STRAWBERRY RIDGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

By: Sharon Hurley 315 9487

FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK

Once again Strawberry Ridge, along with your HOA will be scheduling tree trimming at a reduced cost to our residents. The HOA will be compiling a list of residents who would like to participate. The community will be done in phases starting with Choo Choo Lane on or around the 15th Of October. The cost will be $90.00 per tree and will include lifting off the home and over the street as well clean

up and removal. If your tree is on the lot line the cost should be shared equally between the home owners. Members of the HOA will be visiting your homes with more information.

LANDSCAPING: New homes will have landscaping installed at the time of installation of your home. You may not remove plants, shrubs or any other landscaping if you vacate the premises. You are encouraged to plant additional trees and shrubs. In order to prevent damage to underground utility lines, approval and supervision by Management is required when installing the same. The resident is responsible for the care and upkeep of his/her lawn and grounds. I recently had a visit from a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department deputy who informed me they are now offering a pro-gram to register golf cart serial numbers free of charge to anyone who would like to participate. This is a new program they have established due to the number of golf carts in the Hillsborough County area that have been stolen. Your HOA will be scheduling a time for the deputies to be on the property and help with the process. Stay tuned for further information!

Things are getting busy around here at Strawberry Ridge this month. Saturday morning, October 3 is our monthly free coffee and donuts at 9 AM at the Clubhouse. Join your friends and neighbors for a cup o’ joe and a sweet treat. That same morning (October 3rd) from 8:30 AM – 10 AM, Walgreens staff will

be at the Clubhouse for a flu clinic. You can get your flu and pneumonia vaccines right here at Strawberry Ridge without a doctor’s appointment. They are free for most of us, but bring your Medicare and insurance cards. Tuesday October 6, 2015 is a return visit to our Clubhouse from FLOW (Florida Licensing on Wheels) from 10 AM to 2 PM. This is a service that provides a convenient method to renew a driver license, obtain a replacement driver license, change a name or address on a driver license, get an identification card, renew a vehicle registration or purchase a spe-cialty license plate. The annual Trash to Treasure Sale is being held at the Clubhouse on Saturday, October 19th. Come find your bargains, things you just must have to have, and treasures from 9 AM – 1 PM. Hot dogs, chips, coffee and soda will be available for purchase.

And finally, don’t miss our legendary Halloween Party on Saturday, October 24th. Trish and Tony will be back again this year to entertain us and there will be prizes for best costumes in several categories. This has been a great party every year and we are once again expecting a crowd sharing a fun night. A decorated Clubhouse, good music, costumes and food and drink will guarantee a memorable evening. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the door from Jean DiBeneditto at 438-5166 or Rose Panella at 662-9852. In addition your HOA is partnering with Strawberry Ridge management to provide reasonable price tree trimming for res-idents who need to get trees away from roofs and off the street. Look for a hand delivered letter offering details. And last, again partnering with SR management and the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office, we are hoping to initiate a Golf Cart Theft Prevention and Registration project.

MAG JONGG

By: Carolyn Hamilton, 728-6399

October is here and the countdown for Christmas is on, waiting for lower temps, warm days and cooler nights.

I won first place with 17 games while Janella Moody and Sandy Pagano came in second with 14 games each. In third

place was Lorean Zionkofski, Mary Bergen, and Jean Springen with 10 games each.

Come learn this fun, old game—no money needed. If you play card games, this will come easy to you and we will teach

you to play. I never played this game until I moved to StrawBerry Ridge. It took me three months to win a game! I love

playing and using my brain to make hands.

HOSPICE FOOD DRIVE By: Sue Garno 412-2575

Our Lifepath Hospice has started a food bank for our clients who need some help before we can get them other resources in their area. I will be collecting food one time only (no spoilable food please) to be used for our Hospice patients on Wednesday, October 7th, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the front clubhouse before bingo starts. We will be outside in our white vehicle with the trunk open, and you can just drive by to drop off anything you care to contribute. We will also be supplying some of our families with Thanksgiving and Christmas food packages that they are badly in need of. If you do not wish to buy food, $10 gift cards for any major food store in Hillsborough County would be accepted also. Thank you in advance for the generous people who live in our park, they always step up when others are in need. All Hospice em-ployees and patients are very thankful for all that we do for them!

CAUGHT BEING GOOD

Many good things occur in Strawberry Ridge every single day. Most of these acts are unrecognized and appreciated by all but the individuals involved. This is the time and place to recognize these acts! Have you caught someone doing some-thing good or helpful to another that should be acknowledged? It need not be a really big thing, just something that is wor-thy of notice and appreciation. Please call or email any Homeowners Association Board member or email [email protected] with the name of the per-son and what they have done that is special. We will acknowledge them in this space.

