Hormones secreted by the pituitary...Hormone Function
prolactin - influences reproductive activities and parental care- development of mammary glands
growth hormone - stimulates cell division, protein synthesis, and bone growth in children/adolescents
- stimulates conversion of glycogen to glucose and fats to fatty acids- stimulates body to take up fatty acids and amino acids
thyroid-stimulating hormone
- stimulates thyroid gland to grow and secrete thyroid hormones
adrenocorticotropic hormone
- stimulates hormone secretion by cells in adrenal cortex
melanocyte-stimulating hormone
- darkens the skin
endorphins - inhibit perception of pain
oxytocin - stimulates release of milk from mammary glands- stimulates contraction of the uterus
calcitonin - lowers calcium concentration in the blood
thyroxine and triiodothyronine
- increases metabolic rate
parathyroid hormone - raises calcium concentration in the blood; stimulates vitamin D activation
Hormones secreted by the adrenal glands…Hormone Function
epinephrine - prepares the body for handling stress
norepinephrine - prepares the body for handling stress
Hormones secreted by the pineal gland…Hormone Function
