place to manage all

hazards

PATHOLOGICAL

who cares as long

as we’re not caught

REACTIVE

Safety is important

we do a lot every

we work on the

problems that we

still find

Standard of Safety Practice

Old Generation

⦿ Minimal focus on safety.

⦿ Strong focus on cost

control, which limits or

neglects safety in the

overall budget.

⦿ Limited channels of

communication,

information takes time to

be shared.

New Generation

⦿ Safety is prioritized In all

aspects.

⦿ Strong focus on safety

implementation and use

of safety systems.

⦿ Information can be

shared instantaneously

allowing quick response

time and convenient

information sharing.

Challenges to implementation of Safety

⦿ Cost

› Higher cost when implementing safety requirements.

⦿ Time

› Slower progress as some safety requirements take

time to be implemented.

⦿ Effort

› Involvement of man-hours for safety activities which

slows progress.

⦿ Leadership and employee engagement

› fostering a culture in which safety is fully integrated

in the business and is shared responsibility among

all employees.

Challenges to

implementation of Safety (Con’t)

⦿Safety management systems › setting a framework of processes and procedures to

ensure tasks are completed and objectives are met

⦿Risk reduction › striving to reduce the likelihood of an event and the

severity of the injury that may result

⦿Performance measurement › having measurable goals to track progress using

leading and lagging indicators

How to achieve safety

excellence?

Educate Ensure all involved are properly educated on safety while at work.

Standard Operating

Procedures

Design operating procedures that

consider all aspects of safety relating to

task..

Discipline

Enforce safety requirements with a penalty system and inspections.

Educate

⦿ Trainings (on-site and off)

› Trade based to help personnel better

understand the scope of safety for their job.

⦿ Toolbox meetings

› To update and inform personnel on daily safety

requirements.

⦿ Pre-Task Talks

› Job specific talks that highlight high risk

activities and hazards specific to the task.

Standard Operating

Procedure (SOP)

⦿ Incorporate good safety practice throughout

operating procedure.

⦿Design steps within SOP that factor in

safety requirements.

⦿ SOP should also consider the nature of

hazards for other works that may be

affected by the particular job.

Discipline

⦿Constant monitoring and checking of all

activities conducted to ensure correct

compliance.

⦿ Penalty systems to be implemented to

reprimand those who do not comply.

⦿Reward consistent good practice to promote

the importance of safety at work.

Safety adds VALUE!

⦿ Implementation of safety practices actually reduces cost. › Good housekeeping actually assists in material

management and reduces wastage which in the long run reduces cost.

› A clean and safe working area can help to increase productivity and speed up many tasks.

› Any accident or incident will result in a cost no matter how minor but good practice is free.

MATERIAL ARRANGEMENT

BAD PRACTICE GOOD PRACTICE

SAFETY IN PRACTICE

• All walk paths free from

materials and debris

• All open edges

barricaded and

completed with toe

boards and netting

• Proper access and

egress provided

PROMOTING SAFETY TO

A NEW GENERATION OF

EMPLOYEE

APPLYING NEW METHODS AND

IMPROVING OLD ONES TO ACHIEVE

A SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

UPDATING OLD

METHODS

⦿ Toolbox talks

› Conducted in a fun manner

› Updated topics which are relevant to younger

generation

› Use of props and media to deliver the talk in a

more interesting way

⦿ Site Walks (Hazard Hunt)

› Can be done as a competitive practice between

different departments

UPDATING OLD

METHODS

⦿Unsafe Act/ Unsafe Condition

› Competitive version can be implemented which

pits departments against each other.

› Develop score cards for each team/zone/group.

⦿ Safety Meetings

› Meetings can be made more interactive by

utilizing new presentation methods as well as

knowledge sharing.

NEW METHODS

⦿Use of social media to bring into focus

safety related matters and educate the new

generation on the importance of safety at

work.

⦿ Implementing systems that take advantage

of smart phones to further improve the way

information is shared to reduce response

time for safety matters.

SAFETY & HEALTH CHALLENGES Klang Valley MRT Project

(KVMRT)

CHALLENGES

Challenges include:

Restricted movement

Unguarded machinery

Exposed live wires

Hazardous materials

Pests such as ‘aedes’ threats

Dangerous temperatures

SAFETY PRACTICES IN KVMRT PROJECT

Strict periodic inspections of all machineries and equipment utilized. Heavy machineries are crossed checked by independent parties.

Good housekeeping.

Strict adherence to emergency response plan.

Strict adherence to requirements set by both MRTC and PDP.

Environmental and health control measures as per requirement by both DOE and KKM.

Compliance to international safety standards with respect to works conducted.

Constant improvement.

PERIODIC INSPECTIONS

EMERGENCY EVACUATION AND RESPONSE DRILLS

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE TRAINING

Summary

⦿ Safety should be fun and not a chore.

⦿ Always find ways to educate safety and

make everyone understand why safety is

important.

⦿Understanding why is more important then

doing something because you have to.

⦿ Safety has and always will be,

EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY.
