Joab convinced King David to bring Absalom back from exile after three years in

Geshur.

David allowed Joab to bring him back to Jerusalem, but would not allow him in the

palace.

David would not see him at all.

2 Sam 14:25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

Good looks do not indicate good character.

If all one can be praised for is beauty, I think he or she needs to work on character.

But often they think it excuses their bad behavior.

Many a polluted, deformed soul dwells in a fair and comely body.

26 And when he polled his head (cut his hair), (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels (about five pounds) after the king's weight.

6

His hair was his pride.Even though it was very heavy,

he only cut it once a year.People will endure painful things to

feed their pride in appearance.

Psalm 33 1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely (beautiful) for the upright. 2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto Him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto Him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.

Psalm 147 1 Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.

The Bible tells us what is truly beautiful:

1 Chronicles 16 29 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His Name: bring an offering, and come before Him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

True beauty is a life of holiness and good character.

A life set aside unto the Lord is a beautiful life.

Proverbs 31 30 Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

There is nothing wrong with physical grace and outward beauty, but it won’t last.

1 Peter 3:3-4 (TLB) Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on jewelry, or beautiful clothes, or hair arrangement. Be beautiful inside, in your hearts, with the lasting charm of a gentle and quiet spirit that is so precious to God.

A Christian lady or a Christian gentleman is the look that we need to strive for.

To focus on fleeting beauty is vain.

Focus on having a beautiful character, and you will always be beautiful.

2 Sam 14:27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

2 Samuel 18 18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

Clearly his sons all died very young.

28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face. 29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come. 30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

Joab was the man who interceded for Absalom to persuade David to bring him home.

See how evilly he repays the favor.

Page 13: 2 samuel 14b good character is true beauty

13

31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

Page 14: 2 samuel 14b good character is true beauty

14

32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

Ungrateful

An ungrateful heart is never content.

An ungrateful heart complains and gripes

all the time.

Page 15: 2 samuel 14b good character is true beauty

15

Colossians 3 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

It is impossible to enjoy the peace of God in an ungrateful heart.

Gratitude brings Peace and

contentment.

Page 16: 2 samuel 14b good character is true beauty

16

To one who is not thankful unto God life is always wearisome and stressful.

Ecclesiastes 1:8 (TLB) Everything is unutterably weary and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied; no matter how much we hear, we are not content.

That was Absalom in a nutshell.

Page 17: 2 samuel 14b good character is true beauty

17

33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom. Seeming reconciliation

It ain’t real !Absalom is already plotting to overthrow the king.

HypocrisyHebrews 10 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

You can fool all the people some of the time, and you can fool some of the people all the time:

But you can’t fool God.Psalm 24 3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His Holy Place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
