Engine Control Systems Limited is a C.A.R.B. verifi edmanufacturer of diesel emission control technologies.

Need to comply with C.A.R.B. rules? Not sure what to do? We can help!

ECS develops performance systems to meet numerous industries’ requirements for a variety of mobile and stationary equipment applications. Technology integration is the key to our ability to meet specifi ed demands on both a custom and cost-effective basis. Our exhaust emissions control systems are effective and fl exible, and can be confi gured to meet the needs of thousands of applications. We will work with you (or your fl eet manager) to best understand your needs and develop a custom solution for your operation. We are the difference between one-size-fi ts-all and a comfortable custom fi t!

Purifi lter & Purifi lter Plus. Our Level 3 verifi ed passive diesel particulate fi lter uses a silicon Carbide fi lter element which is formed in a honey comb design; alternating cells are open on one end and plugged at the outlet end. As the exhaust fl ow enters the open inlet cells, it is forced to pass through the micro-porous walls to the outer cells, fi ltering the diesel particulate matter from the exhaust. Exhaust temperature then helps burn off accumulated soot. Call us today at one of the locations listed below for more details.

RETIRED BRAKE MAN JERRY SALINAS REBUILDS A CLASSIC

A JERRYBILT ORIGINALFinding parts for older trucks is getting

harder every day, so when Jerry Salinas of Santa Clarita, California set out to rebuild his classic needle-nose Peterbilt, he ended up making most of the parts himself – so much so, that we joked about how his truck is more of a “Jerrybilt” than a Peterbilt! Looking to keep busy in his retirement from the heavy duty brake business, Jerry rebuilt this neat old Peterbilt from the ground up – and he did just about everything himself.

Born in Artesia, CA in 1944, Jerry Salinas (68) grew up on a hog farm with seven brothers and sisters. Back in those days, the areas around Los Angeles were filled with dairy farms and ranches, but as the people moved in and urban sprawl took over, most of the dairy farms moved to Chino and most of the hog farms moved to the Saugus/Newhall area (now Santa Clarita) north of Los Angeles. Many of the hog farmers moved to the Bouquet Canyon area, including Jerry’s family. After about a decade, feed became scarce, and most of the hog ranchers moved away or closed their farms. Jerry’s dad, named Plutarch (a name from the Bible), but known as “Tato” to most of his family and friends, quit being a rancher and became a truck driver for about ten years. After that, he took a job at the Eternal Valley Cemetery in Newhall, where he worked for almost 25 years before retiring. Jerry’s mom, Elsie, passed away

at an early age from heart problems and his dad died in 2003 at the age of 77.

The reason that the hog feed became scarce is an interesting story in itself. Prior to the 1960s, most of the people in Los Angeles were required to separate their food waste from their regular garbage. The food scraps were then put into special buckets, provided by the city, and individuals and businesses would put those buckets out on the curb to be picked up. After collecting this waste – up to 100 tons a day – the city would then sell it to the local farmers to feed their livestock. At first, it was just raw waste, but as the fear of disease was realized, the city began “cooking” the scraps before selling them to the farmers. But, once the garbage disposal was invented and fully-utilized in most homes and businesses, these scraps quickly disappeared, so the city stopped collecting the waste.

After graduating from high school in 1962, Jerry went to work at West End Auto Wrecking in Newhall. When growing up, Jerry helped his dad fix and rebuild their cars, so wrenching on things was in his blood. At that first job, his main duty was to cut-up cars and tear wrecks apart for parts and scrap. He did that for about six months, and then went to work for Dave Dutro at his local transmission repair shop. Working there for five years, Jerry got to do all sorts of engine

and transmission work. One day Jerry asked for a pay raise, but Dave denied him, so he quit and left in 1967. After that, Jerry got a great job at Commercial Brake Service in Sun Valley, CA.

At that time, Commercial Brake Service was a nationally-known heavy duty brake shop that was well-respected in the trucking community. Ken Allen was the shop foreman that hired Jerry to make deliveries and chase down parts. After one day of training, Jerry was unleashed out into the big city of Los Angeles. Not knowing the streets at all, he found himself pretty lost – he did not like it. So, when one of the guys in the shop got hurt, Jerry took advantage of the new opening and started working in the shop, relining and cleaning old brake shoes. He did that for about a year and then moved into the service bay, where he worked on truck brakes.

