Manychangeshaveoccurredovertheyears,ofcourse,andourcurrentdesignadvisorisTomMackenzieofMackenzie&EbertwhopreviouslyworkedwithDonaldSteeleandCompany.Theoutcomeofovereightyyearsofgolfinghistoryisa6,216yardlayoutthatdemandsaccuracyandjudgementratherthanpoweralthoughoncertainholeslonghittersmighthaveanedge!
Andalongtheway,asWalterHagendeclared,“SmelltheRoses”.Picturesque,beautifullytreelinedandwellmaintainedarequalitiesthatnotallcoursesoffer.HaywardsHeathdoes.TherearesometestingelevationchangesandviewsoftheWealdandSouthDownsthatareworthamoment’spausebeforeteeingup.

The Early Years
IntheyearsimmediatelyfollowingtheFirstWorldWar,HaywardsHeathwaslittlemorethanasleepymarkettownwithapopulationof5,090.GoodraillinkstoLondon,however,startedtoattractaninfluxofnewresidents–cityworkerswhowantedthebenefitsoflivinginthecountrysideyeteasyaccesstotheCity.
HoraceFinch,alocalbusinessman,recognisedtheneedtoprovidebetterleisurefacilities. HaywardsHeathGolfClubwasbornwhenFinchboughtRoundWood,somesurroundinggrazinglandandtwo18thcenturybarnswhichrejoicedinthenameofFattingHovel!ThebarnsbecametheClubhouseandanineholecoursewaslaidoutwiththehelpofMajorIGHStenborough,akeenamateurgolfer.
TheClubwasofficiallyopenedonSaturday27thMay1922.Theannualmembershipsubscriptionthenwassixguineas(£6.30).
But,quitesoon,nineholeswereclearlynotenough!
JamesBraid,fivetimeswinneroftheOpenChampionshipandarenownedgolfcoursearchitect,wascalledintoadviseontheextensionofthecourse.
Additionallandbeyondtheridgebesidethepresent16thholewasleasedfromColGHStephensonClarke,ownerofthenearbyBordeHillestatealthoughtheestateretainedhuntingandshootingrightsontheland!Moreextraspacewasobtainedbyrentinga small plot of land to create the present 5th green from Lord Denman’s Balcombe estate. Although horses and carts wereusedtomovetheearth,alltheextensionworkwasdonebyhand!
Thenew18holecoursewasopenedon3rdJune1924whenJamesBraidplayedinafourballexhibitionmatchwiththefamousHarryVardenashispartneragainsttheclubprofessional,GeorgeStephenson,andHerbertRisborough,theclubprofessionalfromLittlehamptonGolfClub.Thelatterpairreturnedabetterballscoreof68,aclosefinishtothe66recordedbythetwostars.

Through the War Years…
In order to have more say in the running of the Club, members decided to buy it from HoraceFinch in 1927. Haywards Heath Golf Club Limited (HHGC Ltd) was set up, financed by the issueof shares and debentures to members, and £7,500 was agreed for the Clubhouse and landoriginallyownedbyFinch.ColStephensonClarkeandLordDenmanagreedtoextendtheleasesontheirland.
Althoughmembershiprosesteadilythroughthe1930sandaftertheendofWorldWarll,theClub’sfinancesremainedonaknifeedgerightuptothe1960s.Fortunately,sympatheticlandlordscametotherescue–LadyDenmanofferedcashforurgentexpensesand,onoccasion,agreedtoforegorentwhileColStephensonClarkealsoprovidedcashaidandrentreduction.SirHenryPriceofWakehurstPlacealsomadeloansanddonationstocovertheClub’sdeficiencies.

In1974,thepresentmembers’club,HaywardsHeathGolfClub,wasformed,leasingthelandandbuildingsfromHHGCLtdin1975.Wearenowintoourthirdlease.In1980theClubwasabletobuyadditionallandfromtheBordeHillestatetocreatewhatisnowthe8thhole.
FormerRyderCupplayer,BillCox,handledtheredesignofthecourseandconstructionofnewholesandgreens.Acompletelynewhole,thecurrent8th,wascreatedandthe11th,12thand13thholeswerelengthenedandredesigned.

Thenewandrevisedcoursewasformallybroughtintoplayin1982withaCharityPro-AmTournament.Sparks,thesportsman’scharity,providedastrongshowbizcontingentandtheeventraisedmorethan£5,000.
TheClubhascontinuedtoincreaseitslandownershipwiththepurchaseofthefreeholdofthelandencompassingthe5thgreenand6thteefromtheDenmanestate in1997andin1998itpurchased13.5acrestothesouthofthe8thgreenwhichisbeingheldinreserveforfuturedevelopment.

Men:- The400membershaveafullgolfingandsocialcalendar.W,earestronglyrepresentedinCountyevents,thehighlightofeach year being the SCGU Scratch PAV Trophy which we won in 2003 and held the Plate in 2009. We also participate in theMid Sussex League with four other clubs – Pyecombe,Worthing, Ifield and Copthorne – with all members of Haywards Heathbenefittingasaresultfromreciprocalreducedgreenfeesateachoftheotherclubsthroughouttheyear.
Ladies:- With around 140 lady members, this is an active, sociable and friendly group in the Club which competes well inCountycompetitionsandhasafullplayingcalendarmainlytakingplaceonTuesdays.
Juniors:- Made up of over 70 boys and girls, this is an active and enthusiastic division of the Club with appointed dedicatedorganisers.Severaljuniorshavegoneontodevelopcareersasprofessionalsinrecentyearsandourjuniorsorganisedintoagegroups for competitions, are also well represented in appropriate County events. Michael Henning’s Golf Academy, provides adedicatedjuniorcoachingprogramme.

Visitors and Societies
Whetheryouchoosetoplayasanindividual,withagroupoffriendsorasamemberofaSociety,wewantyoutohaveanenjoyabletimebothonthecourseandintheClubhouse.
Playing members may introduce up to three guests at a time at the reduced green fee provided they play with their guests.Each guest may play the course up to six times a year at the reduced rate. Juniors may also play as guests if they hold validhandicaps.
