In.his.first.year.with.the.Warriors,.Mello.led.the.team.to.a.5-12.record,.and.then.an.outstanding.9-8-2.record.in.his.second.season...The.Warriors.made.a.big.jump.from.last.in.the.2007.SCAC.standings.to.5th.place.in.the.2009.SCAC.standings...Mello.has.coached.two.players.to.All-SCAC.honors.and.his.teams.have.earned.NSCAA/Adidas.All-Academic.Team.honors.in.both.of.his.years.at.the.helm.

Mello.joined.the.Warriors.after.serving.as.the.head.men’s.and.women’s.soccer.coach.for.18.years.at.Luther.College.in.Decorah,.Iowa..He.also.served.as.the.Events.Coordina-tor.and.Physical.Education.Instructor.at.Luther..

During.his.time.with.the.Norse,.his.men’s.team.won.six.Iowa.Intercollegiate.Athletic.Conference.(IIAC).titles,.made.five.NCAA.Division.III.National.Tournament.appearances.(Elite.Eight.-.1995,.2001).and.tallied.a.240-119-13.overall.record..

History of the SCACThe.Southern.Collegiate.Athletic.Conference.(SCAC).celebrates.its.25th.Anniversary.in.2010-11.with.countless.memories.of.a.proud.and.storied.past.and.visions.of.an.exciting.future...

The.SCAC.was.founded.and.began.operation.on.September.1,.1962,.as.the.College.Athletic.Conference.(CAC)..The.league’s.first.primary.mark.is.pictured.on.the.left.

Centre.College.of.Danville,.Kentucky;.Southwestern.at.Memphis.(Tennessee).(now.known.as.Rhodes.College);.The.University.of.the.South.of.Sewanee,.Tennessee;.and.Washington.and.Lee.University.of.Lexington,.Virginia,.were.the.four.charter.members.of.the.conference..Later.in.1962,.Washington.University.of.St..Louis,.Missouri,.became.the.fifth.member.and.the.CAC.remained.unchanged.until.1972..

Following.membership.changes.throughout.the.1970s.and.1980s,.the.conference.went.through.restructuring.and.renaming..With.the.addition.of.Millsaps.College.of.Jackson,.Mississippi,.and.Trinity.University.of.San.Antonio,.Texas,.in.1988.and.Hendrix.College.of.Conway,.Arkanasas,.and.Oglethorpe.University.of.Atlanta,.Georgia,.in.1991,.membership.reached.a.then.all-time.high.of.eight.

That.same.year.(1991),.the.confer-ence.renamed.itself.the.Southern.Collegiate.Athletic.Conference,.hired.its.first.full-time.commissioner.-.Stephen.P..Argo.-.and.a.permanent.conference.office.was.established.in.

Atlanta,.Georgia..As.part.of.restructuring,.the.league.also.adopted.its.current.primary.mark.(pictured.right).and.adopted.blue.(pms.287).and.gold.(pms.131).as.the.official.colors.of.the.conference.

Membership.changes.continued.throughout.the.‘90s..The.SCAC.added.Southwestern.University.of.Georgetown,.Texas,.in.1993.with.participation.beginning.in.the.1994-95.academic.year..In.1997-98,.the.SCAC.added.both.DePauw.University.of.Greencastle,.Indiana,.and.Rose-Hulman.Institute.of.Technology.of.Terre.Haute,.Ind.,.with.participa-tion.beginning.in.1998-99.

As.part.of.a.year-long.celebration.in.2005-06,.the.league.celebrated.its.15th.an-niversary.as.the.restructured.SCAC..The.league.adopted.a.special.anniversary.logo.(pictured.left).and.as.part.of.the.celebration,.15th.anniversary.teams.were.selected.for.all.conference.sponsored.sports.

After.Rose-Hulman.announced.its.intentions.to.leave.the.conference,.Austin.College.and.Colorado.College.were.confirmed.as.the.10th.and.11th.members.of.the.league.in.2006.with.participation.beginning.in.the.2006-07.academic.year.

Birmingham-Southern.College.of.Birmingham,.Alabama,.a.former.member.of.the.Division.I.Big.South.Conference,.was.approved.as.the.12th.member.of.the.SCAC.and.began.play.in.2007-08.

On.the.national.athletics.stage,.the.SCAC.has.had.its.fair.share.of.success.-.both.in.terms.of.team.championships.(six).and.individual.championships.(19).

SCAC Academic ProfileThe.SCAC.and.its.member.institutions.are.committed.to.maintaining.high.academic.standards..The.member.institutions.are.committed.to.the.principle.that.a.quality.college.athletics.program.is.beneficial.to.the.well-being.of.an.institution.in.that.it.benefits.the.entire.campus.community.as.well.as.the.student-athletes.

With.11.of.the.12.member.institutions.maintaining.Phi.Beta.Kappa.chapters.(Hendrix.included).on.their.campuses,.the.SCAC.boasts.some.of.the.most.prestigious.colleges.and.universities.in.the.nation..SCAC.schools.are.consistently.ranked.among.the.top.50.colleges.and.universities.in.the.nation.in.such.respected.publications.as.Barron’s,.Peterson’s,.Princeton.Review.and.National.Review.College.Guide.

Hendrix Athletic Facilities Ranked 13th in Nation by Princeton ReviewHendrix.College.has.always.been.considered.one.of.the.country’s.best.institutions.for.undergraduate.education,.however,.according.to.the.Princeton.Review.the.Warriors’.three-year-old.athletic.facilities.ranks.among.the.best.in.the.nation.

The.Princeton.Review.recently.praised.Hendrix.College.for.its.new.Wellness.and.Athletic.Center,.Bob.Courtway.Pool.and.four.outdoor.playing.fields.by.ranking.it.13th.in.the.country.among.all.2,500.four-year.colleges..That.includes.all.NCAA.Division.I,.II.and.III.schools.

Hendrix.joined.Wabash.College.(Crawfordsville,.Ind.).and.Middlebury.College.(Middle-bury,.Vt.).as.the.only.other.NCAA.Division.III.schools.to.make.the.Top.20.list..Hendrix.was.also.the.only.Southern.Collegiate.Athletic.Conference.(SCAC).school.on.the.list.

The.school.became.Central.Collegiate.Institute.in.1881.with.the.addition.of.secondary.and.collegiate.depart-ments..

The.institute.was.purchased.in.1884.by.conferences.of.the.Southern.Methodist.Church.in.Arkansas.and.was.renamed.Hendrix.College.in.honor.of.Bishop.Eugene.R..Hendrix.in.1889..The.following.year.the.college.moved.to.Conway,.Arkansas..

By.the.mid-1930s.Hendrix.had.firmly.established.its.role.as.a.small,.coeducational,.undergraduate,.residential,.liberal.arts,.church-related.institution..

From.the.mid-1950s.Hendrix.gradually.increased.student.enrollment.until.it.stabilized.at.just.under.1,000.in.the.1970s..Through.the.end.of.the.20th.century,.Hendrix.added.more.than.15.buildings,.developed.a.new.master.plan.for.growth.of.the.campus,.and.revised.and.enhanced.its.curriculum.and.added.faculty.in.key.areas..