At some point, Ken left Commercial Brake Service and opened his own shop, Ken’s Brake Service, just down the street in Pacoima, CA. When Ken left Commercial Brake Service, Jerry took over as the shop foreman. For years, Ken stayed in contact with Jerry, and always tried to convince him to quit and come work with him. After working at Commercial Brake Service for about six years, Jerry finally took Ken up on the offer in 1974. Jerry really enjoyed working with Ken, and the two of them were a great team for 17 years. When Ken decided to retire in 1991, Jerry bought a bunch of his equipment, tools and inventory, and then opened his own small shop, Jerry’s Brake Service, also in Pacoima, CA.

Although Jerry’s shop was small and, for the most part, he was a one-man show, he was

Page 11: 10-4 Magazine - February 2013

known for his quality work and he had a great reputation in the industry. Jerry wasn’t cheap, but he always did the job right, so his business flourished. During this time, he bought several rental properties around his area, and, thinking ahead, the 1963 Peterbilt 281 seen here. Jerry always wanted a truck, so when he found this little gem he bought it, figuring that it would be a great project to keep him busy after he retired.

After 16 years, Jerry decided to close his shop and retire in 2007. Having constructed a modest workshop behind one of his rentals in Sylmar, Jerry moved his smaller machines and his Peterbilt to this shop – which would eventually become his home away from home. It took him about a year to completely close his operation and move everything out, but once he did, he went to work on the truck, which took over two years to rebuild and restore.

When Jerry bought the old needle-nose in 2000, it had been sitting for six months, but the rig’s 335 Cummins engine fired right up and he was able to drive it home. Painted light gray with a black stripe, this truck pulled a set of pneumatic trailers, hauling bulk cement for Tobi Transport, for most of its life. Besides cleaning it all up, Jerry did not have to do anything to the truck’s drivetrain, which includes the original two-stick transmission with a 4-speed main and 4-speed auxiliary setup. When Jerry started stripping the truck down, he found about fifteen coats of paint on it, but once it was all torn apart and stripped to the bare metal, the rebuild could begin.

To update the truck’s single exhaust with a set of dual five-inch pipes, Jerry had to install an air cleaner on the driver’s side. To accommodate the new intake, Jerry had to modify the truck’s butterfly hood, and then he hand-built his own intake tubes. He also moved the truck’s single fuel tank (on the passenger side) back behind the cab and then installed a battery box under the

passenger door. Jerry then mounted a second 50-gallon fuel tank on the driver’s side to make both sides the same. To smooth out the bumps, Jerry added an air-ride system to the suspension. Rewiring everything, Jerry moved the batteries to the passenger-side box so they would be closer to the starter. The original steel fenders were pretty banged-up, so Jerry replaced them with a better set that he found on another 1963 Pete. Once all of the “dirty work” was finally done, Jerry shifted his focus to the paint and chrome.

With all of the chassis work now complete, Jerry brought in his friend Cesar, who had never painted a truck before, to spray the Garnet Red paint right there in his shop. Once the truck was

painted, Jerry installed all of the accessories and lights. Finding it difficult to find all of the parts he wanted, he ended up making a bunch of stuff on his own, including the exhaust brackets, the rear light bar and mud-flap brackets, covers for his leaf-springs and hanger brackets, the deck plate, the visor for the rear window, the air-line connection box and more. Using chrome-plated aluminum for almost everything, Jerry also made custom tank covers, complete with billet-style fuel filler caps built right into the covers!

Wanting to install a lot of lights, Jerry made his own light bars/brackets for the air cleaners, mirrors, battery boxes, stacks, deck plate, frame, tank covers, front bumper, rear light bar, bottom

of grill, under the cab, and probably a few other places we missed. The truck has over 200 small, old-style incandescent marker lights (no LEDs), but they have been mounted so nicely and evenly, you can hardly tell – except at night, of course!

Moving to the cab’s interior, after gutting it all out, Jerry installed a better dash from another 1963 Peterbilt, cleaned up all of the old gauges, replaced the driver’s seat (the passenger seat is still the original), and had the door panels and headliner reupholstered with new black leather. Jerry then added a new steering wheel, covered the steering column with chrome tubing, and made custom chrome kick panels for under the dash. The interior is nothing too fancy, but it looks great and is very functional.

