SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT:This summer, you are going to read a book about an immigrant, about U.S. relations with Latin America, about the history our city of New Orleans, and about ... bananas!!!

Your assignment is to read and annotate – using the symbols included in this packet and interacting with the text through written comments of your own- The Fish that Ate the Whale by Rich Cohen and then to write an argumentative essay in response to the prompt below. Your essay should be a minimum of 5 paragraphs and is due on the very first day of class in August. You must complete this assignment to remain enrolled in the AP World History class.

Essay Prompt: Consider the environmental, public health, economic and social justice consequences of the United Fruit Company. Is the story of Sam Zemurray and the United Fruit Company a story of progress, exploitation, or both?
