Nokia DM2 performs the functions of dynamically controllable primary multiplex equipment. DM2 has been designed for multiplexing analogue speech and signalling as well as data channels of different bit rates into a common 2 Mbit/s frame. DM2 can be used as a traditional PCM mux in subscriber and junction line networks, in corporate networks, as a one-way branching equipment in rural or private networks, as a pre-ISDN mux or for efficient data multiplexing. The heart of the equipment is a MUX unit which is common to all channel and special units of the DM2 system.

DM2/DM2+

DN2 dynamic node equipment provides an efficient three-in-one node for network flexibility and reliability. Part of the Nokia Dynanet family, it provides cross-connect functionality with drop/insert and multiplexing capabilities, supporting up to 40 x 2 Mbit/s interfaces.

DN2 is highly reliable due to its modular and decentralised design. The cross-connection functions are distributed. Furthermore, most of the DN2 units can be duplicated, thus the node can be configured flexibly to give the required level of redundancy and reliability. DN2 fully supports the implementation of loop and mesh networks.

DN2

Nokia DB2 performs branching equipment functions and can be controlled dynamically. DB2 offers a wide range of different branching and drop/insert functions. The DB2 branching equipment forms a 2 Mbit/s bi-directional branch to a main line signal. The branch and the main line signal have the same speed and frame structure. Individual channels are connected through or branched and the operation is completely digital. The DB2 branching equipment consists of two plug-in units for branching and a wide range of VF and data interface units for dropping and inserting individual channels.

DB2

Dynanet

Dynanet, a flexible product family for primary access networks forms the core of Nokia narrowband access product range together with Eksos N20 V5.2 access equipment, and network management equipment. The Nokia solution is cost effective and provides high flexibility and high reliability in the access network.

Flexibility is one of Nokia’s Dynanet competitive advantages in Nokia access product range. Due to modular product architecture and distributed power supplies node installations are economical both in small and large

configurations. The broad range of interface units, VF, data and ISDN interface units can be used in all Dynanet primary order multiplexers. Nokia access products are especially well suited for dedicated network solutions - branching and the support of many different digital and analog interfaces.

In networks that are changing over time Dynanet offers easy and fast adaptation. Dynacards permit this by adding new units and taking unused interfaces into use. Only those interfaces, which are needed, are

taken into use and unused interfaces may be taken in use later when needed.

The high reliability of Dynanet is achieved through a high level of integration, strict design rules and careful component control. The equipment mtbf values have been increased and field reliability statistics show actual reliability to be even higher than the pre-calculated values. If, nevertheless, a problem arises an effective real-time supervision system and built-in diagnostic features minimise the downtime.

Nokia’s higher order digital multiplex equipment multiplexes four tributary signals into the main system, and vice-versa. The digital multiplex equipment is developed for ITU-T PDH hierarchy level multiplexing and demultiplexing in different kind of networks, for example junction networks, dedicated networks for railways, gas, oil and power companies, corporate networks and networks for connecting mobile radio base stations. Nokia’s higher order multiplexing equipment can use any suitable transmission medium, such as radio links and optical fiber systems.

The change-over equipment is to provide an alternative transmission path in a case of a line failure. The protection is 1+1 all bit rates 2...34 Mbit/s and it is organized so that in the transmit direction, the change-over equipment sends the signal to two redundant transmission lines. In the receive direction, it selects one of the two incoming signals. The selection is based on the external control data received from the protected systems. The change-over function can be controlled either automatically or manually.

The miniDSLAM solution is a part of the Nokia total product offerings complementing the Nokia DSLAM product range. miniDSLAM is designed to meet the requirements for smaller sites. The compact assembly enables easy deployment of DSL services in the smaller sites like, Outdoor Cabinets, Indoor Cabinets, Small Exchanges on remote low density areas as well as FTTC (Fiber to the curb) applications.

With miniDSLAM solution operators can effectively extend the reach of DSL by moving the DSL interface closer to the end user. Shorter loop lengths increase signal strength and access speed at the customer CPE interface. This is essential with new high bandwidth services provided with ADSL2+ technology especially.

The miniDSLAM solution comprises a Master unit and Slave units both supporting 24 ADSL2+ ports. Master unit has one optical GigE interface for trunking and it serves as an aggregation device for up to six slave units, the maximum configuration serves 168 ADSL2+ lines including splitters.

Redback products are focussed on three main functionalities as follows: BRAS, Edge Router and Ethernet aggregation. Operators may use the same equipment for many different purposes including termination of DSL connections, deployment of VOIP, VoD and offering MPLS/VPN L2/L3 services with sophisticated QoS features for business customers. There are several interface types available for network connection.

The SmartEdgeTM 800Router is targeted at IP dedicated access services, as well as hosting and network based storage sites and backbone core applications. The product is distinguished by a number of features for providers focused on delivering highly available IP services today, and having total flexibility to support new IP services in the future.

Software modularity and process restartability The SmartEdge OS is highly modular to improve system reliability. Every protocol such as PPP, SNMP, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and RIP is implemented as a separate process. The Routing Information Base (RIB) and configuration UI are also separate processes. Failure of one process has no impact on any other process. For example, if a network event crashes BGP process it does not affect any other protocols and does not cause a system crash. If any process fails, it can simply be restarted without affecting any other process.

High-performance switching and programmable forwardingThe SmartEdge 800 platform employs a very high-performance packet mesh, whereby every card is interconnected to every other card. The packet mesh has 160 Gbps of switching capacity and is built with ASICs developed by Redback. All of the packet forwarding functions in the SmartEdge 800 are implemented with Redback’s specialized network processors, called Packet Processing ASICs (PPA). The SmartEdge 800 platform uses a dedicated PPA on every line card for input packet processing and another dedicated PPA on every line card for outgoing packet processing. With dedicated packet processors for incoming and outgoing traffic, the SmartEdge 800 platform can support high-performance forwarding, with a rich set of packet processing features (ACLs, rate limiting, etc.) turned on, both on the access side (toward the customer) and the backbone side. Since PPA is fully programmable, new services can be introduced simply by reprogramming them with right software code. Thus, PPAs offer investments protection along with ability to add new functionality with virtually no hardware swap.

Distributed forwarding Forwarding functions on the SmartEdge 800 platform are distributed on every line card and handled by the PPA. A failure of one line card has no impact whatsoever on packet forwarding for any other line card. Thus, there is no central point of failure for packet forwarding, even for specialized packet types.

Chassis: The SmartEdge 800 chassis has 14 slots with 2 slots dedicated to the controller cards and 12 slots available for a flexible combination of traffic cards. A separate area of the chassis has fans for forced-air cooling. The SmartEdge 800 chassis is designed for mounting in a standard 19- or 23-inch rack. All cards are installed at the front of the chassis. With the exception of the DS-3 and E3 traffic cards, the cards have port connectors on their front panels. Connectors for the DS-3 and E3 cards that are installed inslots 1 to 5 and 10 to 14 are located at the rear of the chassis.
