Aim # 8: How did American become a slave society by the late 18th Century?

    The Rise of Slavery (1620-1175)

    A. As indentured servants became more difficult to attract, planters bought more slaves from the Caribbean colonies.

    B. During the 1700’s, the British colonies imported approximately 1.5 million enslaved Africans. Majority went to the West Indies. 250,000 went to the 13 Colonies.

    C. As slavery became the dominant labor force in the South where the soil could support large plantations or single staple crops. A vast, cheap labor force was needed to work in tobacco, rice, and sugar-cane fields. Southern colonies adopted strict regulations for slaves:

    · slave codes – strictly enforced racial slavery and made rebellions more difficult

    · inter-racial marriage (miscegenation) – strictly forbidden

    · define being black as being a slave

    D. In order to justify slavery and the slave trade, racism, became a widely accepted ideology, as theories of black inferiority developed.

    E. Resistance began to develop as slaves rebelled and escaped from their masters