The truck made its debut at the Truckin’ For Kids Show in Irwindale, CA in October of 2010. At that show, our mutual friend and past

cover trucker (April 1999) Ken Weiland, brought Jerry’s truck to our attention, and we ended up honoring it with our “Sponsor’s Choice” award. Since then, the truck has been to several local shows and parades, and earned many trophies. Jerry wanted to thank Cesar for the great paint work, and we would like to thank Ken for making sure that Jerry’s little 281 did not go un-noticed. Since he built the truck for fun and to keep him busy in retirement, he is thinking about installing a hitch receiver to the back so he can hook a travel trailer up behind it and use it for vacations and to attend truck shows further from home.

Married for just three years when he was young, Jerry has twin boys, Larry and Gary (48), and another son, Tony (42) from a relationship after he was divorced. One of his boys works for the CHP as an inspector at the Castaic scales, one is an electrician, and the other is a masonry

worker and mechanic. Jerry loves the freedom of being single, but admits that he was “married” to his work for most of his life. Jerry was never afraid to work hard, and the fruits of his labor are now being realized. A little advice Jerry wanted to pass on: if you have a dream, don’t put it off or wait until “later” to do it. By the time “later” comes around, you may be too old (or dead) to do that thing you put off your whole life. In short, he said, “Don’t live with regrets.”

Keeping busy with his truck and side-jobs here and there, Jerry is enjoying his retirement from the truck brake business – but here is an ironic fact – his Peterbilt has no front brakes! Back in the old days, they were not required, so a lot of companies just removed them. Jerry plans to add front brakes to his truck, but for now, his “Jerrybilt” original has none. To that, we say, “Come on Jerry, give it a brake!”

MUFFLERS & MOREOur new engineering center is now up and running at Pittsburgh

Power, along with the Taylor Chassis Dynamometer, and we now have some interesting fi ndings about the DD5 Detroit. We have been repairing these engines for quite some time now and the results have been phenomenal – engine failures have been zero with fuel mileage increases of about 1 mpg. Now, here is what is interesting. A stock 515-hp DD5 produces 515 hp using 39 psi of turbo boost, but once we tune this engine and upgrade the exhaust manifold, turbocharger and muffl er, the DD5 produces 705 hp to the fl ywheel and 600 to the ground using only 38 lbs. of turbo boost. This engine is producing 190 additional horsepower using 1 lb. less boost! This just goes to show what a diesel engine will do if it is allowed to breathe. One of the best engines ever (as far as producing the most horsepower per pound of turbo boost) was the Caterpillar 425-B, which made 19.3 hp per pound of boost. This 14.1 liter Detroit ranks right up there (once it can breathe) at 18.55, versus the stock confi guration at only 13.20. That is more than a 40% improvement. This horsepower number of 705 has been a great setting for all of the owner operators we have been working with. Keep in mind that almost all of these professionals were more concerned with obtaining fuel mileage over power, and they made this very clear to us right from the start. Their satisfaction goes to show how insuffi cient stock horsepower settings and parts are for today’s applications. However, if you are concerned about making these changes to your truck because you have a hired driver behind the wheel, we can also hold this engine back for you. Here is some good news for owners of trucks equipped with a C-12 Caterpillar under the hood. Wayne and Darrell Zeller, brothers from Canada, both have C-12 Cats and both love running them with their Pittsburgh Power Performance Computers. Many truckers with stock 550 C-15 Caterpillars have met their demise on the mountains of western Canada to these brothers. After one such pull involving some chatting on the CB, the owner of the stock C-15 pulled into the truck stop and, seeing Wayne’s 2000 Peterbilt 379, wanted to further investigate what had taken place on the hill. Parking alongside him, Wayne opened his hood and proved that he was telling the truth about having a C-12. As his victim walked away, trying not to scratch his head in public, Wayne thought to himself that maybe he should have told him about the powerbox... or, maybe not!

