Why do we use lip balms? Lips are used in so many different activities – we use them in facial expressions, when we talk, when we eat, when we drink and when we kiss. Given how much we use them, it’s important to keep your lips soft and supple and to keep the skin on your lips healthy. The skin on your lips is comprised of only 3-5 cellular layers, which is why your lips can so easily start to bleed if they are chapped or dry, or if you pick the skin off them. In comparison, the skin on your face contains up to 16 cellular layers. The skin on your lips is also generally much lighter in colour than the rest of your body’s skin. Particularly in light-skinned people, your lip skin contains fewer cells called melanocytes – these are the cells that produce melanin, which determines our skin colour. Given that your lip skin is only 3-5 layers deep, there are no sweat glands. This means that your lip skin doesn’t sweat and it doesn’t produce sebum, your skin’s natural oil. Without sweat and sebum your lips dry out quicker than other parts of your skin. Dry skin is damaged quicker, which is why chapped lips are such as a common occurrence. A lip balm effectively provides that protective layer that you would normally get from your skin’s natural oils. In covering your lips with an occlusive layer, it does two things – firstly, it locks moisture in and secondly, it makes it harder for the heat and cold to dry out your lips.

All natural lip balms are a blend of waxes and emollients (skin-softening plant oils and butters) and essential oils for fragrance and flavour. You can choose ingredients purely for their smells; fruity essential oils are popular because they taste like fruit too. You can also just make plain lip balms which are just a blend of waxes and butters with no overt flavour or scent to them at all. When making your own lip balms, keep in mind that the blend needs to be fairly thick so that it sticks to the lips and doesn’t just drip off or absorb too fast. A good balm should have staying power!

How to make a lip balm

WARNING! Because we are using essential oils on our lips (which as we just saw have very thin skin), we only use a maximum 1% dilution of essential oils. Essential oils are effectively potent natural chemicals which contain sensitisers. We don’t use essential oils neat on the skin and we don’t use high percentages of essential oils on our lips. Some of the recipes in this book also use citrus essential oils which are can cause sensitivity in some people and need to be used at a low concentration.

Once you understand how to formulate a generic lip balm, you will be able to design and create your own formulations. Play around with the ratios to find the ones that you enjoy best and remember that certain ingredients such as coconut oil behave differently in colder or hotter climates so you might have to adjust your recipe slightly. •  30% Wax •  30% Plant Butter •  30% Plant Oils •  5% Vitamin E or botanical extracts •  4% lecithin (gives creamy texture) •  1% Essential oil maximum When you want to design your own formula from scratch, this is a generic lip balm percentage formula that you can use as a template. Vegans Although beeswax is the most common wax to be used in lip balms, there is a vegan alternative— it’s called Candelilla wax and comes from a Brazilian palm. Method All natural lip balms are made the same way—by melting the waxes, butters and plant oils in a bain-marie and then removing the blend from the heat to allow to cool slightly before adding the essential oils. The balm is then quickly poured in little 10ml lip balm pots and then allowed to cool and harden fully.

Waxes give hardness to your lip balm. If no waxes are used the lip balm may melt too fast (particularly in warmer climates) and slide off your lips.

7

Lip Balm Ingredients: Waxes

•  Candelilla wax — a pale yellow hard wax often sold in granular form, it is slightly harder and more brittle than beeswax and has a melting point of 67-71 degrees C. As it comes from a palm it is therefore suitable for vegans. Use instead of beeswax for a vegan option. You might have to use slightly less as it can set harder.

Please note Waxes such as rose wax, soy wax and almond wax are not true waxes, they have been chemically altered and cannot be claimed to be 100% natural.

Two natural waxes include: •  Beeswax — a golden honey-

scented wax produced by bees. Beeswax has a melting point of 62-64 degrees C and shouldn’t be heated above 85 degrees C. It is a soft wax and helps to emulsify the other ingredients in the blend.

Plant butters form the creamy nourishing part of your lip balm. They are natural moisturisers and help to protect the skin on your lips.

8

Lip Balm Ingredients: Butters

•  Cocoa butter - In its basic form cocoa butter is sold as a yellowy hard butter which has a delicious chocolate scent. Cocoa butter is solid at room temperature (in our colder climates!) but liquefies around body temperature so it melts when it comes into contact with our skin. This rich plant butter is highly moisturising and hydrating because of this melting point which is why it is perfect for use in soaps, lip balms and body butters

•  Mango butter — a white butter from the mango pip, thick and soft and creamy.

There are lots of different natural butters for you to experiment with! These are the basic natural plant butters in skincare, but you can have lots of fun experimenting with Kombo, Murumuru, Cupuacu or Illipe butters, to name but a few other options.

Examples of natural butters include: •  Shea butter — an off-white sticky

butter that is very moisturising and has good staying power once applied. It is also claimed to have some protection from UV rays.

