Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,

Welcome Back!

This week the schools of the Archdiocese will celebrate NAIDOC Week. The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages was the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent prior to the rst signi cant European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.

Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on.

Our School Choir will be leading the singing at the Archdiocesan NAIDOC Week Mass at St Christopher’s cathedral this Friday. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families have also been invited to attend this Mass.

We are all very much looking forward to welcoming our special visitors next Monday for Grandfriends’ Day. This is always a wonderful day that is enjoyed not only by our visitors but our students and sta .

Yours sincerelyYours sincerely

CANTEEN NEWSVolunteers at Lowe Street Canteen this week are: Thursday 20 July Erika O’Brien Friday 21 July Betty Crowe

The newly appointed St. Gregory’s School Community Council has now met twice and have some exciting projects underway to support the school, students, families and the surrounding community. Each month, a summary of the discussions will be added to the newsletter to keep everyone up to date.

Funding Requests ApprovedTwo funding requests were approved by School Council at the latest meeting. The rst request was for each Kindergarten and Year 1 class to be resourced with Mathematics picture books to help support children’s inquiries and conceptual understanding of number partitioning and the digit ‘0’. The second request was for over $5000 worth of predictable and appropriate texts for Kindergarten and Year 1 students. There are many students reading above benchmarks and so more books are needed to keep them reading. A great problem to have!

Walk-a-thon and Father’s Day BreakfastThe school walk-a-thon, Father’s Day Breakfast and St Gregory’s Day will be held on Friday, September 1. Sponsorship forms for the walk-a-thon will be sent home with students early in Term 3. Thank you for supporting the school in this healthy fundraising initiative. All money raised will be put towards school improvements for the bene t of our students.

Trivia NightA trivia night will be held in St Gregory’s Hall, MacQuoid Street on Saturday, 21st October. There will be plenty of fun on the night, with silent auctions, coin toss, wine ra e, the major ra e draw and of course the trivia itself. Ra e tickets will be sent home with students early in Term 3. We are asking families to please sell as many as you can (absolutely no pressure to sell them all), and return the money to school as soon as possible. The money raised will go towards school projects and 25% will be donated to ‘Home’. Thank you in advance for supporting the school and our community!

Barn Dance and Family Fun NightTo welcome new families, a family friendly Barn Dance and side show alley will be held on a weekend, early in 2018. While there will be a small cost for children to have a go on a side show ride, the barn dance itself will be at no cost. Further information will be forwarded as it comes to hand.

If you would like to contact the School Council for matters pertaining to fundraising or to volunteer your time for any of the above events, please email: [email protected]