A couple months ago, Wayne decided to install our ported and ceramic-coated exhaust manifold and larger performance turbo on his C-12. He and Darrell were amazed at the difference these items made. Wayne now runs the powerbox on level 3 instead of 4. He said that the engine produces 10 lbs. more boost on level 3 than it did before on level 4, and that his exhaust gas temperatures have dropped from 1050 to 840 degrees. Well, just this morning, we received Darrell’s exhaust manifold in the mail. Being that he had replaced it only a few months ago, he decided to have us use his manifold rather than buy a brand new one from Caterpillar to have it ported and ceramic-coated like his brother’s. When Darrell’s manifold is ready to go, he is also going to have us send him the high-performance turbo, too. Very soon, there are going to be two very hungry “little” Cats prowling the mountains of western Canada. Maybe the owners of those stock C-15 Cats should call us for some upgrades before they are eaten – again! Here is an interesting story about muffl ers. Many times, a person will not want to change their muffl er(s) until they rust apart and are ready to fall off the truck. Recently, we had a 2007 Western Star with a DD5 in the shop for a conversion and the owner felt the muffl ers were okay. However, to allow the engine to breathe properly, I insisted that the free-fl ow quiet performance muffl ers be installed. Once we removed the muffl er, which looked just fi ne on the outside, we could tell it was rusted out, so we cut a window in the side of it. As you can see in the picture, we were shocked at what we found. The muffl er didn’t look too bad from the outside, but the top section of the internal pipe was rusted through and was lying sideways across the incoming pipe, blocking almost all of the exhaust fl ow. People almost never remove their stacks to make sure that their muffl er is okay. By replacing a stock muffl er with a quiet, performance muffl er, you will gain at least 1/4 mpg, which generally translates to saving 1,000 gallons of fuel for every 100,000 miles driven. This also greatly reduces the amount of soot in the engine’s oil, along with the iron (FE) particles, which are responsible for most of the wear on an engine. So, even if your muffl ers look good on the outside, do not automatically assume that they are good on the inside, too. Don’t forget about our annual Owner Operator Snowmobile Conference – not only is it tax-deductible, but it is also a tremendous amount of fun! We are meeting February 28th at the Flying Saddle Resort in Alpine, WY. Their phone number is (307) 733-3333, and the price of the room is just $69 if you mention that you are with our event. Bring your own snowmobile or rent one in town. By the time this event comes to an end on March 3rd, you will have 25 new friends (the camaraderie is second-to-none). Just think of what it’s like to be sitting on an 800cc snowmobile at the bottom of a mountain with 24 other owner operators. Look out, mountain – here we come!

The Spirit of the American Trucker Seeing this old SuperLiner takes me back to when I went on a little trip to Reno with an 82-year-old trucker who was still driving. He told me stories about how he started driving in the 50’s when every road in California went through the middle of every town, and if his truck ever broke down, there were always some good local people who would let him use the phone or sleep at their house until his truck was fixed. Boy, those were the days! This old guy was an owner operator for most of his life and his wife never had to work – she was able to stay home and raise the kids. That old man was so proud of what his 60-year driving career had provided for his family – and in my mind, he was the true definition of the slogan, “Built like a Mack truck!”

OLD PETERBILT BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE

Weird & Wonderful Old Time Trucks

By Photographers and Writers John & Shirley Sponholtz

Joseph A. Pane of Moscow, PA is not a truck driver, but he loves old trucks. He found this 1974 Peterbilt 359 in Reillyville, NY, where the truck had been sitting at the home of its owner, Larry Hopkins. When Joseph bought it, the Peterbilt had a day cab and was painted turquoise and white. Joseph had his work cut out for him and started in on the sandblasting, but had the rest of the body work, including its new paint job, finished at a body shop. He bought a sleeper and installed it himself, then, with some help from his friends, completed the restoration. The Peterbilt has a 350 Cummins SB with a 13-speed transmission and Rockwell rears. The restoration included the interior of the cab, which now has an oak floor, and the interior of the sleeper, which now has oak walls and an oak ceiling. Joseph is a general contractor who thinks old trucks are great, and he is glad that he had the opportunity to bring this classic Peterbilt back to its former glory (maybe even better)!

