Nelumbo Nucifera – Padma, Kamala, Tamara - the sacred Lotus, represents spiritual elegance, perfect
beauty, serenity and grace. Hindu divinities are associated in various ways with a Lotus: seated on it,
holding it, compared to it. Vedanta speaks of being detached, like a Lotus and its leaves untouched by the
muddy water from where it grows. Pink Lotus is special for the worship of Vishnu and Lakshmi while white
Lotus is sacred for Saraswathi. Durga Bhagavathi yanthra is worshipped with dark red Lotus flowers.
Sloka To Lakshmi: Padmaanane Padma-Ooru Padma-Akshi Padma-Sambhave, Tvam Maam Bhajasva

Saraca Indica - the Asoka, Patkali is the flower of no-sorrow - even though Sita Devi spent her imprisonment
in Lanka under an Asoka tree. A different shrub like species of the tree with similar flowers is called Vrikshi,
Chethi or Tetchi. These beautiful scarlet flowers are particularly sacred to Durga, Ganesha and Shiva. The
Asoka flower has much use in pharmacopeia particularly for women’s ailments. Offering this flower to Shiva
on pradosha nights bestows much blessings. Sloka To Durga Devi: Neepa Asoka Sireesha Mukhya Kusumai

Nerium Oleander Indica - Karavira, Kanaer, Arali, Rakthakarabi, Ganneru, Haya-maaraka, a sacred flower
that blooms in various shades of pink, red and white often used for making temple garlands. The flowers
have medicinal uses to treat skin infections though the seed is highly poisonous. Cattle and goats do not
feed on it and hence it is planted along fences. It is particularly auspicious to offer Oleander garlands to
Navagrahas as they are said to solve all problems and bestow much fortune. Sri Lakshmi is said to dwell in
the Oleander flower. Sloka To Ganesha: Ekadantam Chatur Hastam Paasaankusa Dharinam

Mimusops Elengi known as Madhuganda Surabhi, Vakula, Bakula, Magizham, is a large shade giving tree,
often host to hordes of birds. The flowers are very small, brownish creamy with woody musk like scent. Since
the flowers retain their fragrance for many days after they fall from the tree, and its takes considerable
effort to thread them, they symbolize unwavering devotion when offered as garlands to Gods. Krishna plays
his flute under a Bakula tree on the banks of the Yamuna. Ayurveda uses all parts of the tree for dental
medicines. Sloka On Radhekrishna: Alikula Kusuma Samooha Niraakula Vakula Kalaapae Virahati Haririha

Do it with Flowers …….
Puja, a word of Tamil origin (Sanskrit: पूजा, Tamil: பூசெய்,) denotes offering
prayers and worship; it literally means, "do it with flowers" - the act of
welcome, devotion, reverence, adoration and complete surrender, leading
to oneness with God. The scent of flowers and other puja ingredients as well
as the sonorous recital of prayers create an inspiring spiritual ambience.
Poet Kalidasa’s works refer to many flowers that are offered to the Gods,
and that adorn the hair of beautiful women: kadamba, ketaki, malati,
yuthika, bakul, nilotpal, kutaj, mandara, parijata, champaka, and
harichandanam. All these flowers still bloom in India's towns and countryside.
In addition to these traditional flowers of our scriptures, roses brought by the
Moghuls from Persia, marigolds, brought by the Portuguese from the new
world, and chrysanthemums of the far east have now become integral for
making puja garlands. For those of us in the USA, roses, carnations, mums,
lilies, and pine branches have become delightful substitutes.

Times ruled by Rahu kaal, Yama ganda, Varjaya, Vishagatika, Dur muhurtha, Gulika, Mandi are avoided by some for auspicious events. The relative importance of these periods varies with family tradition.

Sankaranthi days and eclipse times are good times for performing Pujas; but are not good for weddings, gruha pravesha etc.
Tara Bala: Count from your birth nakshatra [being 1] to the nakshatra of the muhurtha day you are looking up. Avoid 1-3-5-7-10-12-14-16-19-21-23-25 nakshatra days for auspicious events; 7, 16, 25 is especially avoided [Naidhana.] Chandra Bala is important in muhurat for weddings, and other rituals. About the Dates in this Calendar
The schedule of events in this calendar is based on Panchanga or the Almanac calculated for the sunrise, longitude and latitude for South Jordan, Utah. Solar-lunar calendars of all regions and traditions of India were considered and timings were derived for Utah according to methods of eminent scholars and astrologers.
Ending times of Thithi and Nakshatra [Amavasya, Pournamasya and Stars] are geocentric phenomena – they occur at the same instant for any location on earth. Sometimes a Thithi can occur a calendar-day earlier in USA than in India. For example, a child is born on Monday at 6:00 pm in Utah. In India, it is already Tuesday morning. The child is born on Tuesday as per India time and on Monday as per USA time.
The Thithi or Hindu Day [T], Nakshatra or Star [N], Rashi [R] and Rahu Kala [RK] for each day are given in this calendar. Hindu Thithi can be shorter or longer than a 24hr English calendar Day. Hence, a day can have two Thithis; or a single Thithi may span several days.
Sankashtaharana chaturti, pradosha are determined by the prevailing Thithi at evening.
Vrat timings are based on sunrise at a location since the observance of the fast or prayer is usually from sunrise to sunset. Start of Hindu months are based on when the Sun enters a zodiac sign; if that time happens to be at nighttime, the event is observed after sunrise or on the next day.
Vedic years named Dhurmukha and Hevilamba overlay the English year 2017. These names are used for announcements during Hindu pujas and rituals as Samvatsara Nama.
The notations in this calendar are when the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple plans to observe these events; please consult your family elders and purohits for any personal schedule variations.
