Unassuming Nighttown has been aNortheast Ohio destination since '65

By Joe CreaJanuary 20, 2018

It's easy to rattle off a list of Cleveland's trove of cultural treasures. While you list theCleveland Museum of Art, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Western Reserve Historical Societyand so many others, one unassuming gold mine can't be overlooked.

Nighttown, a weary-looking stone-frontedstorefront that stares stoically from its perch onCedar Hill, is easily passed by. The bold blackawning drawn over its portal intrigues — yettens of thousands of commuters nary give it aglance, never knowing the magic and maniawoven within those storied walls.

Equal parts jazz club, restaurant and wateringhole, Nighttown has been a Northeast Ohiodestination — and eventually an institution —since it first opened on Feb. 5, 1965.

It's a true "joint." The place recalls some New York City haunt, maybe somewhere in theBowery, from a hundred years back. Read more

Rising Trumpet Star and Seasoned Pianist form Dynamic Duo live at Nighttown!

Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "ShortStories" -- a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres andgenerations united by the trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringingtogether songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kingsas well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musicaluniverse, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have anarrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that WyntonMarsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001,Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as theinaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazz curriculum.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can'texist without these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of thecoming together of two kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same hometown (Cleveland, Ohio), separated by just under half a century in age. What unitesthem is a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines the highest musical standardswith a desire to be agents of change.

Amazingly, Farinacci found time during his Middle East years to also play anintegral role in the conception and build out of Cuyahoga Community College'sTommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts.

Nighttown favorite Joe Hunter has released two popular CD's in recent years.

Legends hit the Stage at Nighttown!

Featuring: Bob Kidney-guitar & vocals, Jack Kidney-harmonica, sax, keys, &

vocals, Terry Hynde-sax, Bill Watson-bass, & Clint Alguire-drums.

15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national musicpublication and several international publications since the beginning of their 30years of live performances and recordings. Many fans are under the impression thatthe band remains obscure by choice. In fact, they have never been offered acontract from any recording company in the industry, ever.

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The musicindustry is not about music anymore. It is about selling products the public canrelate to. After all, it is a business. Even "alternative" music has become a label. The founder of the band, Robert Kidney, explains, "The music industry, the media, and the tellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is goodmusic by only playing and supporting what is profitable. We are taught to disregardeverything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the people our best. Our effort goes into being creative, unique and original. We define our own sound. There are no rules because we don't play the game. We are not in it for the game,we're in it for the music."

So, the band continues to create and evolve outside of the "Rock & Roll"establishment. The majority of the recordings were financed by friends. Hundredsof photographs taken of the band in different stages of it's existence by differentamazing people tell a story of intense performances, long nights, and the passing oftime. Band members have come and gone, and returned again. Robert sees musicas much more than an emotional release or a performance.

The title of the band has always aroused curiosity from fans. The fans called themThe Numbers because it was easier than trying to get the figures right. Numbershad not been used in a name before, and the political climate in 1970 was quiteOrwell-ian. Robert choose a sequence of numbers mentioned in a book written byPaul Oliver called The Blues Fell This Morning. In the chapter "The Jinx Is On Me",Oliver describes the Numbers Racket popular in Harlem in the 1950s and howdreams were analyzed as number sequences and used for placing bets. The band'smusic theory specialist, Terry Hynde, also discovered that 15 divided 15 is 1, 60divided by 15 is 4, and 75 divided by 15 is 5. In a musician's world, "1, 4, 5," isreferred to as the "universal progression".

The band resides in northeast Ohio. They have several recordings under their beltand more music than they can afford to release.

The trio performs regularly in the setting of The Harp Irish pubon Cleveland's west side, and they will bring this infectious energy to theirrenditions of the lilting tunes and songs that tell the story of the Irish communitiesliving on both sides of the Atlantic.

BRIAN BIGLEY comes from a musical family on the west side of Cleveland.Studying with Achill Island piper Michael Kilbane from the age of eight, Brian'ssensitivity to the art of uilleann piping has developed into a high level ofunderstanding. His interest in maintaining the best sound possible led Brian tostudy the art of pipe-making with Seth Gallagher in upstate New York and timespent with flute maker Patrick Olwell. He is currently making pipes in the style ofthe late Dave Williams and is an accomplished reed maker.