Troy’s Treasures Page 34

BY COLORADO CORRESPONDENT TROY MILLER

Although this cool truck is called “Counterfeit” by its owner and builder, there is nothing fake about it – it is the real deal. A truck is what you make it, and Gary Disher of Hi-Plains Leasing in Commerce City, Colorado knows this. First gaining notoriety on the truck show circuit for his bright red, one-of-a-kind “Gone Postal” cabover MR Mack, Gary has put together yet another stand-out rig from similarly humble beginnings. Being a former dirt-hauling truck, the two-tone green stub-nosed 1990 W900B Kenworth seen here is now an integral part of the Hi-Plains heavy-haul fl eet. Starting life in a local dump truck fl eet, Gary’s “Counterfeit” Kenworth has certainly come a country mile (and then some) since he fi rst got it. Originally painted dark-green with white stripes, the rig featured a plywood frame cover, rusted air-cleaners, steel wheels, hardly any chrome, and little in the way of shine at all. Yet, Gary new underneath the

years of dirt work, scratches, cracks, and acidized aluminum that there was a truck waiting to be built, so he got to work. Needing to keep it working during the entire rebuild, almost all of the work on the truck, excluding the paint, was done in-house at the Hi-Plains shop. Work was done a little at a time on the truck. Originally outfi tted with a frame-top, painted hydraulic tank for the wet kit, Gary changed the wet line tank to a polished, saddle-mount tank, as well as pushing the passenger-side fuel tank back from its position under the cab to behind the cab, adding a tool box to balance out the look of the truck. The plywood deck cover was replaced with a proper aluminum cover and the ribbed half-fenders were fi rst swapped out for polished half-fenders, eventually ending up with the deep-radius stainless steel rear fenders you see on it now. The truck would go on to get a stainless steel drop visor, a stainless steel boxed-end

front bumper, 6-inch miter-cut exhaust tips, polished and smooth exhaust pipe heat shields, polished elbows, and the necessary accessory for any heavy-haul truck, a headache rack. With the original paint fading and cracked, it was time to get the truck repainted, as well. As Gary had much of the equipment on the truck now that he wanted, he had the truck sent to Juan Maldonado at MG Auto Detail for new paint. Wanting to keep the old-school Seminole paint scheme on the truck, Gary opted to have the truck sprayed

NOTHING FAKE HERE

Page 35: 10-4 Magazine - February 2013

Troy’s Treasures Page 35

with a two-tone forest green and pale, near mint green scheme with gold outline stripes. Gary also had the frame painted to match, as well as the headache rack, the fuel and hydraulic tanks, and the air cleaners. Nearly complete now, the truck was sent to Auto Weave of Denver, Colorado to have it’s interior reupholstered in matching trim and color while ColoGraphic, Inc. produced the Western-looking vinyl lettering for the truck. The interior would also receive new chrome gauges and switch covers, while the original, old-style three-spoke Kenworth steering wheel was refinished and refurbished. During all of this work, Gary still had the Kenworth out and working, as well – and this truck certainly has the guts to get some work done. Outfitted with an XT-generation 444 Big Cam Cummins that Gary’s turned up to over 500 hp, the mechanically-powered KW features a 6-speed main box and 4-speed deep-under auxiliary transmission, routed through 4.56 rear gears on air-ride, with 24.5 tall rubber all the way around. In fact, one of the first loads Gary’s W900B hooked to after he bought it was an 800-series Hitachi excavator, grossing some 200,000 lbs. in the mountains! The old mechanical Cummins, turned-up and running hot, picked the load up and got it to its destination with ease. Primarily handling heavy-haul services, Gary Disher started Hi-Plains Leasing, Inc. in 1989. Based out of Commerce City, Colorado, Gary has built the company into what it is today.

With equipment to handle the smallest skid-steer on up to 100,000-lb. loads and more, Hi-Plains Leasing has become a premier heavy-hauling and equipment hauling outfit in the Rocky Mountain region. With eight trucks, as well as three lease-operators, and trailers ranging from flatbeds and step-decks, to lowboys with capacities up to 75 tons, Gary has the equipment to get the job done. With a knack for the unusual or impossible, Hi-Plains Leasing, Inc. has earned a reputation as a go-to operation for the loads that nobody else can haul. In fact, millions of people drive right underneath one of Gary’s most notable loads – a pedestrian bridge-arch that spans the entirety of I-25 between Speer Boulevard and 20th Street in Denver, Colorado. Gary hauled the entire arch in as a single piece. Weighing about 200,000 lbs., the load was over 30’ wide, 50’ tall, and more than 300’ long!

