Specification Detail

1.1b Types of weathering, erosion and mass movement on the coastline.

Learning Objectives

● Define and explain the different types of weathering, erosion and mass movement.

Page 4: 2. weathering, erosion and mass movement

Definitions : Weathering● Weathering : Weathering is the breaking

down of rocks through contact with the atmosphere and waters

● In your book, write the definition and draw a small diagram of these three types of weathering.– Biological : Freeze thaw + Onion Skin– Chemical : – Physical :

● Chemical weathering p.28

● Frost shattering (freeze-thaw weathering) p.27

● Exfoliation or onion-skin weathering p.27

Page 9: 2. weathering, erosion and mass movement

● Homework: Photograph an example of each of these processes.– Biological– Chemical– Physical

● You can email me the pictures if you take them on your phone.

Definitions: Erosion● Erosion : The wearing away of material by

a moving force. E.g. water● BBC Bitesize: Here● Label and annotate each of these photos

describing how each process will erode the coast.

● Interactive diagram : Here– Hydraulic action– Corrasion / Abrasion– Corrosion– Attrition

Which processes can you identify in the photograph?

Hydraulic action (air compression plus force of water on cliff)

Corrasion (hurling of stones and pebbles by sea against rock face)

Corrosion / solution

Attrition (the knocking together of pebbles to reduce their size)

Definition: Mass Movement● Mass Movement: This process occurs

when material moves slope due to the pull of gravity (similar to an avalanche but more slowly and not with snow and ice)

● Pg: 44. Use the following pictures. Stick them in your book. Label them and explain the process.– Soil Creep: Gravity slowly pulling the water

contained in the soil down a slope.– Slumping: Common on coasts, large areas of

land slipping down a slope.
