The State Math Contest is sponsored by the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Participants

• Participants must be in the top 7% at one of the qualifying sites across NC.

• 123 students qualified in 2005

• There were 55 seniors, 46 juniors, 17 sophomores, 4 freshmen and 1 eight-grader.

• There were 99 males and 24 females.

2005 Participants

• Students came from 46 different high schools, including 4 home school groups.

• For seventy students this was there first State Math Contest.

• One student had been to the State Contest five times prior to this one.

The contest is held at the NC School of Science & Math in late April.

Test Details

• The test consists of two parts:– Multiple Choice: 20 questions, 4 points if

correct, 1 if left blank, 0 if incorrect.– Integer Answer: 15 questions, 5 points if

correct, 0 if incorrect or blank.

• 90 minute time limit.

• Any SAT-approved calculators is allowed.

After the Test

• After the test students are treated to pizza for lunch.

• After lunch students are placed in teams with students from other schools for the Sprints.

• Five problems are done in relay fashion.

• Cash prizes are given to the top 3 teams.
