No Longer IArranged by Cliff Duren

Glorious SaviorArranged by Geron Davis and Tyler Brinson

Pray NowArranged by Russell Mauldin

In Galatians 2:20 Paul writes, “It is no longer I who

live, but Christ lives in me.” This bold statement of

faith is the focus of the song made popular by Matt

Redman. We can experience the convicting lyrics

and melody with a moving arrangement by Cliff

Duren.

Originally recorded on the Dove Award-winning

project Splendor of Heaven comes a beautiful

song of adoration and praise. The lyrics by Terrell

Brinson lift high the name of Christ while the

moving arrangement creates an atmosphere of

worship to our great Father.

Acclaimed arranger Russell Mauldin brings us

this number one Southern Gospel radio song

written by Dave Clark, Karen Peck Gooch, and

Michael Farren. The arrangement and moving

orchestration captures the heart of the song and

speaks hope and truth to the church.

How do we achieve a dependence on God that produces a mature faith? Faith is a byproduct of an intentional and personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. When we invest in this relationship, we make a faith deposit that will be available to us when life presents challenges. When your children are healthy or when there is a little extra money in the bank account—faith in God is simple and accessible. In the more strenuous places in life, our faith is truly tested.

Scripture is filled with examples of tested faith. I am reminded of Abraham. In Genesis 22, God asks him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on an altar. Abraham obeys God, even though his son represents far more than just his offspring. Isaac represented the covenant promise of God that all the nations of the earth would come from Abraham. Killing Isaac would not only end his family line but would seemingly sever the covenant promise of God. But God does not break His covenant promises with anyone, especially those who place their faith in Him. Even the author of Hebrews explained that Abraham’s faith was so strong that he believed God might raise Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:19). In the end, God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac and blessed him for his obedient faith.

In this story, we see how Abraham trusted God with his only son because of his relationship with God. Abraham knew God intimately and had seen His faithfulness in every aspect of life. When God told Abraham to act, he could respond in obedience, even when the situation did not make sense. Abraham’s relationship with God should mirror ours as we actively pursue our relationship with Him. Admittedly, our relationship with God does look a bit different now that Jesus has come on to the scene.

Those who preceded Christ on earth had a different level of understanding concerning the nature of God because the Son of God had not yet come. We now have the entire Bible to study and know the rest of the story. Those of us who accept Christ and put our faith in Him carry both a great advantage and an even greater responsibility to understand the difference between belief and knowledge.

The fact that Christ acknowledges our faith in Scripture can be a source of strength for us in difficult times.

Devotional: A Focus on Faith by

Johnson Roberts

Faith is one of the most challenging components of the Christian life. For those of us who call ourselves Christ followers, faith is the evidence that Christ has been given authority over our hearts and, in turn, our lives. For the Christian, faith is hard. When life is difficult we often ask, “Where is God in all of this?” The answer to this question cannot be found in our discovery of where God has escaped to but rather how much we have distanced ourselves from His presence. In our intimate relationship with Christ, our faith grows to maturity and transcends the circumstances of this world.

How Songs Connect by

Johnathan Crumpton

Most people today have knowledge that Christ existed as a man, but fewer believe Him to be the God-Man. Jesus commended those who would one day believe saying, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29). That’s us! Make no mistake: Jesus knew how our faith would look today. He knew how hard it would be to place our faith in things unseen when so many tangible distractions pervert our culture. The fact that Christ acknowledges our faith in Scripture can be a source of strength for us in difficult times.

Believing what we cannot see is synonymous with being a Christian. The author of Hebrews talks poignantly about this when he states, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we cannot see” (Hebrews 11:1). There are two eternally uplifting words in that passage associated with our faith in God. The first is hope. King David acknowledges this by simply proclaiming, “My hope is in you” (Psalm 39:7). In another Psalm, the author explains that God delights in those who put their hope in the unfailing love of God (Psalm 147:11).

By identifying our hope in a loving relationship with Christ, we delight in the Father and align the hope of what we cannot see with the love of God in whom we have placed our faith.

