The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your attention to possible hazardousconditions. This manual uses a series of symbols and signal words which areintended to convey the level of importance of the safety messages. The progres-sion of symbols is described below. 9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORDfor the charger. Make sure yourextension cord is in good condition.Conductor size should be in accor-dance with the chart below. Theamperage rating should be listed onthe motor or tool nameplate. Anundersized cord will cause a drop inline voltage resulting in loss of powerand overheating. Your extensioncord must also contain a ground wireand plug pin. Always repair orreplace extension cords if theybecome damaged.

10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do notwear loose clothing, gloves, neck-ties, rings, bracelets, or other jewel-ry which may get caught in movingparts. Non-slip footwear is recom-mended. Wear protective hair cover-ing to contain long hair.

11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES.Also use face or dust mask if cuttingoperation is dusty. Everyday eye-glasses only have impact resistantlenses, they are NOT safety glass-es.

12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or avise to hold work when practical. It’ssafer than using your hand and freesboth hands to operate tool.

13. DON’T OVERREACH. Keep prop-er footing and balance at all times.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE.Keep tools sharp and clean forbest and safest performance.Follow instructions for lubricatingand changing accessories.

15. DISCONNECT TOOLS before ser-vicing and changing accessories,such as blades, bits, cutters, andthe like.

16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNIN-TENTIONAL STARTING. Makesure switch is in off position beforeplugging in.

17. USE RECOMMENDED ACCES-SORIES. Consult the owner’smanual for recommended acces-sories. The use of improper acces-sories may cause risk of injury.

18. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS.Before further use of the tool, aguard or other part that is dam-aged should be carefully checkedto determine that it will operateproperly and perform its intendedfunction. Check for alignment ofmoving parts, binding of movingparts, breakage of parts, mount-ing, and any other conditions thatmay affect its operation. A guard orother part that is damaged shouldbe properly repaired or replaced.

19. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNINGUNATTENDED. TURN POWEROFF. Don’t leave tool until it comesto a complete stop.

CHARGING SAFETY

1. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS andwarnings on the battery and charg-er before charging the battery.

2. CHARGE ONLY USING THE SUP-PLIED CHARGER AND BAT-TERY. Do not use with other batter-ies, chargers or drills.

3. DO NOT EXPOSE BATTERY ORCHARGER TO WET OR RAINYCONDITIONS. Moisture greatlyincreases the risk of a shock haz-ard.

4. DO NOT TOUCH BATTERYPOLES with any conductive materi-als. Touching any two poles at thesame time causes a short conditionand can cause sparks, electricalshock or fire.

5. DO NOT STORE BATTERY WITHCONDUCTIVE MATERIALS.Storing the battery in a box ofscrews or nails can cause shortingacross the battery poles.

6. DO NOT THROW BATTERY INFIRE. Combustion of some of thebatteries’ component materials cancause toxic fumes and possibleexplosion.

7. IF CHARGER LIGHT FAILS TOCOME ON check the incomingpower supply. If power source isokay, then the fuse inside thecharger needs replacement.Charger should be serviced by aqualified electrical technician only.

8. CHARGER HAS A POLARIZEDPLUG (one prong is wider than theother). Do not attempt to modify theplug. Modifying the plug will resultin a safety hazard and will void thewarranty.

9. CHARGER IS DESIGNED TOOPERATE AT 110-120 VOLTS.Never try to plug into any circuit thatis not 110-120 volts. Never modifyor change the plug that is attachedto the charger unit to attempt toplug into 220 volt. This can causeserious electrical damage to theunit, possible fire or explosion.

BATTERY MUST BE RECYCLEDOR DISPOSED OF PROPERLY.Consult your local Yellow Pages direc-tory under the category “Recycling” tolocate a battery recycler in your area.

BEFORE YOU START

First review the contents of your cordlesstool kit and familiarize yourself with the keycomponents. Figure 1 shows the contentsof the kit:

The battery in your new cordless powertool will not be fully charged when youreceive it. To maximize the storage capac-ity of the battery it should be completelydischarged, then fully recharged 3-5 times.

For optimal life span, completely dischargethe battery before recharging. Follow theinstructions below to charge your battery.

Battery charging with the 1 hour“Smart” charger (1 piece charger):

1. Plug the charger into an appropriate110/120V outlet.

2. Insert the battery into the charger.The battery fits into the oval recess inonly one way. Do not force the bat-tery. Insert until it locks into place.

3. The green light over the word “OFF”on the control panel should come on.If it doesn’t, make certain the wall out-let you are plugged into is working. Ifthe outlet power is okay, the fuseinside the charger may have blown.Fuses should be replaced by a quali-fied electrical technician.

4. To begin charging, press the “SET”button. A steady red light over theword “ON” should come on indicatingthe battery is being charged.