A StrawBerry Ridge resident, who prefers to have their name withheld writes: “I sustained an injury last spring. I live alone and have no close contacts. I could not drive or walk for over three months. Wondering how I was going to manage, a StrawBerry Ridge resident, who I did not know well, ….. came to my door and asked if I needed help. The resident drove me to surgery, doctors’ appointments, shopping, and would come over just to chat. I was confined to a seated walker to get around. This resident would pull me backward in the store while I was seated in the walker at times when there were no motorized scooters in the store to use.”

This submission commends a very special person and resident. Thanks to all of the special people who live in our commu-nity!

BOOK REVIEW Here are a couple of reviews of books added to our library this month. Please use your Library—it’s free and Janet and Gwen work hard to keep it in terrific condition. Bob Burfitt, Editor

A Fright To The End by Dawn Eastman After their flight to Mexico is cancelled, Clyde and her detective boyfriend, Mac, end up snowed in with their families at a supposedly haunted hotel. Clyde’s tarot card reading mother, Rose, is making dire predictions for the weekend, and self-proclaimed pet psychic Aunt Vi is enchanted by the legend of the hotel’s ghost—until the power goes out and a body turns up. With a hotel full of stranded suspects, Clyde will have to draw on all her skills—both the police ones she’d rather for-get and the psychic ones she’d rather ignore—to solve the bone-chilling mystery before someone else gets iced…

Cell By Stephen King

The next call you take could be your last in this terrifying #1 New York Times bestseller by Stephen King. WHERE WERE YOU ON OCTOBER 1ST AT 3:03 P.M.?

Graphic artist Clay Riddell was in the heart of Boston on that brilliant autumn afternoon when hell was unleashed before his eyes. Without warning, carnage and chaos reigned. Ordinary people fell victim to the basest, most animalistic destruc-tion. And the apocalypse began with the ring of a cell phone..

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH & PATROL By: Lisa Stropes, Chairperson 684-9431

We will be having our annual National Night Out Event on October 6th. Last year we gave out over 300 free tickets asking folks to bring a side dish. We had around half show up and unfortunately ended up with a lot of extra food, most of which we were able to donate. This year our plan is to ask for a $2.00 donation for each ticket and ask folks to bring a dessert. We will provide everything else; hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes and drinks. Interested in joining the Neighborhood Watch and Patrol? We need some new folks to replace those that can no longer volunteer. Please contact me at any time if you have questions. We have acquired several Block Captains, but still need many more. Contact me if you have any questions or if you are interested in helping out; 813-966-5194 or [email protected]. Thank you to all the volunteers!

1. I'm the life of the party - even if it lasts until 8 pm.

2. I'm very good at opening childproof caps - with a hammer.

SHRA MEMBERSHIP By: Rose Panella Membership Chairperson 662-9862

Everyone who lives here is a member of the Homeowners Association but when it comes to voting, only those who are paid members have the right to vote in things such as by-law changes. As of this month, we now have a total of 135 paid members. It is painless to join. The cost to join is $6.00 for one year membership which breaks down to 50 cents per month. If you join for three years, the membership is $15.00 and comes to 42 cents per month. In either case, a new appli-cation must be completed. If you need an application you will find a folder outside of the HOA office with applications in it or you can give me a call and I will bring one to your home. Once you have completed the form, the form and money can be dropped in the slot in the HOA door in the event no one is there. I do go in and out of the office quite frequently and will get your form. Once I have it, I will type your new membership card and deliver it to your door. Come March 2016 we will be having a vote regarding the board members whose time is up. If anyone would like to run to be a board member, you can do so but you must be paid member of the association. Think about it.

GRAB A CHAIR & LET’S GET DOWN!!! By: Mariana Molero, Health and Fitness Director

Starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge as you get older. You may feel discouraged by ill-ness, ongoing health problems, or concerns about injuries or falls. Or, if you've never exercised before, you may not know where to begin. Or perhaps you think you're too old or frail, or that exercise is boring or simply not for you. While these may seem like good reasons to slow down and take it easy as you age, they're actually even better reasons to get moving. Exercise can energize your mood, relieve stress, help you manage symptoms of illness and pain, and im-prove your overall sense of well-being. In fact, exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, and healthy as you get old-er. And it can even be fun, too, especially if you find like-minded people to exercise with. Research has shown that regular exercise can protect cells in the brain and nerves from the injury or erosion that normally occurs with neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders like Alzheimer’s and MS (multiple sclerosis). In other words, this means that exercise can also minimize the risk of dementia. Also, exercising on a regular basis can also boost the immune system, a natural defense mechanism used to ward off foreign organism, viruses and chemicals. In our communi-ty we have several fitness classes to join and get the workout you need (at your own peace); pick the classes that fit you better and enjoy the benefits of a safe, fun & effective workout! During this month we have back to the fitness schedule “Sit & Be Fit” an absolutely fun & effective workout. The Sit & Be Fit program combines cardio, flexibility, strength and resistance training with different moves, while seating or using a chair for balance, pair of dumbbells, stretch band and a bouncy ball but, the most important is that you always workout at your own peace! I hope you get encouraged and give yourself the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of this amazing type of exercise. Also, whenever you want to create your own workout please schedule your appointment at the fitness center; I will be more

