CURRENCY AND MONEY EXCHANGE
12
13
There is no limit on the amount of currency that may be brought in or out of Japan. However, if you exceed 1,000,000 yen (or its equivalent in foreign currency including cheques and security bonds), this must be declared at customs when entering or leaving the country.
The official unit of currency is yen. Coins are available in denomina_ons of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen and bank notes in denomina_ons of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen. Japanese currency may be exchanged at authorised foreign currency exchangers, including official banks. At the interna_onal airports, currency exchange counters are open during regular office hours (9-‐6 pm). The exchange rate fluctuates daily depending on the current economy and financial market.
14
BANKS & ATM'S Foreign credit and cash cards can be used at post offices and at ATMs hosted by Seven Banks, which are located throughout Japan. There are over 26 000 ATMs and post office’s available which accept a range of local and interna_onal cards. ATM’s that accept interna_onal cards display a sign, which highlights the networks that are accepted; cards from the Cirrus, PLUS, Maestro and VISA networks are open accepted. ATMs in the post office are accessible only during opera_ng hours of the Post Office. Local yen can also be withdrawn at Seven Bank ATMs, which are found in 7-‐11 convenience stores throughout Japan. These ATMs are available 24/7 and can be translated into English, Korean, Chinese and Portuguese. Cash cards from the PLUS networks and accepted credit cards include VISA, American Express, JCB and UnionPay.

Interna_onal credit cards are generally accepted across Japan, including VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club. Credit cards are widely accepted in major ci_es and in major establishments, but it is not always convenient nor readily available outside big ci_es so obtaining cash beforehand is recommended when travelling to the countryside.
