he graduated from Derry Area High

School. He currently resides in Indiana, Pa., and is engaged to be wed to his fiance, Erin.

S e a s o n   o u t l o o kThe 2009 Red Flash women’s volley-

ball team entered their season with high ex-pectations; coming off an appearance in theNortheast Conference championship in2008, it was believed that a youthful RedFlash squad (seven freshmen, as opposedto just six total upperclassmen) could againcompete with the best in the conference. However, the growing pains ended up beingtoo much for the Red Flash to bear, andcombined with a difficult schedule where 16of the Red Flash’s first 17 matches wereon the road, the team limped to a 7-25 fin-ish overall and 4-12 (7th of 9) in the NEC.

Now those freshmen are a year olderand wiser, and Red Flash head coach ChuckMullen says his focus is instilling a winningattitude on the women.

“Our top priority is putting ourselves ina position to be more competitive and winthrough aggressiveness,” said Mullen.“What we really need to do is show inten-sity from start to finish, and doing the thingswe need to win as opposed to resigning our-selves to losing when things get tough.”

Playing to Mullen’s advantage is the re-turning cast. While the losses of seniorsRikki Myers and Shirley Miller - two playerswhose names are littered in the SFU recordbooks – will be damaging, it is much rosierthan the loss of six players (three starters)that occurred before the 2009 season.

“I’m hoping that the year of experiencewill make it easier on these girls to pushtheir talents further,” said Mullen.

oUTSIDe hITTeROutside hitter is one of

only two starting positions tofill, but it may not be easy; out-side hitter has often been thefocal point of Mullen’s offense, and only two other players onthe team took half as manyswings as O1 Shirley Miller didin 2009. Senior RachelCapizzi has the edge in experi-ence, but she will have to fendoff sophomore Danielle Reese, who finished with 135 kills toCapizzi’s 104 in 2009.

“Both girls have startingexperience from last season,so I expect it to be a tight bat-tle,” said Mullen. “Capizzimight have an edge as a sen-ior with knowledge and experi-ence, but whoever performsbest will get the spot.”

Mullen said not to sleepon incoming freshmanLeeanne Haus, though, as shebrings “much-needed fire-power” to the team, and could easily pushfor playing time.

“Haus might have the strongest armon the outside,” said Mullen.

oPPoSITeOn the right side of the court, Mullen is

happy to see a familiar face make a return;senior Lindsay Malloy, who missed the2009 season due to a preseason injury, isback and ready to return to her 2008 formwhen she banged home 122 kills.

“Having Malloy back will be a boost forour team,” said Mullen. “She provides goodsenior leadership, and her ability to defendas well as attack is a big part of what we liketo do on the right side.”

Also competing for time at the oppo-site is sophomore Lauren Xiques, whoshowed strong versatility starting at bothoutside hitter and opposite in 2009 beforean injury derailed her promising freshmancampaign after 17 matches.

mIDDleWhile most of the other positions on

the team seem to be up for grabs, the re-turning duo of Lauren Wingard and LizzyWilliams seem to have both middle posi-tions locked up for 2009, and perhaps theforeseeable future. Wingard notched 253kills in 2009, the most for a freshman sinceShirley Miller’s 327 in 2007 and the third-highest freshman total in the rally-scoringera. The total was also the most kills for aRed Flash middle since 2002. Williams be-came a dual threat in the middle, notching233 kills and also leading the Red Flash with87 total blocks.

“Wingard and Williamshave skill sets that comple-ment each other nicely,”said Mullen. “Wingardshowed herself to be a bet-ter offensive force last year, and Williams seemed toprogress more quickly ondefense. They work well to-gether, and should con-tinue to improve theirall-around games.”

Mullen is also excitedabout the prospect of in-coming freshman ColleenBlack, a 6-2 middle thatcould push for playing timebehind the two sopho-mores.

“Black needs some re-finement of her game, but Ithink before long she couldearn some time on thecourt,” said Mullen.

SeTTeRSetter is the other positionthat Mullen will need to re-

place, as SFU’s all-time assist leader RikkiMyers graduated in 2009. Mullen said therace for the position is wide open, as soph-omore Kierstin Kiser and freshman LoganMeinert will compete in the preseason forthe right to run the offense.

“It will all come down to which one canrun the offense more effectively,” saidMullen. “They both have some skills that theother doesn’t have, so it might come downto which one can round out their game bet-ter.”

Kiser showed flashes of potential in herfreshman season, including a 50-assistmatch against Fairleigh Dickinson on Oct.17, 2009. However, Meinert comes froma highly successful North Allegheny H.S.program, and could push the veteran forplaying time.

lIbeRoMullen characterized the competition

for the starting spot at libero to be the most“interesting” of the positional battles, as thethree women there – Chrissy Breisch,Amanda Zahumensky, and incoming fresh-man Brittany Stambaugh - all bring differentskills to the table.

“This is another one that is wide open,”said Mullen. “Breisch was the starter all oflast year, and she brings leadership and ex-perience to the position. Zahumenskymight be one of the most dynamic playerson the team, but she needs to find a level ofconsistency in her game. And Stambaughhas shown an excellent ability to pass on theserve-receive.”

T h e   n o r t h e a s t   C o n f e r e n c e

When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first

established as the ECAC-Metro Conference

back in 1981, the league’s founders had one

goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I

men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on

the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its

inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations

over the past three decades, having transformed itself

into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To

mark the NEC’s 30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the

Conference will proudly celebrate its heritage as its builds

toward a promising future.

The NEC and its member institutions are committed to

providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve

their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in

the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually

strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic

success, academic achievement and integrity,

sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community

partnership and national engagement.

The remarkable success story of the conference began

to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring

additional sports. Three years later, a change of name

was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know

it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship

continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now

enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA

Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball,

field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s

lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and

women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since

its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long

Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA)

and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school

alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in

1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut

State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart

(1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of

Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member,

which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint

with access to such major media markets as New York

City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.

NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship

sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s

bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey,

football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s

indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s

and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s

soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s

tennis, and women’s volleyball.

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy...Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those whohave generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club.

The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round.

With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improvedevery day working conditions within the athletic department.

We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward andtake our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athleticsis very bright because you care about our student-athletes.
