David is King of all Israel.

2 Samuel 6 1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the Ark of God, whose Name is called by the Name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.

David had a very good desire:

Bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem.

Page 4: 2 samuel 6a

4

The desire to keep God close or, better said, to keep close to God is a good desire.

James 4:7-10 (KJV) 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

If there is any distance between a Christian and our God, sin is to blame for it all.

It may be sins of commission or sins of omission.

It may be sins of attitude, or sins of behavior.

The Philistines had taken the Ark of God from the Israelites on the field of battle,

Because of the sins of the priests in God’s House.1 Sam 1-6

For 100 long years the Ark of the Covenant had been separated from the tabernacle and other places of worship.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.

Now Israel has the king whom God chose.

His heart is right with God.

The Ark will be restored to its rightful place.

7

Is thy heart right with God?We can be restored to full

fellowship with our Lord.

First of all -- our sin must break our heart.James 4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

Psalm 34 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite (crushed) spirit.

So, our sin must break our heart.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.

Turn from the sins of the flesh, and turn single-mindedly unto God and righteousness.

Quit fussing and cussing, quit your stinking drinking, let your pride slide, and get right.

2 Sam 6:3 And they set the Ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

To be right with God does not guarantee that we will make no mistakes.

5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

They worshipped with music

Page 12: 2 samuel 6a

12

Celebration of the Goodness of God with music is always a good thing.

Some people get so focused on working for the Lord that they forget to celebrate.

Leviticus 23:39 (NIV) "'So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the LORD for seven days; the first day is a day of rest, and the eighth day also is a day of rest.

Page 13: 2 samuel 6a

13

Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV) 10 Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

Psalm 122:1 (KJV) 1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

Psalm 42:4 (NIV) These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multi-tude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

6 And when they came to Nachon's threshing-floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. 7 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the Ark of God.

Page 15: 2 samuel 6a

15

8 And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez (outbreak against) Uzzah to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?

Proverbs 19 3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

How were they supposed to transport the ark?

Page 16: 2 samuel 6a

16

Page 17: 2 samuel 6a

17

Only certain of the priests were supposed to carry the Ark, and they weren’t supposed to touch it.

God had told them specifically how to transport the Ark.

If David didn’t know, he could have known.

Doing things as God has said is

vital.

Page 18: 2 samuel 6a

18

10 So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

David had made a mistake, God punished him for his error, and David was afraid to continue.

The better thing would have been to ask forgiveness, find out the correct procedure,

And continue to take the Ark home.

When we make mistakes, and we will –

Let us acknowledge our error and repent.

Then keep on keeping on.
