BEANTOWN OPENER FACTS
The Yankees will open the 2010 season vs. Boston, marking the 30th time the two teams will play the season opener against each other, first since 2005 (a 9-2 Yankees win at Yankee Stadium). The Yankees hold the all-time Opening Day advantage
vs. the Red Sox, with an 18-10-1 record…the two teams played to a 4-4 tie in 1910 at Hilltop Park in a game called due to darkness.
This marks the 11th time the Yankees have played their season opener at Fenway Park, first since 1985 (a 9-2 loss)…the Yankees have gone 6-4 in their previous Opening Day games at Boston.
2010 also marks the 10th time the Yankees open the season against Boston as the defending World Champion (NYY has gone 8-1 in those previous games)…nine times the Yankees have opened the season against Boston and advanced to the World Series that same year.
The Yankees are also scheduled to close the regular season at Fenway Park, marking the third such time in franchise history that the two clubs open and close the season in Boston against each other (also 1938 and 1950).

TWO-FOR-ONE: LHP Dave Righetti is the only Yankees pitcher to record both an Opening Day win (1987) and save (1986)…RHP Ralph Terry is the only Yankees pitcher to record a win both as a starter (1963) and in relief (1962).

SUNDAY OPENERS IN FRANCHISE HISTORY
The Yankees’ scheduled 2010 opener—on Sunday, April 4 at Fenway Park—marks the fifth time in their 107-year history that the Yankees will open the season on a Sunday.
April 3, 2005: The only other time the Yankees have played a scheduled season opener on Sunday, winning 9-2 vs. Boston. April 11, 1982: The Yankees were scheduled to open the season at
home on Tuesday, April 6, vs. the Texas Rangers, but a blizzard cancelled both games of the two-game series vs. the Rangers and the first two games of a series vs. the Chicago White Sox…the Yankees were unable to open the season for six days—until Sunday, April 11—doing so with a doubleheader vs. the White Sox)…fittingly, the ceremonial first pitch that day was thrown by Head Groundskeeper Jimmy Esposito, whose crew had worked around the clock for five days to remove snow from the field and the stands (the Yankees lost both games, 7-6 in 12 innings and 2-0). April 16, 1972: After a nine-day players’ strike delayed the start of
the season, the Yankees opened—with a doubleheader—vs. the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium on Sunday, April 16 (the Orioles won the opener 3-1 in a rain-shortened seven-inning affair before rain postponed the second game). April 10, 1959: The Yankees were slated to open the season at
Yankee Stadium on Friday, April 10 vs. the Red Sox, but rain delayed the opener two days until Sunday, April 12 (the Yankees won, 3-2).
