UB reaps major awards, 41 medals in national Taekwondo tourney

The University of Baguio captured major awards in the by-invitation-only 2011 SMART National Inter-School Kyorugi and Poomsae Taekwondo Championships on September 24 and 25 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

This year's medal reap--31 in all--is more than double last year's 14-medal tally from the elementary, secondary, and college divisions. UB's youngest taekwondo jins from the Laboratory Elementary School took home 11 medals in all--five silver and six bronze--in the Kyorugi competition, eventually winning first runner-up in both the Grade School Boys and Grade School Girls divisions.

The silver medalists are Randolf Gonzales, John Rembrant Juquiana, Yenyen Magalong, Timothy Castillo, and Elija Butac. Clyde Zachary Benzon, Irven Langaoen, John Manuel Raymundo, Joshua Pasag, Krizelle Therese Yadao, and Mary Ceniza Quiambao meanwhile brought home bronze medals each.

Not to be outdone are UB's high-flying jins who competed in the Kyorugi and Poomsae competitions in the secondary division, winning the chunk of UB's awards (eight gold medals, three silver medals, and eight bronze medals) and bringing home the Championship in Secondary Girls and Second Runner-up in the Secondary Boys division.

Carting away golds were Rencer Shane Lavestre, Keno Anthony Mendoza, Angelica Joyce Gaw, Ma. Shannelle Romuar, Suzzane Caslangen, Brighty Rio Salazar, Tiffany Delizo, and Daniel Sembrano. Silvers, meanwhile, went to Troy Cayago, Paola Rose Salazar, and Angelica Joyce Gaw, while Bronze medals were awarded to Derik Logan Caslangen, Pheobie Kate De Guzman, Tristan Cayago, Craemer Juris Quiambao, Cromwell King Quiambao, and Tiffany Delizo.

Cyndi Tumlayen, meanwhile, brought home a gold medal from Kyorugi under the college division.

The annual event pits the country's best Taekwondo institutions against one another. This year, about 1,500 young athletes from all over the Philippines joined.
