I want to start by thanking ourtroops who risk everything for meto have the freedom that I havehere. They are truly great. Second, thanks to Chief Lerch andLieutenant Dan Maye and theFDNY Mand Library for all oftheir help with this and future arti-cles.

For my inaugural column, Ithink it would only be fitting totalk about a truly stunning fire-house located on 67th Street inManhattan, 39 Engine and 16Truck.

In 1998 it was designated acity landmark by the landmarkspreservation commission. Built in1884 and finished in 1886, this sixstory building was designed byfamed architect Napoleon Lebrun, who would design more than fortyfirehouses for the city during a tenyear span.

This was the first headquartersfor the New York City FireDepartment. Prior to the merger ofthe five boroughs, the BrooklynFire Department had its own head-quarters located on Jay Street indowntown Brooklyn.

Although the departmentwould be officially organized in1865, it would not incorporate theother boroughs until 1898.

This firehouse would alsoserve as the offices of the chief ofthe department, commissionersand staff, as well as the school ofinstruction for probies, medicaloffice and the fire alarm telegraphsystem.

Today, 39 Engine was estab-lished in March of 1875 and 16Truck was established inNovember of 1873, along withHigh Rise Unit No. 2.

After touring this firehousetwice, it is easy to fall in love withits character and Romanesquestyle. It fits in in one ofManhattans nicest neighborhoods, the Upper East Side.

When built, it included a 150foot tall tower that was used as afire watch to scan the horizon forfires. It would be removed twodecades later due to the fact thatlarger buildings were now beingbuilt obscuring its views.

One other note was that thisbeing the training facility all thescaling ladder drills were per-formed here on the rear windowsof the fire watch tower. Chris Hoellof the St Louis Fire Departmentwas hired in 1883 to train theFDNY members in the recentlyinvented Hoell life saving appli-ance, which would later be namedthe scaling ladder.

The use of this device, enabling firemen to go from floorto floor on the outside of the build-ing, is such a daring feat that nomatter what period of time it wasused, absolutely took nerves ofsteel.

When entering this firehouse, itis truly a step back in time...if thesewalls could talk. It makes me wishI was entering inside for the firsttime one hundred years ago to seewhat the times and the men

were like and to see the oldequipment being driven by thehorses.

It was a much more simpletime, but so much more appealingfrom an historic standpoint. I don’tknow what is my favorite feature, from the pink polished granitecolumns that surround the frontdoor to the oval balconies on thethird floor or the ornamental tinceilings and oak interiors. All wasbuilt for $175,000.

Despite its beauty, members dohave to work hard to keep it cleanand very presentable. They do agood job of it and a lot of companypride is present here. I implore any-one who has an affinity for charac-ter and style to see this firehouse.
