Winter Market DayStudents will learn to be both a producer and a consumer through an interactive Economics Unit.
Flat StanleySpringStudents will enhance letter writing, geography and presentation skills through finding a family friend to accept a Flat Stanley to show around their hometown and return a letter from Flat Stanley teaching the class about where he vacationed.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT IS KEY TO SUCCESS!!!
DRA & TPRI are administered 3 times a year to identify your child’s reading comprehension, reading fluency & spelling abilities.
District Benchmark Tests at the end of the year to see your child’s progress and identify growth areas.
This data is used as a tool for the teacher’s to guide instruction.
By the end of second grade a student in Baranoff is expected to be reading 90 words per minute. This is commonly referred to as Fluency.
Have your child read aloud as often as possible to enhance speed and accuracy.
Fluency Homework given weekly. Student is to read the passage and parent will mark off the one minute mark each day. The goal is to get past that mark each day.
We are moving beyond learning to read AND more into reading to learn.
Students need to read various genres:
Narrative historical fiction Fantasy test taking nonfiction instructions poems recipes magazines biography Comics mystery
Pretest given to ALL on Monday Pretest determines Basic or Challenge List 18 or more correct = Challenge List Graded on 100% scale Basic = 20 words Challenge = 10 words Choice of Homework Activities

It is a written test done in the spelling homework spiral. Remember that all homework is checked the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise noted. Fluency will always be due on Friday.

If you have not turned in your activity fees yet please try and get them to me as soon as possible.
Late work will be completed during Flex Time. Consistent failure to complete or hand in
assignments in a timely manner will result in a Parent/Teacher Conference.
Late Work will be sent home as needed for completion.
3 or more late homework assignments prevents opportunity for Citizenship Award. The grade for Homework will be lowered on the report card depending on the amount of Late Homework. The grade for Completes Work in a Timely Manner will be lowered on the report card for consistently late classwork.

A note with a basic explanation is needed for ANY absence.
3 or more absences in a Nine Weeks results in ineligibility for Perfect Attendance Award.
Students are given 3 days to complete work for a one day absence and extended absences will be dealt with individually.
The Absent Folder will house allneeded makeup work. Contactme if you would like to pick itup the same day. Please return this folder.

A note must be written to the teacher if your child is going home a different way than usual.
Please make contact with teacher via email or fax if there is a change during the day.
If you do not get a confirmation, please call the office!
Try to make dismissal changes prior to 2 pm. If a note or email is not written, your child
will be sent home the way you have specified to me on the first days of school.
WOW & FLEX replace the term RECESS WOW is State Mandated. WOW is structured physical activity. WOW is required on days student does not
have PE. FLEX is free time on play ground. FLEX is extra time in the schedule and is
not required. FLEX becomes STUDY HALL when class
work or homework are not completed.
Sent home on Thursdays. Please review with your child. Discuss with your child to gain an
understanding of what is understood/learned and what needs more practice.
If there is a note to return to teacher, please do so after you and your child have reviewed together, otherwise, it is not necessary to return.

Review your student’s strengths and identify goals
Reading Abilities Math Skills, Social Behavior Set goals together About 20 minutes long
Times and Dates will be sent home soon for you to sign up. I will also be available for a few after school times, as well.
Students are responsible for themselves.
Students must remember to take lunch kit to lunch or turn lunch money in in the morning.
Students are to pack their HW Folder each day and return with the folder the next morning.
Students do not call home for forgotten things.
Students do not go back to the classroom for food or money. The cafeteria provides a basic lunch in this case. (only if this becomes to be a frequent issue)
Students are to bring the appropriate homework and folder to school each day.
A Verbal Warning will be given in folder the first time…and discipline procedures will proceed from this point if it becomes routine.
Student is responsible for emptying backpack and folder contents each morning and turning in materials to appropriate locations.
A reminder will be given to the class but the teacher cannot be expected to go through each child’s backpack or folder each day.
Every Other Thursday 9:30Students are encouraged to check
out a variety of reading material, rather always joke books or Eye Spy, etc…
Student A reads 20 minutes every night; Student B reads only 4 minutes a night … or not at all!
Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week. Student A 20 minutes x 5 = 100 minutes Student B 4 minutes x 5 = 20 minutes
Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.
Multiply minutes a month x 9 months.
Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 728 minutes in a school year.
Student A reads the equivalent of ten whole school days a year.
Student B reads the equivalent of only two whole school days a year.
Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days and Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.
One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance.
How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?
Which student would read better? Which student would know more? Which student would write better? Which student would have a better
vocabulary? Which student would be more
successful in school… in life?
