DIABETES IS A DISEASE THAT DEMANDS ATTENTION

• Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications, including blindness, amputation, kidney failure, double the risk of heart disease or stroke, and shortened life expectancy.

• As many as 3 million Americans have type 1 diabetes; over 21 million have type 2 diabetes • 40+ children a day are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and the number is steadily increasing • Diabetes is the single‐most costly chronic disease at a staggering $175 billion a year in related medical costs. • Children with diabetes inject themselves up to six times a day just to stay alive and test their blood sugar from four to twelve times daily.  Insulin is not a cure; it is only life‐support.