Brian is also a world-class Irish step dancer, having competed at the WorldChampionships in Glasgow and Killarney. He has toured extensively throughoutNorth America and Europe as a pipe, flute, and whistle player, as well as a dancerwith "The Magic of Ireland" and "Tomaseen Foley's A Celtic Christmas"(tomaseenfoley.com). BRIAN HOLLERAN grew up in an Irish family in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hisinterest in traditional Irish music was first piqued at the age of twelve afterlistening to the session recording "Music at Matt Molloy's," and later his father'strad vinyl collection. His mother found him initial tin whistle lessons with MauraVesey and finally flute lessons with 2010 NEA National Heritage Fellow Mike Raffertyof Ballynakill, East County Galway. Mike taught Brian the bulk of his music andwould become Brian's biggest influence and source of encouragement. In additionto many tunes, Mike also taught Brian about the many musicians who came out ofEast Galway and the distinctive traits of that regional style.

Brian was also influenced by Willie Kelly and Patrick Ourceau, two of the greatestexponents of traditional Irish fiddle playing in the United States.

Originally from Dublin, guitarist/vocalist RUAIRÍ HURLEY has been performing, recording, and collaborating within the Northeast Ohio traditional music scene forseveral years. 8 String Guitar Virtuoso and his Group return to Nighttown!

As a young guitarist growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Charlie Hunter waslooking for a way to stand out in the '80s. His primary influences were jazz greatJoe Pass and the fluid Tuck Andress (of the guitar/vocal duo Tuck & Patti), both six-string guitarists who were adept at blending bass notes into their standard guitarmelodies to make themselves sound like two musicians at once. But Hunter wantedto take it one step further, and set out to find an instrument on which he couldsimultaneously function as both a guitarist and a bassist. For his self-titled 1993debut CD, Hunter played a seven-string guitar for the duality effect, locking downthe bottom with drummer Jay Lane and mixing melodically with saxophonist DavidEllis. But on his trio's 1995 sophomore release, Bing, Bing, Bing!, Hunter unveiledhis custom-made Novax eight-string, the guitar that finally allowed him to realizehis capacity. Designed by Ralph Novak, the instrument featured special frets andseparate signals for its guitar and bass portions. Picking bass notes with his rightthumb while fretting them with his left index finger (while at the same timefingerpicking guitar chords and single notes with his right hand's remaining four

fingerpicking guitar chords and single notes with his right hand's remaining fourdigits as he frets with his left hand's other three fingers), Hunter achieves the realsound of two-for-one.

Hunter played with the side group T.J. Kirk in the mid-'90s, a band that derivedtheir name from the cover material they exclusively played: Thelonious Monk,James Brown, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Initially wanting to call themselves JamesT. Kirk before being threatened by the Star Trek TV and film series, T.J. Kirkreleased a self-titled 1995 debut and the 1996 follow-up, If Four Was One, beforedisbanding. Hunter took drummer Scott Amendola with him for his next project, anambitious instrumental remake of Bob Marley's Natty Dread album in its entirety. Also featuring saxophonists Kenny Brooks and Calder Spanier, the 1997 releasebeat the odds by becoming arguably Hunter's best album. After Spanier died frominjuries sustained from being hit by a car, Hunter moved east to New York, takingAmendola with him. Teaming with vibraphonist Stefon Harris and percussionistJohn Santos, Charlie Hunter & Pound for Pound's 1998 CD Return of the Candymanis dedicated to Spanier. A departure from Natty Dread, mainly due to the work ofHarris, the disc featured a vibes-heavy cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle."

Many more Concord releasesfollowed in the 1990s as well as 3 releases for the Telarc label as co-leader of thegroup Travelin’ Light. The early 2000′s found Vignola recording a solo guitar CD forAcoustic Disc as well as performing regularly with guitarist, Les Paul. This alsomarked the time that Frank began working with record producer Joel Dorn as wellas making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Recordswith the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark O Connor and Wynton Marsalis. He also recorded a collection of Gershwin pieces for Mel Bay Records titled, “VignolaPlays Gershwin” which was number 2 in NPR radio airplay charts. Dominick Farinacci Quintet$30.00 Friday 4/13 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Rising Trumpet Star and his Group Back by Popular Demand Live at Nighttown!

During his schoolyears and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as asoloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz atLincoln Center and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildestdreams. Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened hisactivities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through hismusic and outreach activities, to unite communities and overcome barriers of everysort.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to havelost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into yourconsciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacciis not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, but also thatwhat is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's own words:"While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come to representa culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music& wellness and community-based cultural collaborations - unfolding in the musicand touring around the world."

