LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Gn 3:9-15, 20 o Hch 1:12-14; Sal 87 (86):1-3, 5-7; Jn 19:25-34 Martes: Sant 4:1-10; Sal 55 (54):7-11a, 23; Mc 9:30-37 Miércoles: Sant 4:13-17; Sal 49 (48):2-3, 6-11; Mc 9:38-40 Jueves: Sant 5:1-6; Sal 49 (48):14-20; Mc 9:41-50 Viernes: Sant 5:9-12; Sal 103 (102):1-4, 8-9, 11-12; Mc 10:1-12 Sábado: Sant 5:13-20; Sal 141 (140):1-3, 8; Mc 10:13- 16 Domingo: Dt 4:32-34, 39-40; Sal 33 (32):4-6, 9, 18-20, 22; Rom 8:14-17; Mt 28:16-20

Domingo: Domingo de Pentecostés Lunes: Séptima Semana del Tiempo Ordinario; Bienaventurada Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia Martes: Santa Rita de Casia Viernes: San Beda el Venerable; San Gregorio VII; Santa María Magdalena de Pazzi Sábado: San Felipe Neri

ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the ful-fillment of all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apos-tles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Galatians 5:16-25. Gospel — As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Re-ceive the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 15:26-27; 16:12-15.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 3:9-15, 20 or Acts 1:12-14; Ps 87:1-3, 5-7; Jn 19:25-34 Tuesday: Jas 4:1-10; Ps 55:7-11a, 23; Mk 9:30-37 Wednesday: Jas 4:13-17; Ps 49:2-3, 6-11; Mk 9:38-40 Thursday: Jas 5:1-6; Ps 49:14-20; Mk 9:41-50 Friday: Jas 5:9-12; Ps 103:1-4, 8-9, 11-12; Mk 10:1-12 Saturday: Jas 5:13-20; Ps 141:1-3, 8; Mk 10:13-16 Sunday: Dt 4:32-34, 39-40; Ps 33:4-6, 9, 18-20, 22; Rom 8:14-17; Mt 28:16-20

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connec-tion to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an “eye” in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the “birthday of the church.”

Pentecost Sunday BAPTISM AS THE ROOT OF VOCATION

On this great feast of Pentecost, when we celebrate the inrushing of the Holy Spirit, it is good for us to recall our own baptism. Baptism is at the foundation of each Chris-tian’s call, or vocation, to share in the ministry of Jesus Christ. For some, this means a response to the call to or-dained ministry. For the vast majority of us, our vocation is played out in life’s relationships and everyday situations. Our ordained leaders have the responsibility of inspiring us to do the work of building the reign of God in those places where our daily routines take us: school, work, the gym, the supermarket, the mall, our dinner tables, around the televi-sion, or at the computer. At our baptism, we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit. In confirmation, we were sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The power to share in the minis-try of Christ is planted within us. Let us be open to rediscov-ering the power of the Holy Spirit on this Pentecost and throughout the coming year.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Over the past seven weeks since Easter we have been celebrating, in joyful manner, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and recalling his many appearances to the apostles. As they recognized his presence, their hearts burned within them and they were filled with comfort, reassurance, inner peace and strength. Today is the feast of Pentecost which recalls the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles in the form of a roaring wind and tongues of fire. The first reading describes the spectacular baffling effect produced on the disciples by the coming of the Holy Spirit. The change in their lifestyle was startling, as the Spirit urged them to be their very best selves. They threw aside caution, were no longer afraid and rushed out to begin their mission of preaching the Good News, boldly proclaiming their faith in a crucified Christ. Suddenly there was no longer uncertainty, everything fell into place and made sense. At that moment the church was born. The spirit of God had filled the disci-ples with new hope and courage. They received the power and strength to set off into the world and enthusiastically continue the work which Christ had begun. The coming of the Spirit on that first day of Pentecost was not a once and for all event, but the beginning of his Permanent presence in the church. By virtue of our baptism, the Holy Spirit is closer to us than we dare imagine. Wher-ever there are hearts open to receive him, the Spirit of God is poured out, inspiring minds to undertake their mission as Christ's representatives. This feast brings home to us that God calls us to a deeper relationship with him and wants us to share in his life. It is an invitation to enkindle the fire of love and to stir up the grace of our baptismal calling. We do not always know when the Spirit moves us, yet we are frequently surprised by the power that drives us into ac-tion. When-ever we go beyond our own selfish indifference and reach out in genuine concern for people in trouble, then the Spirit of God is at work guiding us, giving us renewed strength to turn upside down accepted human values and the will to move along in a new direction.

The Holy Spirit In the Book of Isaiah 11:2-3, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are described. In the passage the gifts are considered ones that the Messiah would have possessed. Through Jesus, we also receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Wisdom helps us recognize the importance of others and the importance of keeping God cen-tral in our lives. Understanding is the ability to comprehend the meaning of God's message. Knowledge is the ability to think about and explore God's revelation, and also to recognize there are mysteries of faith beyond us. Counsel is the ability to see the best way to follow God's plan when we have choices that re-late to him. Fortitude is the courage to do what one knows is right. Piety helps us pray to God in true devotion. Fear of the Lord is the feeling of amazement before God, who is all-present, and whose friendship we do not want to lose. Courage, a Gift of the Holy Spirit The dictionary defines courage as the ability to confront fear in the face of pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Christians identify courage as the virtue of fortitude, which the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1808) says “enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecu-tions.”When Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke out for the poor of El Salvador, he knew he was putting his own life in danger, and he was strengthened by the courage that is a gift of the Holy Spirit. When Saint Isaac Jogues returned to the New World after having been tortured for 13 months by the Mohawk Indians, he knew he was returning to a life-threatening situation and he was strengthened by the courage that is a gift of the Holy Spirit. When Mrs. Augusta Gervay and Father Emilian Novak ran a workshop that produced baptismal certificates used to save the lives of Jews during the Holocaust, they were endan-gering their own lives and were strengthened by the courage that is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit reminds us; he reminds us of all that Jesus said. He is the living memory of the Church, and when he reminds us, he helps us understand the words of the Lord. This remembrance in the Spirit and by vir-tue of the Spirit . . . is an essential aspect of Christ’s presence within us and within his Church. The Spirit of truth and charity reminds us of all that Christ said and helps us enter ever more fully into the meaning of his words. We all have this experience: one moment, in any situation, there is an idea and then another connects with a passage from Scripture. . . . It is the Spirit who leads us to take this path: the path of the living memory of the Church. And he asks us for a response: the more generous our response, the more Jesus’ words become life within us, becoming attitudes, choices, actions, testimony. In essence the Spirit reminds us of the commandment of love and calls us to live it. A Christian without memory is not a true Christian but only halfway there: a man or woman, a prisoner of the moment, who doesn’t know how to treasure his or her history, doesn’t know how to read it and live it as salvation history. With the help of the Holy Spirit, however, we are able to interpret interior inspirations and life events in light of Jesus’ words. And thus within us grows the knowledge of memory, knowledge of the heart, which is a gift of the Spirit. May the Holy Spirit rekindle the Christian memory within all of us! And there, that day with the apostles, was Our Lady of Memory, who from the beginning meditated on all those things in her heart. Mary, our Mother, was there. May she help us on this path of memory.