Plant oils add extra nutrition and skin-repairing properties to your lip balm. They also act as occlusive agents, creating a barrier effect which prevents moisture from being lost.

9

Lip Balm Ingredients: Plant Oils

Examples of natural plant oils include: •  Evening Primrose oil - rich in unsaturated

fatty acids which are used to repair and maintain skin tissue.

•  Rosehip oil - high in essential fatty acids,

which are thought to smooth wrinkles by hydrating the skin.

•  Apricot oil - similar in makeup to almond oil, apricot kernel oil is also a great emollient and nourishing oil.

•  Avocado oil – extracted from the flesh of the avocado, this oil is

high in Vitamin E which can improve the condition of the skin.

•  Calendula oil – obtained by infusing calendula’s orange petals in another vegetable oil in order to extract its properties. Calendula is known for its great skin properties and can be for chapped and dry skin.

•  Sea buckthorn oil – contains high levels of essential fatty acids

and is used to heal skin injuries such as eczema.

Essential oils add fragrance, flavour and botanical skin conditioning properties. They are potent natural ingredients and should only be used at a maximum concentration of 1% dilution (so if you make a 10g lip balm, don’t use more than 0.1g essential oil!).

10

Lip Balm Ingredients: Essential Oils

Examples of essential oils which are suitable for lip balms include: •  Citrus & fruit oils – orange, grapefruit, blood

orange, lime and lemon. Citrus oils are photo-sensitising so they can make you more sensitive to the sunlight, which is why they should be used in low concentrations of no more than 0.5%.

•  Floral oils – lavender, rose geranium, neroli and chamomile. •  Spice oils – cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and vanilla.

•  Herbal oils – peppermint, benzoin, patchouli, frankincense and myrhh.

If you ever need advice on the maximum permitted concentrations of essential oils and any restrictions, visit the the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) website at http://www.ifraorg.org/

Lip balms do not require much equipment to make, just a few simple kitchen items and that’s it!

11

Equipment

For preparing ingredients, you will need: •  Sharp knives and chopping board for harder

waxes and butters

•  Cheese grater for cocoa butter

•  Mini whisk for stirring

•  Digital kitchen scales for measuring out tiny amounts of butters and oils

•  Small containers for holding oils for weighing

For melting & making, you will need: •  A bain-marie or double boiler to melt your butters and waxes

gently. This is just a bowl on top of a pan of simmering water. •  A tea towel or oven mitt to protect your hands when you

remove the bowl of molten butters/ waxes •  A selection of lip balm pots and jars to pour your products into

•  Sticky labels so you can label each lip balm with the name and date

This eBook makes every attempt to provide good, honest advice about beauty product ingredients. We make no guarantees of success, but strive to provide you with good quality advice for home-made beauty products that can help improve your beauty and skincare regime. Please be aware that the advice provided in this eBook is not intended as a replacement for professional medical/dermatological treatment and advice for any skin or health problems. Some herbs and/or their essential oils may interact with prescription drugs. Should you indeed suffer from any skin or health problems and seek to use these natural beauty ingredients as self-medication, we strongly advise you to consult a medical practitioner before using any of these beauty ingredients, especially if you have an existing medical condition, are taking medication, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. Please be aware that the advice provided in this eBook is intended only for application to the skin and hair. Do not apply the beauty ingredients described in this eBook to other parts of the body. Do not use any of these beauty ingredients on children under the age of two and check the cautions on any specific ingredients before using on older children.

Any individual can be allergic to even the most benign of natural ingredients. Don’t use any ingredients to which you know you are allergic. Always do a 24-hour skin test before using to check for allergies, particularly if you have never used one of the ingredients before. When doing a skin test, apply a small amount to your inner arm, just below the elbow, or on your wrist, cover with a lint-free dressing and leave for 24 hours. If there is any soreness, redness or irritation, your skin is having an allergic reaction and you should not use the ingredient. It is recommended to buy organic ingredients, wherever possible. Fruit and vegetables are often sprayed with pesticides and these can be harmful irritants, particularly when applied directly to the skin. Always wash fruit and vegetables properly before use in any DIY beauty treatments.

Home-made cosmetics have no preservatives to give them a long shelf-life, unlike the ones you buy in the shops. The advice in this eBook has been written under the assumption that these ingredients will be used immediately. If you do choose to store your beauty products for a few days after you make them, please note the following instructions: •  Make sure that your storage jars and/or bottles are completely sterile. You can sterilise glass storage

containers by washing them thoroughly in hot soapy water, then placing them in a warm oven (130°C) for half an hour.

•  Always follow the storage guidelines. Home-made beauty products keep for longer when stored in the fridge. Make sure to discard any beauty products that smell bad or have changed in texture.