Never leave a battery unattend-ed while charging. While charg-ing will make the battery andcharging unit warm, if itbecomes hot to the touch, dis-connect the charger immediate-ly. There is a possibility of firehazard. Have the battery andcharging unit checked by a qual-ified electrical service techni-cian.

5. When the battery is fully charged, thered light will go off and the unit willstop charging. Remove the batteryfrom the charger upon completion ofthe charge cycle.

OPERATION

Inserting Battery Into Drill

1. Insert the battery into the handle ofthe drill so that the long end is for-ward. The battery will only install inone orientation.

2. Make sure the securing clasps oneither side of the drill base engagewith the clips on the battery compart-ment.

Inserting and Removing Bits andDrivers:

1. Set the direction switch, located justabove the trigger, so that it is in thecenter position.

2. Hold the chuck by the collar whileturning the sleeve (the forward sec-tion). See Figure 2. This will causethe three chuck jaws located insidethe recess to open or close depend-ing upon the direction.

3. When the jaws are at the approximatediameter of the bit or driver, insert theshank end of the bit or driver into thejaw opening.

4. Turn the sleeve clockwise until it tight-ens around the bit or driver. Never“power tighten” which is holding thesleeve while running the drill. Thiscan cause a loose grip on the bit ordriver and potential damage to chuckjaws. Check for tightness periodicallywhile using the tool.

5. To release the bit or driver, hold thechuck collar, and turn the sleevecounterclockwise.

Operating this equipment has thepotential to propel debris into the airwhich can cause eye injury. Alwayswear safety glasses or goggles whenoperating equipment. Be certain thesafety glasses you wear meet theappropriate standards of theAmerican National StandardsInstitute (ANSI).

OPERATION, CONT’D

Operating the drill

1. Set the Direction Switch for thedesired rotation of the bit or driver.The direction switch is the slidingswitch located just above the trigger.When looking down on the drill, push-ing the switch all the way to the rightwill give a counterclockwise rotation(normally for loosening fasteners andbits), all the way to the left will beclockwise (normally for tightening fas-teners and drilling holes). When theswitch is in the center position it locksthe switch to avoid accidentally start-ing the drill.

2. Set the Torque Setting Ring locatedjust behind the chuck. This ring has

16 settings on it, and a pointer indica-tor embossed on the drill case. Set on1 for very light applications such asdriving screws into drywall. Use thehigher settings for denser woods andmaterials. Use the drill bit symbolwhen boring holes. Using the propertorque setting will ensure that the fas-tener is not driven too deeply damag-ing the surface material, or in theworst case, stripped out of the holedue to over-torquing.

3. Pull the trigger to activate the drill.This drill is variable speed from 0 -900 RPM, therefore the more you pullon the trigger, the faster the motorand chuck will rotate.

Maintenance

Your cordless power tool will give you hun-dreds of hours of operation time beforeever needing service. The electrical com-ponents of this cordless drill are not userserviceable. Repair should always beundertaken by a qualified electrical repairtechnician.

Keep the drill free from dirt and grease.Always store it in a dry place, preferably inthe case that is supplied.

The battery will require periodic recharg-ing, and eventually replacement after ithas exceeded its recharge life (approxi-mately 800-1000 recharge cycles). Youwill notice extended charging times orshortened operation time as the batteryexperiences more cycles. Battery mustbe recycled or disposed of properly.Refer to the Grizzly catalog for replace-ment batteries.

OPERATING TIPS AND MAINTENANCE

Disassembly and improper reassem-bly of this device can result in electri-cal shock danger. Always have thisdevice serviced by an qualified elec-trical repair technician. Serious injurywill result.

Operating Guides and Tips

Avoid overloading the drill. Always usesharpened drill bits. Do not applyexcessive pressure to the drill whileusing. If the speed drops abnormally,decrease pressure immediately. Ifthe bit stops abruptly or becomesblocked, release the trigger at once.Reverse the direction to free the drillbit.

Ensure the safety of the workplace.Clear the work area of all parts anddebris that may cause injury by flyingobjects. Securely fix the object to bedrilled or fastened in a vise or other-wise clamp to avoid injury. Do notattempt to hold workpiece by hand.

Inspect the drill before use. Run the drillbefore using to ensure all parts arerunning smoothly and there are noabnormal sounds or sparks. If anydefect is found, have unit serviced.

Match your speed to your torque. Uselow torque and high speeds for bor-ing through light materials. Use lowtorque and low speeds for drivingscrews into light materials. For thehighest setting, combine a low speedwith the “Drill Bit” symbol on theTorque Setting Ring.

Know your worksite. Only drill as deepas necessary. Check behind wallsfor wires, other electrical hazards, orplumbing.

Use accessories properly. Use the low-est possible torque setting when dri-ving fasteners. This will increase thelife span of the driving bit and pre-vent damage to the fastener.
