Buffie Burson’s Career Record

Buffie BursonHead Coach

Buffie Burson is in her 16th season as head coach of the North Georgia College & State Univeristy women’s basketball team in 2009-10. Throughout Burson’s ca-reer at North Georgia, her teams have won eight conference championships, and made eight national tournament appearances, including 3 Elite Eight and 2 Sweet Sixteen finishes. In the 2006-07 season, her second year in NCAA Division II, Bur-son recorded her 300th career coaching victory with an 82-55 victory over Claflin University on December 30. During the 2005-06 season, in her team’s first year of competition in the Peach Belt Conference/NCAA II, they finished with a 19-1 record in conference play to win the PBC regular season championship. In her 15-year tenure, Burson‘s Lady Saints have amassed an impressive overall record of 333 wins and 144 losses (.698), averaging over 22 wins per season. Burson’s teams are known for tough defense of their home court. Under her tutelage, the Lady Saints boast an impressive home record of 165 wins while losing only 29 times on their home floor over this 15-year period, including a 96-19 record posted over the last eight years. (Four losses are to the 3 time NAIA National Champions Union University) In January 2003, Coach Burson reached a milestone with her team’s 200th win. The 2006 Peach Belt Championship team helped Burson earn Peach Belt Coach of the year honors as well as the Atlanta Tip-off Club/Naismith Awards Georgia Coach of the Year. Burson is also a four time Atlanta Tip-off Club/Naismith Awards NAIA Coach of the Year, and three-time GACC Coach of the Year. Over the years, Burson’s forte seems to lie in judging raw talent. Among her recruits are three Players of the Year, eight Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference players and All-Academic players, nine All-Americans, and 6 Academ-ic All-Americans. Most importantly Burson’s players perpetually boast high team over-all GPA’s. Five of her teams have been named to the WBCA Academic Honor Roll, including the 05-06 PBC Championship Lady Saints who were honored by

the WBCA for the 14th best GPA in NCAA II with a 3.435 team average. Throughout the seasons, Burson’s teams have been characterized by their mental toughness. Buying into the belief that “Most battles are won before they are fought,” Burson developed DAWG Week, North Georgia’s answer to the Army’s Special Forces Training. Working closely with LTC Billy Shaw to implement “beast events” which simulate game-like stress situations, Burson puts her “ladies” through five days of grueling war-like basketball. She is often asked the secret in such training whereby she simply states it begins with the name itself. The initials in DAWG Week stand for Dedicated Athletes With Guts! “Their effort is a true testa-ment to their character”, she says with pride. Burson was born in St. Louis, MO where her father enjoyed a career in profes-sional football. After receiving AS, BS & MA degrees from Truett-McConnell College and the University of Montevallo, Burson followed his footsteps into the coaching field. She be-gan serving as a conference rater in 1998 and worked as an NAIA Rater at the national level, as well as being a member of the NAIA All-America Selection Committee, the WBCA Ko-dak All-America Selection Committee and the WBCA Schol-arship Selection Committee. In 2007-08 Burson served as a member of the NCAA Regional Rankings Committee and was the Peach Belt Conference Captain for the WBCA. In addition to Burson’s coaching duties, she is an assistant professor in the HPE Department. Over the summer months, she is the Di-rector of several girls’ basketball camps along with the Team Camp of Champions, featuring some of the best high school varsity teams in the state. During the Fall, Burson’s Lady Saints host THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF HOOPS, a free bas-ketball clinic for elementary girls and boys, as a way of “giv-ing back” to the community for their support of the team. Al-though winning is exhilarating, Buffie Burson’s favorite part of coaching is the Xs & Os. However, it is the imparting of “life lessons” that remain her passion. When asked what she hopes her graduates take with them from her program, she is reminded of basketball coaching legend, John Wooden’s ad-vice -- “Be more concerned with your character than your rep-utation; for your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” “If, through my example, that is the only thing they learn from me in four years,” states Burson, “I will feel that I have truly succeeded!”

Lindsey Huffman

Assistant Coach

1stSeason

Lindsey Huffman is in her first season as an assistant coach for the North Georgia College & State University women’s basketball team in 2009-10. “We are thrilled to have Lindsey rejoin our North Georgia Lady Saint’s staff and family,” head women’s basket-ball Buffie Burson said. “Her ability to recruit and develop players will make an immediate impact on our program. She is a great addition to our staff.” Huffman’s duties include recruiting, handling day-to-day operations of the program, and assisting Burson in on-floor coaching responsibilities. “Having played and coached at North Georgia, Lindsey understands the challenges and ex-pectations of the program,” Burson said. During her one year playing for the Lady Saints, Huffman ran the point guard position, averaging 7.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as North Georgia posted a record of 19-1 in the Peach Belt Conference to claim the regular season championship. Huffman graduated from North Georgia with a degree in Physical Education and spent two years as a graduate assistant under Burson before spending the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at Roswell High School.

