2. Vision – You have to envision project success and come up with unorthodox ways to complete your project whenever you encounter obstacles.

3. Strategy – You must have a way of how to lead your project team, manage the resources and deal with internal and external stakeholders.

6. Conflict resolution – Conflicts arise whether it is people, stakeholders, or budgets. You as the project manager, must resolves all of these conflicts peacefully for the greater good of project success.

7. Prioritization – You have to determine which objective is the most important at any given time.

8. Planning – you have to fully develop the project management plan plus contingency plans for known unknowns. These contingency plans ensure that the project will progress from initiation to closing without any major hiccups.

9. Decision-making – As the project manager, you are the team’s leader. Your instructions must be decisive and unwavering.

10. Time management – Time is one of the three triple constraints (scope and cost being the other). Having the project on time is one of the biggest guarantees to project success.

11. Process management – it is important to learn when your process is stable. Stable processes equal stable products and services.

12. Interpersonal skills – Soft skills are necessary as a project manager. You can be deal with a team member on time, and be in contract negotiations with the client the next time. Moreover, you are interacting with people at different managerial levels both internally and externally.

13. Specification and measurement – How do you measure success and process stability? As the project manager, you need to write down clear definitions for measurement so if anything goes wrong, you can develop a risk plan response.

14. Budgetary – Cost is one of the three triple constraint (scope and time being the other two). Cost overruns are the biggest reasons for project failures. You must keep a sharp eye on resource expenditures.

15. Communication – this consumes most of the project manager’s time. You have to communicate with the team, upper management, stakeholders, and the client.

16. Risk assessment – Being able to gage a project activity’s risk is important towards deciding the appropriate strategy. You assess risk throughout the project life cycle.

17. Contracting knowledge – Most projects originate from contracts. It is important that you as the project manager possess some contracting knowledge and jargon.

18. Stakeholder engagement and diplomacy – Diplomacy is a big skill to have because sometime stakeholders can be pushy and/or unrealistic with their expectations. You still have to engage and manage them effectively to ensure that you still receive the resources, money and support throughout the project.

19. Change management – Change is the only constant. It is extremely rare that your original project management plan is unvarnished at the end. There will be change requests due to time, scope, quality and cost fluctuations. As a project manager, you must accept, embrace and anticipate changes to develop responses and strategies.

20. Resiliency – Project management is not for the faint-hearted. You must have a thick-skin because whenever something goes wrong during a project (whether or not it is your fault or not), you will be blamed. You cannot take it personal. Just remember, that as the project manager, you are the public face of the project.
