Warnings

Cord Entanglement!

ALDL connectors are typically located in the driver’s foot well. Route the ‘USB-ALDL Cable’ and

secure to prevent cord entanglement with the driver’s feet and legs.

Don’t Operate While Driving!

Do not operate this device while driving. Make sure your vehicle is off the road and transmission is

in park/neutral with emergency brake set. Most Datalogging applications provide a data recording

feature. Utilize this feature for your safety. If device is operated while vehicle is moving, bring a

passenger in the vehicle to operate the device.

Flashing ECMs!

Flashing ECMs is a process with inherent risk to ECMs, possibly resulting in data corruption and

possible ECM failure. Take all precautions possible when flashing an ECM. Make sure the vehicle

battery has plenty of power. Make sure all connections between the ALDL connector and PC are

clean and secure. Make sure computer is connected to an AC wall outlet. Make sure that all power

saving features (hibernate, suspend) are disabled on the PC. Make sure no other connections are

made between the vehicle and the AC wall outlet that may cause ground issues, such as a vehicle

battery charger. 1320 Electronics is not liable for damaged ECMs.

Disclaimer: 1320 Electronics is not liable for damaged ECMs.

Configuration

The USB-ALDL Cable is capable of receiving data on ALDL pins D, E, or M. The USB-ALDL Cable is capable

of the inserting a 10K resistor across pins A&B of the ALDL connector to initiate communication on some

160 baud vehicles. Email 1320 Electronics LLC if you need help determining either of these

configuration settings.

Switch 4

If the 10K resistor is required across terminals A&B, configure switch 4 of the USB-ALDL connector to

‘ON’. Otherwise switch 4 should be ‘OFF’.

Switches 1,2,3

Switches 1,2, and 3 are used to configure which pin is used for ALDL communication. Switches 1,2, and

3 correspond to pins M, E, and D respectively. Only one switch should be on at any time.

If communication is via pin M of the ALDL connector, switch 1 should be ON, and switches 2 and 3 OFF.

If communication is via pin E of the ALDL connector, switch 2 should be ON, and switches 1 and 3 OFF.

If communication is via pin D of the ALDL connector, switch 3 should be ON, and switches 1 and 2 OFF.

Automatic Driver Installation

On most versions of Microsoft Windows, Driver Installation occurs automatically when the USB-ALDL

Cable is connected to the PC.

Windows 7 Automatic Driver Installation is documented below. Other versions are similar.

1. Turn power ON to PC. Do not connect USB-ALDL Cable at this time.

2. With computer powered on and the main desktop present, connect the USB-ALDL Cable.

3. The ‘Device Driver Installing’ pop up window should appear in tool bar notification area.

4. After a few minutes, the ‘Device Driver Successfully Installed’ pop up window should appear in

tool bar notification area.

LED Operation

8192 Baud Vehicles

The Green LED will blink when the PC transmits a command to the ECM. If the USB-ALDL Cable is

connected properly to the ECM, the Red LED will also blink when the PC transmits. If only the Green LED

blinks, verify that the correct data pin is selected via switches 1-3.

The Red LED will blink when the PC receives data from the ECM.

160 Baud Vehicles

The Green LED will not blink on 160 baud vehicles. The PC does not need to send requests to the ECM

for data

The Red LED will blink when the PC receives data from the ECM. 160 baud vehicles constantly transmit

data. The PC application needs to configure the USB connection properly for the Red LED to blink.