The Alt$20.00 Tuesday 4/17 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Celtic and Folk Music from Supergroup featuring John Doyle ( From Solas), Cathy

Jordan (from Dervish) & Eamon O'Leary.

The Alt – Irish: Three masters of Irish music—Asheville guitarist John Doyle;vocalist , Bodhran and Bones player and Dervish’s very own front-woman CathyJordan, and singer and guitar and bouzouki player Eamon O’Leary—have cometogether to celebrate the songs andspirit at the core of the tradition. The ballads, tunes, and new and rediscovered songs each artist brings to The Alt reflect theirlove of the traditional music that has been a touchstone of Irish identity forgenerations. They also build on the heritage of Irish immigrants who settled inAppalachia, where Irish song provided some of the building blocks for old-time,country, and bluegrass. In choosing to record their first album, the eponymouslytitled The Alt, at a cabin in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, The Altembraced this fruitful musical lineage.

John Doyle: Name many of the most notable recordings and/or performers in Irishmusic and it's a fair bet that John Doyle had something to do with them. LizCarroll; Eileen Ivers; Karan Casey; Solas; Michael Black; Mary Black; the trio ofMcCusker, McGoldrick and Doyle; The Teetotalers (Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford,John Doyle); and now Usher's Island (Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick,Paddy Glackin and John Doyle) - a veritable who's who of the greatest names inIrish music. From a musical family in Dublin, John’s influences include well knownEnglish folk singers Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, and TheWatersons; Scottish singers Dick Gaughan and John Martin; and fellow IrishmenPaul Brady and Al O’Donnell as well as his father, Sean Doyle - probably the biggestinfluence of all.

In 1991 Cathy Jordan joined Sligo based traditional group Dervish and started herrecording career with the Dervish album "Harmony Hill" to huge critical acclaim. This saw Cathy returning to her roots of raditional music and song and sparked offa musical journey which has spanned nearly 3 decades. During that time Cathy hasbeen the front woman and bodhran player with the group and has led themthrough thousands of concerts in hundreds of cities in nearly 40 countries. Someof the more memorable of these were playing at the Great Wall of China, theWailing Wall in Jerusalem and at the biggest rock music festival in the world - Rockin Rio to over 250 thousand people.

Eamon O’Leary is one of the most in-demand Irish vocalists and guitarists in theUS today. Eamon started playing Irish music while growing up in Dublin throughhis friendship with the Mayock family, traditional musicians from County Mayo. When he moved to New York City in the early 90’s, he immersed himself in thecity’s traditional music scene and travelled widely, performing with many of thegreat players in Irish music.

After Selling out their Solo Shows in January, Nighttown is proud to Present these

Two World Class Guitarists Together For the First Time!

International Summit Meeting with Stanley Jordan (USA) and Diego Figueiredo

(Brazil). World Premier Live at Nighttown!!

In a career that took flight with immediate commercial success and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musicalpersona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it boldreinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits,to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works. Jordancan always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into theunexpected.

Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on theguitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan'sinnovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While ahandful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence.

But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. Hismusic is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination oflisteners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordanwanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied pianoprinciples to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody andchords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence.

To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He hasperformed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord JazzFestival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s hecollaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakeyand Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke.

Diego Figueiredo is a new star of the guitar world. He is only 35, and he hasrelease 23 Cds, 3 DVDs, and he has playing in more than 60 contries around theworld. He is winner of several important competitions like Montreux JazzCompetition, VISA Prize and some others. Diego is presenting now his new concert“ From Classical to Jazz”. It is a fusion between Jazz, Bossa nova and Classicalmusic. Diego has an unique interpretation, with a lot of technique, much emotion, and his show has been a great success to audiences.

Brazil continuously fosters new stars that impress and amaze their audiences withtheir joy and exceptional technique. Diego Figueiredo makes new fans everytime heenters the stage, and very few others play the guitar as expressively as he does.

Diego has recorded and performed with big names like Gilberto Gil, João Bosco,Roberto Menescal, Toquinho, Belchior, Fafá de Belém, Angela Maria, Toninho Horta,Larry Coryell, Ken Peplowski, Lewis Nash, John Clayton, Cyrille Aimée and manyothers.