The second encouraging word in the passage from Hebrews is assurance. In life, it is our faith in God that carries us through trials. It is always in the times of turmoil that we need an extra boost of heavenly comfort. Our faith gives us assurance that everything will be okay. God has provided salvation through Christ, so whatever may come, we can join Fanny Crosby singing, “Blessed assurance; Jesus is mine.”

As we navigate life’s challenges and triumphs, we must know this: Faith doesn’t just happen. It is a result of a relationship with God rooted in the truth of Scripture and fueled by the dependence we place on Christ in our lives. In faith, we respond by emulating Christ with our words, work, and actions. Whether in the privacy of our homes or in the spotlight of the pulpit, we must represent Christ. Our hope and assurance is found in Christ alone. Delight in the God who allowed you to wake up this morning. Trust in Christ who relentlessly pursues you. The journey of faith is tough, but be encouraged and do not grow weary in your work. Regardless of the circumstance, put your faith in God—the author and perfecter of your faith.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Johnson Roberts has worked as a Credit Services Representative at Brentwood Benson for ten years. He has a Masters Degree in Religion from Liberty Bap-tist Theological Seminary, and is also a studio musician and worship leader in Nashville. He lives in Thompson Station with his wife and daughter.

Faith doesn’t just happen. It is a result of a relationship with God rooted in the truth of Scripture and fueled by the dependence we place on Christ in our lives.

I think worship songs and hymns can both connect with the congregation in similar ways and both are vital tools of ministry. The reason we still love singing “How Great Thou Art” today is not only because of the powerful lyric but because we have sung it for over 50 years. I remember hearing it when I was just a kid and not understanding how great God really is. I remember the church singing it at the top of their lungs at revivals, and I also remember singing it at my first music ministry position on Wednesday night every time Dan was there. Dan was a faithful member at my church who was unfortunately dying of cancer, so he didn’t make it every week.

STAFF FEATURE

Every time he was there, I made sure we sang his favorite song, “How Great Thou Art.” The congregation sang it with extra fervor when Dan was in attendance as we put our trust in the great God who saves.

The one thing I think we as worship leaders forget is that by the time we sing a song for the first time in a worship service, we have heard it 15 to 20 times and rehearsed it with the band, praise team, and choir several times before the congregation has sung it once. In my time of worship leading, I think it takes a congregation about six times before they take ownership of a song. It takes a year or two before they really connect with the song as they go through different experiences in their lives.

Do you wonder why your congregation isn’t singing out like the choir? Well, the choir rehearses a song several times before they present the choir special, and the choir specials that really work and speak to the people at your church are sung several times throughout the year. The connection with the truths of certain songs is a powerful way to express our worship to God. When you make a connection like that, they seem to never grow old.

As you are introducing new worship songs, sing them enough to give the congregation time to connect with the message. On the fourth Sunday after a new song has been introduced, the praise team has already sung the song 12 times, while the congregation has only sung it 4 times. The congregation is just now starting to connect. Remind the band, praise team, and choir who sing and play the song three or more times to the congregations, the music and worship time is a time of leading and focusing on God (no matter how many times a song is sung).

Also, don’t forget it’s okay to sing those songs that seem old to the cool crowd. I love new songs, but I pulled out “Shout to the Lord” several Sundays ago. It was one of those worship songs I sang so many times in the 90s. I didn’t care if I ever sang it again. However, it is still a great song, and there is a reason why it is still a top worship song in the United States and around the world.

When I started the song with the congregation, you could tell the connection and memories of singing that song were stirred up as they were reminded of powerful times of worship while singing “Shout to the Lord.” When I was talking with people after worship, I consistently heard, “I remember that song when…” and they would fill in the blank from giving their heart to Jesus, to a particular service from their past. The message of these worship songs leave a lasting impression.

Whether it is a brand new song, a classic hymn, or you play with a traditional or contemporary style, it’s important to focus on the truth within the songs more than meeting the two new choruses a month quota. Most of all, make sure the songs connect to the hearts of the people within your church.
