The IFAC World Congress is a forum of excellence for explo-ation at the frontiers of control science and technology, attendedy a worldwide audience of scientists and engineers from academiand industry. The conference provides an up-to-date and com-rehensive picture of control techniques, with a wide coveragef application fields. The 18th IFAC World Congress was held inilano, Italy, from August 28 to September 2, 2011, approximately
alf a century after the 1st Congress in Moscow. The conferencerought together over 2800 attendees from 73 countries who par-icipated in one or more of the 350 sessions that were held at theongress.
The articles included in this special issue are based upon papershich were presented at the IFAC World Congress. These papersere part of the program for Track 6.1: Chemical Process Con-
rol, Track 6.2: Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, or Track 8.4:iosystems and Bioprocesses. The selection process involved thevaluations made by the reviewers for the IFAC World Congressapers and the track chairs. The authors of the identified papersere then asked to submit a journal paper which was based upon
heir conference contribution. The invited articles for this specialssue then underwent the same review process as regular JPC arti-les.
We believe that these papers cover a range of topics of interesto the control community at large and to the readers of this journaln particular. We are grateful to JPC for allowing us to assemble thispecial issue covering the 2011 IFAC World Congress.
