    Welcome

    WELCOMEMESSAGE FROM THE ESTES PRESIDENT

    Dear colleagues, dear friends,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the European Society for Trauma and Emer-gency Surgery, to the beautiful city of Vienna for the 17th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery.

ESTES has selected a historical place, both regarding trauma care and the European Society. When the meeting first took place in 2002, it was under the umbrella of the European Trauma So-ciety. Vilmos Vecsei, then Chairman of the Department, was among the driving forces to develop both the society and trauma care in Austria. As Vienna had the first trauma hospital in the world, it has been a role model for many surgeons and for those developing trauma care worldwide.

Richard Kdolsky as congress president 2016 and his local organising team put in tremendous work in organising a scientific programme that covers all aspects of trauma care, including truncal and skeletal trauma, non-trauma emergency surgery, and disaster and military medicine. ESTES has put a lot of effort in developing the cooperation with other societies and this is reflected in this years programme. In addition, the programme focuses on registries, innovations, evidence based care and cross border rescue.

We as ESTES members are proud to have a well-functioning society that demonstrates constant growth. Many other societies would have struggled much more to keep the numerous subspecial-ties under the same umbrella. This is certainly a challenge, but offers a platform for open discus-sions and interactions that cannot be achieved in any subspecialty section alone.

In terms of education, ESTES is becoming a front runner, as it will hold the European Board of Surgery exam for the first time. Thereby, the members can combine having scientific input with educational activities. The exam will be part of the curriculum and this offers great opportunities in the future.

ESTES thereby offers a platform to network both within and outside the European Union, a task that even politicians find difficult these days.

I hope that the Vienna meeting will be a further step in the development of our society, an option to meet friends and get to know new ones, to develop the care of the injured patient even further and to acquire scientific knowledge. The personal interaction is becoming more important even in the face of on-line meeting opportunities.

On behalf of ESTES, I would like to express my warmest welcome and look forward to many exciting discussions, friendly get together and social interactions in Vienna!

    Hans-Christoph Pape, ESTES President 2015-2016

    Welcome

    MESSAGE FROM THE ECTES PRESIDENT

    Dear colleagues, dear friends,

It is a great honor to welcome you to the 17th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery from April 24 26, 2016 in Vienna, Austria.

    Myths & Truths

is the leading theme of this congress.

Colleagues of all national ESTES member societies in Europe, as well as from other continents will share their knowledge and experience during these three days.

Instructional lecture courses, keynote sessions, mini-battles, case presentations, and poster ses-sions will present the state of the art in emergency and trauma surgery. Distinguished speakers will share their personal experiences in invited lectures at noon.

Also, in order to intensify the cooperation and understanding within the ESTES community, we have prepared several sessions involving more than one section, e.g.

Mangled extremity in war, disaster and civil Interface between trauma and emergencies Cross border rescue Interface: prehospital & inhospital Nightmare session

    and many more

For the first time, an EBSQ trauma exam will be held in Vienna on April 23, 2016.

Furthermore, a Modular Ultra Sound Estes Course (MUSEC) will be offered.

The 17th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ECTES) is organised by the Euro-pean Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) in close cooperation with the Austrian Trauma Society.

Vienna I am sure you know our keywords like Schnbrunn, Mozart, Apfelstrudel and the Opera. But, you may be certain, Vienna offers much more and will fascinate you with culture, lifestyle, hundreds of restaurants, and lovely places to relax.

Vienna waits for you as Billy Joel sang in 1977

I am glad to be a part of this congress and it will be my pleasure to welcome you to my hometown Vienna!
