THE ANNUAL CHARITY GALA DINNER – A SHORT HISTORY

The 10th Annual Charity Gala Dinner will be held this year. This event has become

a prestigious tradition for the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce in the Slovak Republic.

Every year the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce selects a unique project which supports

people in need. The aim of the Annual Charity Gala Dinner is to help raise awareness

regarding our Chamber as an entity which supports charity activities and provides help

where it is needed.

The Charity Gala Dinner tradition started in November 2005 and our Chamber has supported

projects in several regions of Slovakia.

In 2005, the Chamber gave SKK 77,000 (€ 2,556) to a hospital in Spišská Nová Ves for the

purchase of a volumetric pump and inhalator for the hospital’s children’s department.

In 2006, the proceeds from a raffle and auction, totalling SKK 106,300 (€ 3,529) were

donated to the Day Care Centre for Handicapped Children in Hnúšťa.

In 2007, the raffle and auction raised SKK 213,000 (€ 7,070) and the entire sum was given to

an Orthodox Catholic diocesan charity, the St. Anna’s project, which helps handicapped

children with socialisation, education and work.

In 2008, a total of SKK 405,700 (€ 13,467) was donated to the Barlička association based in

Prešov for the purchase of a training machine for differently-abled children and young

people.

In 2009, the Chamber donated a record amount raised from events – € 27 000 in total. The

money was donated to the Maják association from Zlaté Moravce and was used for their

special selective school project in Belušské Slatiny. This is a unique project for talented

children from difficult family environments.

In 2010, the Chamber donated € 16,000 to the NÁRUČ - Crisis Centre for Children in Need in

Žilina. NÁRUČ used this money to refurnish children’s rooms and reconstruct their building

and surrounding fence.

Two years ago, in 2011, the Chamber donated € 18,500 to Maják (Lighthouse) located in

Zdoba, Sady nad Torysou. This family-type shelter and school is the only place in Slovakia

where this special target group can receive basic education. This is a pilot project in Slovakia

which helps to bring new hope to the life of deaf and blind people. It is the first pilot project

of this type in the former post-communist countries of the CEE region. Maják used the

donated funds to reconstruct the premises and meet the general expenses of this project.

In 2012, the members and guests collected € 16,000 to support the Dlaň NGO from Lučenec.

This amount helped to cover the costs of the start up of the rehabilitation centre for social

and physical rehabilitation, which is of great importance for integration into the community.

Thanks to the auction, raffle and 2% assignment of income tax in 2013, members and invited

guests collected the outstanding amount of € 22,000 for Betánia NGO, Centre for Elderly

based in Bratislava.

ANNUAL CHARITY GALA DINNER 2014

On November 22, 2013, we will again welcome our members, Dutch and other international

companies based in Slovakia, and representatives of the Dutch community living in Slovakia

to the Annual Charity Gala Dinner.

In 2014, the Board of the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce decided to support the

Návrat NGO.

Návrat is a non-profit organization which advocates and supports the return of children from

institutional care into families. Over the last 20 years, Návrat has contributed significantly to

child care reforms in Slovakia – from institutional care to family-based alternatives.

Návrat believes that a stable family with loving parents is the only environment in which

children enjoy optimal conditions for healthy development. Návrat has placed over 1,000

children with substitute families.

Návrat’s vision is to use their expertise and practical skills to create a society in which:

• All children spend their childhood in families that are able to provide them with safety,

care and love.

• Abandoned children find a safe haven in families willing to take care of them.

• Social and psychological help is given to families with serious problems to prevent their

children from being deprived of basic needs.

Currently, more than 30 staff (social workers, special education teachers, psychologists) at 7

regional Návrat centres deliver comprehensive professional services in two areas: substitute

family care and services for at-risk families. Tens of professionals of various professions

provide services to Návrat as needed. Hundreds of people support Návrat’s mission by their

dedication and engagement.

We are very hopeful we will be able to collect a significant amount this year to support

Návrat’s mission.
