Alexandria Mills, a soft-spoken 18-year-old, was named the winner in Saturday night’s contest in south- ern China. The tall blonde was a relative surprise winner after spec- ulation focused on other contestants. Second place went to Emma Wareus of Botswana, and Adriana Vasini of Venezuela came third. The host country’s own contest- ant, Tang Xiao, also was among the final five. According to a brief biography on the Miss World website, Mills calls Louisville, Kentucky, her hometown, and she recently grad- uated from high school. She would like to become a teacher. “I’ve never met a stranger and enjoy meeting new people,” she says in the bio. For the final, she was wearing a shimmering ivory-colored dress slit up the leg. Soft-spoken Miss USA captures Miss World title By MIN LEE The Associated Press HONG KONG — A Gold- en Lion-winning Chinese director best known for portraying working-class struggles defended on Sat- urday his decision to try his hand at commercial cine- ma as he prepares to make his first kung fu epic. Jia Zhangke made his name with realist films that describe how China’s youth and workers cope with the country’s rapid economic growth. The 40-year-old filmmaker won the top prize at the 2006 Venice Film Festival with “Still Life,” a drama set against the destruction of a Chi- nese village to make way for the Three Gorges Dam. But now Jia, whose cred- its also include “Pickpocket, “The Plat- form” and “The World,” is getting ready to shoot a big-budget martial arts epic set at the beginning of the 20th century. The native of the north- ern city of Fenyang says the budget will be at least sev- eral million U.S. dollars — huge for the once under- ground director — and he will hire a Hong Kong fight choreographer. Veteran Hong Kong director John- nie To, best known for his stylish action thrillers, is his producer. Critics are wondering if Jia is abandoning his roots. It’s the same charge that was leveled at Jia’s prede- cessors like Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. Chen and Zhang won critical ac- claim in the West with stark stories of rural hardship but have gravitated toward commercial blockbusters in recent years. Jia told The Associated Press in Hong Kong on Sat- urday that his fans have nothing to worry about. “I will be back. I will not be making period movies forever. Old China is just one part of my imagination. The reality of modern Chi- na still attracts me a great deal. I want to prove over time that a director can en- joy a wide repertoire,” he said. The Chinese director, who was visiting Hong Kong to promote his docu- mentary “I Wish I Knew,” said he won’t follow the ca- reer paths of filmmakers like Chen and Zhang. “They have already taught us a very good les- son. Why would I want to take the same path? I have seen that that path is no fun,” he said. Jia said he will start shooting his new project, called “In the Qing Dy- nasty” in Chinese, in March or April in and near his hometown. The story fol- lows changes in a Chinese city after the abolishment of the imperial examina- tion system and growing Western influences. The cast is still being decided. Chinese director defends break from art-house By MICHAEL LIEDTKE The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO YouTube CEO Chad Hur- ley is surrendering the reins of the popular video website that he started with two buddies as a quirky curiosity and went on to groom into a media magnet that shows more than 2 billion clips a day. The change in command announced Friday formal- izes a transition that has been unfolding over the past two years as YouTube’s owner, Internet search leader Google Inc., asserted more control over the website. Google dispatched one of its longtime employees, Salar Kamangar, to help Hurley steer YouTube in 2008. That move signaled Google’s resolve to start making more money off its 2006 acquisition of YouTube for $1.76 billion. Kamangar’s expertise is in online advertising. Since his arrival at YouTube’s San Bruno headquarters, Kamangar had been running the day- to-day operations while Hurley concentrated on keeping the site’s steadily growing audience happy. Kamangar now official- ly assumes the CEO’s role while Hurley, 33, remains available as a part-time adviser. The transition will give Hurley, a designer, more time to devote to another of his business ideas, the men’s clothing line Hlaska. The brand’s name is a mash-up of Hawaii and Alaska, signifying its goal of becoming “the 51st state.” Although YouTube has been selling more ads and striking more business partnerships since Ka- mangar entered the picture, Google hasn’t said whether the site is prof- itable yet. The ads shown on YouTube are part of the roughly $625 million in revenue that Google got from so-called display ad- vertising during the three months ending in Septem- ber. That’s less than 10 percent of Google’s total revenue of $7.3 billion dur- ing the period. Google confirmed Hur- ley is stepping down after he disclosed his dimin- ished role Thursday night at an event in Ireland. The company also said it is losing the leader of a more recent acquisition, mobile ad service AdMob. Omar Hamoui, AdMob’s founder and CEO, quit for personal reasons, accord- ing to Google. His exit comes just five months af- ter Google paid $681 million for AdMob as part of is effort to sell more ad- vertising on mobile phones. YouTube’s two other co- founders, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, had already jumped ship. Karim left just a few months after the trio decided to set up a way to share their videos on- line. Chen, formerly YouTube’s chief technology officer, moved on in 2008. YouTube’s sale to Google enriched all three of the founders, who had met while working at the on- line payment service PayPal. Hurley raked in the biggest cut: 735,000 shares Google stock. Based on Google’s closing price of $613.70, those shares would now be worth about $450 million. Some television and movie studios contended YouTube built its early success by looking the oth- er way as video pirates swamped the website with copyrighted clips. Viacom Inc. even went so far as to file a lawsuit that alleged Hurley, Chen and Karim welcomed the pirated clips because they knew the material would help widen YouTube’s audi- ence.