than glad to help you achieve your fitness goals. Mariana

WEDNESDAY SUPPER 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (or until it runs out)

By: Mary Phillips 654-7955

We hope everyone is enjoying the meals as much as we enjoy preparing them for you. As everyone has noticed prices of food, paper products, soda etc. has gone up. I have put off raising the price as long as I can. Starting in October we will have to charge $5.00 for each meal. I sure hope the new price won’t keep you from coming for a "fresh" home cooked meal. Remember everyone is welcome to come have a meal with you friends and neighbors. You don't have to play bingo to enjoy a meal with us. Hope to see you on Wednesdays. Any questions please call or see me. Mary Phillips

GUESS WHAT FOLKS……… IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE “THANKSGIVING TURKEYS”

By Barbara Phillips 681-5188

For those new residents here at the Ridge that might not know what this means, let me give you a brief summary . We started in 2011 collecting money from close friends so we could purchase turkeys to donate to Metropolitan Ministries to help feed the homeless, as well as those who had fallen on hard times. With the monies collected in 2011 we took them 20 turkeys, in 2012 it was 23 turkeys, in 2013 the number rose to 32 turkeys. Each of those years it was just a small group of folks that Irene Mack and I would ask if they wanted to participate and we didn’t even think of asking until mid November.

Then last year I decided to start earlier and put an article in our October Toppings. Needless to say there was an over-whelming outpour of generosity from our caring Strawberry Ridge residents and I collected $1601.00 and purchased 216 turkey birds which were delivered to Metropolitan Ministries on Palm Drive in Tampa. I DID NOT DO THIS ALONE……I had the help of those at the Ceramics Shop, the Bingo Group, the Line Dancing Group, Strawberry Ridge Management and countless individuals who believed in helping a good cause, who spurred me on and did not stop until I said….OK….it’s time to purchase the birds and make the delivery, because it was getting close to Thanksgiving Day. Well, it’s a new year and I am asking for your help once again. There is No donation that is too small for a good cause, we proved that last year. As in the past, all the receipts for the purchases as well as all delivery receipts from Metropolitan Ministries were posted on all bulletin boards, Clubhouse and Activity Center, to verify money spent and deliveries made, because it is only right that everyone should know where their money went.

Please help me, so just maybe by working together again, we can make this an even better year than the last. If you need any additional information, I can be reached at 681-5188 or at my home at 402 Silver Streak Lane. Thank you in advance for your help.

STRAWBERRY SINGERS

By Sylvia Haywood 436-0387 We have our first practice under our belts and things are looking very good for December 12, 2015, when the Strawberry Singers will present our Christmas Concert for your holiday enjoyment. Thanks to the several new members who have joined us for this year and hopefully years to come. Adding your voices to the mix will certainly have an impact on our sound. All of the songs presented are tried and true, well-known Christmas melodies and we know for sure that everyone who attends will have a great time listening and helping us welcome the joy-ous season of the Yuletide. See you all at rehearsals in the future weeks to come!

PROSPECTIVE PICKLEBALL PLAYERS

Barb Purvis 813-785-8040

We have many new residents who might not know we play pickleball in StrawBerry Ridge. We have a small group of dedi-cated players, who usually play only from October until April. Many of us leave for the summer, but you will see us playing again later in October when it is cooler and less rainy. We will be glad to see any new players. This a very casual group. No pro athletes involved! If you would like to learn this fun sport, please call me for an individual lesson (free, of course). We'll go over rules and some strategies, and you can get some practice in before our snowbirds are back.

BINGO Wednesdays at Clubhouse 7 PM. Tickets sold until 6:45 PM

The Homeowners Association has appointed a new chairperson for Bingo - Joe (Jay) Bledsoe. Joe has taken the Bingo reins to continue offering Bingo beginning on September 16, 2015. Jay is seeking folks who would like to help out in any capacity (calling, selling tickets, etc.) to keep all running smoothly. The first few weeks were fun evenings with a few laugh-able moments. The Homeowners Association would like to extend appreciation to Don Co Francesco and his assistants for all they did providing Bingo to residents for the past couple of years. Thanks, Don!
