Students gather outside of the W early in the morning after a campus-wide dorm storm. Every-one is waiting for the victory bell to be rung as the official declaration of Outfly, or Ausflug as true to Wartburg’s German heritage. Outfly is a Wartburg tradition that celebrates students by giving them a day without classes. This year’s theme was ‘A Knight at the Movies’ and students were able to walk the red carpet on the way to breakfast, which was served to them by their professors. The campus mall was filled with a multitude of activities for students to participate in throughout the day such as the velcro wall, an ob-stacle course, a photo scavenger hunt, and throw-ing at the dunk tank in which President Colson was seated. Other activities included skits from the Wartburg Players, each highlighting a scene from popular movies such as Casablanca, Napo-leon Dynamite, and Harry Potter. To wrap up the day, students had the opportunity to watch ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ on Clinton Field while popcorn and hot chocolate were being served.

At other schools, homecoming is simply an annual event held for visiting alumni. At Wartburg College, it is a little bit more than that. Homecoming celebrates the uniting of students and alumni by hosting a variety of activities throughout the week. This year’s theme was Orange Power: Calling all Super-Knights. Kastle Kapers and the pep rally kicked off the festivities on Thursday, October 15. Kastle Kapers, which is a talent show of sorts, was followed immediately by the coronation of the king and queen, Abhay Nadipuram and Hannah Baker. The pep rally was to follow, which included performances by the Wartburg Players, cheerleaders, dance team, and competitions between students. The parade kicked off Saturday. Student groups were encouraged to participate, with prizes involved for the best float. The Renaissance Fair followed the parade. The Knights football team faced the Kohawks but unfor-tunately lost with a score 21-35. To end the day, Oktoberfest drew hundreds of students and alumni who gathered together to eat, drink, and celebrate Wartburg.

Freedom Without Walls was a seven day long festivity that celebrated the twentieth an-niversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. Wartburg was one of 30 educational institutions across the United States to be awarded a grant by the German Information Center to partake in the Freedom Without Walls celebration. At the beginning of the week, a handful of Wartburg students constructed a small partition that was then covered in graffiti to represent the Berlin Wall. Towards the end of the week, the wall was torn down using sledge hammers similar to its authentic duplicate, President Colson making one of the first blows. Another part of the celebration were bricks placed throughout the campus, each with a different fact about divided Germany and the wall. Other events of the week included German film showings, a forensics competition, a gala, and a charity run. At the gala, third-year, Jack Stout, gave a presentation on the construction of the Wall. Following him, Ambassador James D. Bindenagel spoke of his time serving as United States Deputy Chief of Mission in Berlin at the time of the fall of Berlin’s Wall.

Christmas with Wartburg was a weekend filled with music, re-joicing and Christmas spirit. Wartburg’s annual program was performed in Neumann Auditorium and included the Wind En-semble, Wartburg Choir, Castle Singers, Ritterchor, and St. Eliza-beth Chorale. The performance had some new features this year with live narration, movement, and more group pieces and was under the direction of Christmas with Wartburg Coordinator, Dr. Lee Nel-son. The choir students spread throughout the auditorium during the audience numbers and spread the light of Christmas by hold-ing real candles during some of the pieces. Almost formulaic in the use of exposition, crises, and climaxes, Little Foxes leaves nothing to structural chance and virtually nothing is extraneous. Hellman has con-structed a play where elements click into place like the tumblers in a safe lock. ‘Little Foxes’ is about a southern family that is trying to invest in a large northern company by building a mill on their land. The family becomes filled with greed as the idea looms closer to reality. However, the money needed to start building is unfound and the family steeps to illegal operations to obtain the money. In the end, the family is split apart and it is never known if the mill becomes a reality.

The men’s soccer team had another impressive season. They had a strong start with four consecutive wins. They fin-ished their season with an overall record of 16-4-2, and a 6-2 record in the IIAC conference. They also won the Iowa Conference Tournament against Loras 2-1 in an overtime thriller in Dubuque. With the tourney title, the Knights qualified for the NCAA Division III soccer tournament and played the University of Chicago in Wheaton, Illinois. The Knights breezed past their competition with a score of 2-1. The next round however, they were not as successful. The Knights ended their post-season with a loss to Calvin Col-lege. Three team members were named to the all-Iowa Con-ference honor squads. Luke Prater and Trent Michael each gained first team awards, while Geoff Miller was a second team selection.

The Knights Women’s Soccer Team had an impressive start to their season with 14 wins and 2 ties. However, with two consecu-tive losses going into the Iowa Conference tournament, the team had a hard time gaining their momentum back. The Knights run for an Iowa Conference Tournament title and an automatic bid to the national tournament was cut short by Simpson as the Knights fell 1-0. Sadly, even with their strong record the Knights did not get an at large bid to play in the post-season. The team ended their season with an overall record of 14-3-2, and a 5-2-1 record in the Iowa Conference. This was the women’s sixth consecutive 10-wins-or-more season. Lauren Thomas led the Knights in as-sists and points, and she was named the squad’s Most Valuable Player. Several team members were named to the all-Iowa Confer-ence honor squads. Logan Webb, Lauren Thomas, Jess Macauley, and Katy Wendt received first team honors, and Chelsea Frye earned a second team honor. Christie Ernst, Mackenzie Moore, Taylor Vermie, and Kaylee Benning were designated honorable mention.

Once again the Wartburg Men and Women’s track team had a very successful season. The Wartburg women’s track team claimed its fourth combined in-door and outdoor NCAA Division III championship. Individuals in the 4X400 and the long jump lead the way. The Knights earned a combined 13 men’s and women’s All-American honors. This year the girls 4X100 meter relay team made up of Jenny Kordick, Jen Ganshirt, Faith Burt, and Nevada Morrison had the fastest time in the nation of 46.37 seconds. The Knights finished the sea-son strong with the women taking first in the conference, and the men follow-ing with second. Wartburg College will send 13 women’s and one men’s event to the 2010 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Senior, Russell Harris of LaGrange, Ill. competed in the 110 meter high hurdles at nationals.