North Georgia College & State University is a coeducational state uni-versity emphasizing strong liberal arts, as well as pre-professional, professional, and graduate programs. Serving as a liberal arts university for all of its students and as a military college for its Corps of Cadets, the university is distinct in many ways. As the only four-year public institution in northeast Georgia, NGCSU offers a quality college experience in a beautiful mountain setting, about an hour north of Atlanta. Specializing in leadership training and producing leaders since 1873, the uni-versity has been designated by the state as The Leadership Institution of Georgia . For more than 130 years , North Georgia College & State University has been helping students discover remarkable things about themselves and the world. Our graduates gain a solid foundation on which to build their lives --not only a quality edu-cation, but cherished memories of great ex-periences, lifelong friends and good times. The administration, faculty, and staff at North Georgia are dedicated to the education and traditional values which enable students to excel in whatever field they pursue. Classes are small and atten-tion is personalized. Faculty, not graduate teaching assistants, do all of the teaching at North Georgia. Located in Dahlonega, Geor-gia, a small historic town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the university of-fers more than 50 majors to prepare stu-dents for nearly any career. With more than 4,000 students, North Georgia College & State University is large enough to provide

a wide array of opportunities and activities, but small enough to allow personal atten-tion from professors and to foster friend-ships among students. Nestled in the mountains, the gold-rush town of Dahlonega has kept its historic charm and spirit. In this town of fewer than 4,000, students easily walk to nearby restaurants, shops, banks and churches. The campus is safe, clean, and friendly, with the excitement and entertain-ment of metro Atlanta only a 90-minute drive away. Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, North Georgia College & State University is an outdoor enthusi-ast’s dream, with endless places for hiking, mountain climbing, hunting, fishing, bird-watching, whitewater rafting, canoeing and camping. This area of North Georgia draws many visitors who enjoy its lush forests, stunning waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

Randy Dunn is in his 14th year as Athletic Director and his 27th year at North Georgia College & State University in 2009-10.

Dunn served as the head men’s basketball coach for 14 years before retiring in 2003 to serve full-time as Athletic Director. Dunn is an alumnus of North Georgia College, having played basketball for the Saints for three years, graduating in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education.

After completing his undergraduate degree at NGC, Dunn was an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern State University, where he received his M.Ed. in Physical Education. He became the assistant coach at the State University of West Georgia in 1981 before re-turning to North Georgia College in 1982. In 1996, Dunn’s men’s basketball team won the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference regular season championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. That same year, Dunn was named GACC men’s bas-ketball “Coach of the Year”.

During his ten year tenure as Athletic Director, Dunn oversaw the addition of three new sports: women’s soccer, baseball and softball. The intercollegiate athletic program has produced 12 conference championships in the Georgia Athletic Conference, the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference, and the Southern States Athletic Conference. In the past five years, the athletic department’s facilities have grown with the addition of the NGCSU Baseball, Softball, and Soccer Complex. Most recently, Dunn has overseen the athletic department’s transition from the NAIA to the NCAA and the Peach Belt Conference.

Dunn is married to the former Susan Reed, and they have a 18-year-old son, Jake.

Lindsay Reeves is in her 10th year with North Georgia Col-lege & State University and her third year as Associate Director of Athletics and third year as Senior Women’s Administrator in 2009-10.

In addition to her duties with the Athletic Department, she will continue teaching in the Health & Physical Education Department and serve as Di-rector of the Human Perfor-mance Lab.

Lindsay graduated from Ithaca College with a BS in Physical Education and received her Masters from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Exercise Physiology.

After completing her education she worked as the Director of Testing at Sports Training Institute in N.Y., then Assistant Director of Health & Fitness at General Electric World Headquarters in CT., and from 1990-1999 as the Director of Employee Wellness and faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Lindsay is married to Dave Reeves and they have a son Tim who is 21, and a daughter Kelley who is 19.

PBC Commissioner David Brunk with Athletic Director Randy Dunn in Memorial Hall for a conference matchup between the Saints and Columbus State University.

VISION STATEMENTThe Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II.

We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demo-graphic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations re-flect a communality of purpose and a commit-ment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

HISTORYNow entering its 20th year of existence in 2009-10, the Peach Belt Conference has be-come one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 28 national championships and 25 national fi-nalist

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the confer-ence has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to No-vember of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II confer-ence. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others,

formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Co-lumbus State golf team took the honor by win-ning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while AASU women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the confer-ence’s most memorable. The Armstrong At-lantic State men’s and women’s tennis teams both won their respective national champion-ships – for the second year in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addi-tion, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the first to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight, the Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volleyball team ever to advance to the Elite Eight and the North Geor-gia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series.

The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State Univer-sity, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Confer-ence was adopted in January of 1990 and mod-ified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991

and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Ken-nesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clay-ton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Up-state did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006.

For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with the addition of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giving the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addition of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Florida and expands the league into Alabama for the first time.

David Brunk was named the second PBC com-missioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC com-missioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the con-ference as its second era begins.

Dr. David Potter, president of North Georgia College & State University, returns as the pres-ident of the Peach Belt in 2009-10.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and wom-en’s golf.
