Last season, the Sugar Bears entered the season with just three combined years of Division I experience among the nine players on the active roster. It’s a vast diff erence this season as Central Arkan-sas returns all of its lettermen from last year’s 21-8 team and has added six new faces to the lineup. Sidney Stewart and Brea Banks both redshirted last season – Stewart due to transfer rule, Banks to injury –and four new signees are now on board including junior guard Destinee Rogers, the team’s leading scorer in 2008-09 before being dismissed from the team with two games left in the season.

The Sugar Bears will open the season with cross-town foe Hen-drix College, an NCAA Division III member. They will then travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama –UCA’s second SEC opponent since moving to Division I. The Sugar Bears lost 104-63 to Ole Miss on Dec. 17, 2006.

The three teams to record non-conference wins against the Sugar Bears last season – Belmont, Lipscomb and Chicago State – all come to the Farris Center this year. UCA was 15-1 at home last sea-son with wins over Tulsa of Conference USA and Southland cham-pion Lamar included.

Lamar, which won the West division last season, has switched back to become a permanent member of the East division after it and Stephen F. Austin had made a two-year switch. With the change, the two highest vote-getters in the preseason Sports Information Directors poll will get to square off twice. Those meetings will pro-duce the Southland’s marquee individual matchup – pitting South-land Player of the Year & Newcomer of the Year Jenna Plumley, a senior Lamar guard and Oklahoma transfer, up against Central Arkansas sophomore forward Megan Herbert, who led the league in scoring, rebounding, fi eld goal percentage and free throw per-centage last season.

In addition to Rogers and the nine returning members of last year’s squad, the Sugar Bears will benefi t from the inside presence of 6-1 freshman Courtney Duever and 6-foot junior Porsha Donnerson – doubling last year’s center rotation. In Stewart, the Sugar Bears add an experienced perimeter player whose outside shooting will complement sophomore forward Westin Taylor who fi nished sec-ond to Plumley in 3-pointers made last season in the Southland.

Though 15 are on the roster, the season begins with the status of two guards in question. Junior Nakeia Guiden, an All-SLC honorable mention pick, was declared out for a minimum of six weeks just be-fore the season began, and junior transfer Jelessa Williams started the year out indefi nitely after missing most of the preseason with a leg injury.

MATT DANIELMATT DANIELHEAD COACH3RD SEASON2010 SoUTHLAND CONFERENCE 2010 SoUTHLAND CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEARCOACH OF THE YEAR

When Matt Daniel was hired at Central Arkansas, he was faced with the task of turning around a program struggling through its transition to NCAA Division I after a long history of success in Division II and NAIA.

Mission accomplished.

In just his second season on the job, Daniel – the 2010 Southland Conference Coach of the Year and WBCA National Coach of the Year nominee – led Central Arkansas to a nation-leading and Southland record-breaking 15-win improvement to get the Sugar Bears to 21-8 and mere seconds away from a division title.

Following a 6-23 campaign in his fi rst season, Daniel overhauled the roster and hit the recruiting trail hard – landing a nine-member class that included seven homegrown talents. Among them were Megan Her-bert - Arkansas’ Miss Basketball 2009 and the 2010 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year; Westin Taylor – rated the state’s No. 2 prospect by one service; and Sidney Stewart – a transfer from traditional power Louisiana Tech. Daniel also was able to pluck Britney Gowans – a guard ranked in the top 35 nationally by ESPN – out of Dallas.

After four season-ending injuries in the preseason, Daniel found himself with a roster of only nine players with a combined three years of Division I experience – the nation’s most inexperienced team.

With six freshmen, two sophomores and a junior, Dan-iel and the Sugar Bears re-wrote record books as they had the 8th-biggest improvement ever in Division I and broke the league’s 24 year-old record. At 15-1, they led the Southland in home wins and broke the school record for most in a season. Of the 21 wins, 11 came against teams Central Arkansas had played and failed to beat the year before.

The team also broke scoring records both off ensively

Page 7: 2010-11 Sugar Bears Basketball Factbook

and defensively, putting up new conference marks for most points in a game (119) and fewest points allowed in a game (22). They held fi ve opponents to fewer than 50 points and scored 85 or more in seven games – including three 100-point games.

The success extended be-yond the fl oor and into the stands and the classroom for the Sugar Bears. The team had a combined GPA of over 3.0 and UCA saw a 46.7 percent spike in home atten-dance in 2010.

The 34 year-old Arkansas na-tive came to Central Arkansas from the University of Mis-souri, where he quickly de-veloped a reputation as one of the nation’s most tireless and spirited young coaches. During his three seasons at Mizzou, where he served as recruiting coordinator, he assembled the nation’s 25th, 26th and 31st-ranked classes.

Prior to joining the staff at Missouri, Daniel spent the 2004-05 season at the Uni-versity of Colorado under legendary coach Ceal Barry, returning to the campus where he began his colle-giate playing career in the mid-’90S.

In 2003-04, Daniel led Little Rock’s Pulaski Academy boys to a 34-1 record, a berth in the state semifi nals and a national ranking as high as No. 14 while earning 6-AAA High School Coach of the Year honors.

Daniel also has some his-tory with the Southland

Conference, having been an assistant men’s coach at UT Arlington from 1999-2003.

Since beginning his coach-ing career just more than a decade ago as a graduate as-sistant at Arizona State, Dan-iel has coached a number of players who have gone on to play professionally in the NBA, WNBA and overseas, and has developed a keen eye for talent while estab-lishing himself as one of the premiere young recruiters in the nation.

He coached his younger brother, Josh, at UT Arling-ton. His father, David, is well respected in Arkansas coach-ing circles, having coached both high school and colle-giately in the state for more than 30 years before moving into athletics administration.

Daniel was an all-state per-former at Jonesboro High, being named Mr. Basketball in the state in 1994 when he was the state tournament MVP while leading his team to a state title in Arkansas’ highest classifi cation.

He began his collegiate ca-reer at Colorado in 1994-95, guiding the Buff aloes to the NIT and becoming the fi rst freshman to earn a post-season start in the school’s history. The next season, he was an Academic All-Big Eight selection. After two years with the Buff s, Daniel transferred to Harding Uni-versity in Searcy, Ark., where he graduated in 1998.
