10 TIPS FOR HEAVY EQUIPMENT STORING BATTERIESKnowing how to store heavy equipment batteries is critical to ensuring
the longevity and productivity of your products, especially when they
are the heavy-duty truck equipment kind. While batteries will of course
self-discharge over time, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to
ensure that you take proper care of them - maintaining battery life and
saving on costs over time. 10 TIPS FOR HEAVY EQUIPMENT STORING BATTERIES
STORAGE AND PACKING1. Always be sure to keep your batteries in a dry area, in an upright position.
2. Watch the temperature of your storage areas, as batteries subject to extreme hot or cold can have a reduced lifespan.
STORAGE AND PACKING 3. Never stack batteries on top of each other, unless
they have been packed in cartons or on pallets that
will protect them.
4. Always use the first-in, first-out rule of thumb in
stock rotation. This means the first battery to go into
storage should be the first one to come out,
minimising its dormant time.
TESTING AND CHARGING5. Measure the voltage of your battery and if it drops below 12.4 volts, make sure you charge it before use.
6. Always test the battery before installation, to save time and potential damage to your equipment if it's found to be working incorrectly.
7. Don’t overdo it; A battery that has not begun to accept minimum charging current within 15 minutes at the highest charger setting should be replaced.
SAFETY FIRST8. Follow health and safety regulations when charging batteries. Wear proper eye protection, and make sure that the battery is properly disconnected before hooking it up.
9. Watch out for warning signs; if the battery begins to leak or overheat, stop charging it immediately.
MAINTENANCE10. Know how to take care of your battery once it’s inside your machine. If you can do this, as well as the other tips in this article, you’re well on the way to having a battery that lives for many years.