Chicago Harmonica Legends and All Around Great Musicians! Live on the

Nighttown Stage!

Featuring: Corky Siegel-Harmonica & Vocals (From the Siegel-Schwall Band),

Howard Levy (From Bela Fleck & the Flecktones)-Harmonica and Piano.

Corky Siegel is known internationally as one of the world’s great blues harmonicaplayers, and is a celebrated composer, blues pianist, singer, songwriter, band leaderand author.

Born in Chicago in 1943, Corky’s professional music career began when he foundedthe now legendary Siegel-Schwall Band in Chicago in 1964 with guitarist JimSchwall. The group was a major component of the young generation of white bluesartists—also including Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, Harvey Mandel, BarryGoldberg, Nick Gravenites and Michael Bloomfield—who learned the historic Chicagoblues style at the feet and hands of such towering figures as Muddy Waters, Howlin’Wolf, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy and Sam Lay.

Corky played with all these greats at Siegel-Schwall’s first steady engagement, in1965 at Peppers, Chicago’s internationally renowned blues club. They were soonsigned to Vanguard Records, with blues luminary Samuel Charters producing. Their

signed to Vanguard Records, with blues luminary Samuel Charters producing. Theirfirst album, The Siegel-Schwall Band, was released in 1966, and with it the groupmade San Francisco a virtual second home: There the likes of Janis Joplin, Santana,Steve Miller and Joni Mitchell opened for them (Siegel-Schwall actually producedMitchell’s demo tape); the band would record three more classic albums forVanguard up through 1970, then five for Wooden Nickel/RCA through 1974 beforegoing on hiatus.

After releasing three solo albums, Corky founded Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, featuring himself on harmonica, piano and vocals, the West End String Quartet oftopflight Chicago classical string players, and Frank Donaldson on world percussioninstruments. The novel ensemble performed Siegel’s pioneering blues/classicalmusic compositions and released its first album, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, onChicago’s famed blues label Alligator Records in 1994.

Howard Levy is equally at home in Jazz, Classical music, Rock, Folk, Latin, andWorld Music, he brings a fresh lyrical approach to whatever he plays.

Howard Levy is a musician without limits. Composer, Grammy Award winner, multi-instrumentalist, he is best known for his astonishing harmonica playing, which hasearned him the admiration of audiences worldwide. This has made him a favoriteand a recording artist sought after by the likes of The Flecktones, Kenny Loggins,Dolly Parton, Rabih Abou Khalil, and Paquito D, Rivera, Styx, Donald Fagen, andPaul Simon.

All About Jazz says, “Levy’s harmonica playing is startlingly fluid and full of thetechnical prowess that would be expected from the genre’s top saxophonists, notfrom an instrument that is often associated with campfire cowboys and Mississippibluesmen…These musicians have come together to prove, once again, that it’s notnecessary to only look to New York for the best in American jazz.”

It is only natural then that Corky Siegel and Howard Levy, two of Chicago’s mostrevered and celebrated music treasures, would come together to make peoplelaugh while knocking them flat with jaw dropping virtuosity.

CD Release Party! Playing Music from her Brand New CD "Sister Orchid"!

Back by Popular Demand! Singer Songwriter, Pianist, & Comedienne

Live on the Nighttown Stage!

Conjuring the image of a lonely all night truck stop along highway 1 on theCalifornia coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline.. thisalbum speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea. Sister Orchid was conceived in solitude, executed in darkness. It comes from aplace of quiet, a world of low lights and cool drinks, up against a hard wall. Anoasis of hungry eyes and easy promises, warm as a biscuit, the kind of place yourmother warned you against.

Nellie McKay has released six relatively accomplished albums, won a Theatre WorldAward for her Broadway portrayal of Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, co-created and starred in the award winning off-Broadway hit Old Hats, and haswritten musical biographies around a compelling gallery of ladies - fromenvironmental pioneer Rachel Carson to the life, conviction, and execution at SanQuentin of the underdog Barbara Graham, and most recently The Big Molinsky –Considering Joan Rivers, as well as A GIRL NAMED BILL – The Life and Times ofBilly Tipton, named one of the Best Concerts of the Year by The New York Times.

A recipient of PETA's Humanitarian Award in recognition of her dedication to animalrights, Nellie is an annoyingly vocal advocate against war, capitalism and the two-party system that sustains it.