Gary would like to thank Auto Weave Upholstery of Denver, as well as Juan Maldonado of MG Auto Detail, the Light House for providing much of the illumination for the truck, and his many drivers and employees for not only their service at Hi-Plains Leasing, but also for helping him build the truck. Gary would also like to thank Bob Ewing for his mechanical work on the truck, and most of all, his wife of 28 years, Sandy, for, at a minimum, tolerating his truck habit. Some build cars, others do landscaping, but Gary builds (and drives) big trucks. Having seen his fair share of the industry, if Gary isn’t in the office bidding jobs, in the shop tinkering on trucks and trailers, or out hauling a load, he enjoys taking things easy with his wife and spending time with his grandkids. We at 10-4 Magazine would like to thank Gary and his crew at Hi-Plains Leasing for their time in making sure the truck was ready for the photo shoot. It can be difficult to find the time to shut a working truck down and get it ready for a photo shoot, and we appreciate the effort that goes into preparing these trucks. We were impressed with Gary’s first truck we featured (the “Gone Postal” Mack), and his latest “Counterfeit” Kenworth, is just as impressive – and in regards to work trucks, it’s the real deal. There is nothing fake about this classic rig. With an unusual taste in trucks, we are certain this won’t be the last truck Gary Disher will build, and we are looking forward to seeing what his slightly-twisted eye comes up with next time.

Ask The Law Page 37TM

Questions about Lane Laws, Driver Testing, Overweight Tickets & More Answered by Law Enforcement Officials (as of February 2013)

Brought to you as a public service by Ol’ Blue, USA and 10-4 Magazine. Submit

your questions to www.askthelaw.org

CALIFORNIA LANE LAWSQ: I recently received a citation for not moving right on a three-lane interstate after passing two semis. I informed the officer that the only reason I didn’t move right was the right lane ended in 5/10ths of a mile. What is the legal distance you can merge left when the right lane is ending? Thank You – Ron in ArizonaA: Provided by Ofc. Jaime Nunez, California Highway Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Section, Sacramento, California: California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 22348(c) requires truck and trailer combinations to travel in the right lane on highways with only three lanes in each direction. Section 22348(c) CVC permits a driver to overtake and pass another vehicle proceeding in the same direction by using the lane to the immediate left. Once the vehicle has been passed, a driver must move back to the right. There is no statutory exemption for traveling in the left lane after the pass is completed. On highways with four or more lanes in each direction, truck and trailer combinations must travel and pass each other only within the two right-hand lanes. A black and white regulatory sign with the words “TRUCKS OK” placed above a freeway lane does allow trucks to travel in that specific lane.

LOGGING DROP & HOOK INFOQ: When making trailer changes, do you need to log “drop & hook” and include the trailer information on the flag for time, location and unit numbers in the logbook? Thanks – Joao in FloridaA: Provided by Sgt. Pete Camm (Ret.), California Highway Patrol, Sacramento, California: I cannot find any regulation or interpretation that requires a driver to mark trailer numbers on a flag in the logbook. Regulations do not require entries to be made in logbooks regarding drop and hooks, fueling, required inspections, loading, etc., however, many motor carriers do. Since there is another portion of the logbook to record a trailer number(s), I don’t remember seeing a trailer number flagged on any of the thousands of logbook pages I’ve reviewed. That said, a driver shall complete a Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) for every vehicle operated during a shift. Therefore, when a driver drops a trailer, a post trip inspection must be completed (396.11a).

Two trailers are allowed to be listed on a DVIR, but the trailer being picked up is not required to be entered on the DVIR until the end of the shift. Needless to say, a pre-trip inspection shall be completed on the trailer being “hooked” to. 396.11 Interpretations, Question 13: Must a DVIR carried on a power unit during operation cover both the power unit and trailer being operated at the time? Guidance: No. The DVIR must cover the power unit being operated at the time. The trailer identified on the report may represent one from the preceding trip.

CERTIFICATION OF DRIVING SKILLSQ: Is there a requirement in the FMCSA rules for an annual driver re-certification for driving skills? Thanks – Len in WisconsinA: Provided by Senior Trooper Monty Dial (Ret.), Texas Highway Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Garland, Texas: If you are asking a question about the Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) for drivers who cannot qualify for a DOT Medical Certificate due to a missing limb, the requirements for the driver and motor carrier can be found in Part 391.49. As for how long the SPE is good for, the maximum is 2 years, and then the driver and motor carrier can re-apply 30 days prior to the expiration of a current SPE – see 391.49(h).

OVERWEIGHT CITATIONSQ: can you be cited for being overweight from the use of a weigh in motion scale and not being weighed on a static scale? Thanks for your time – Brian in WashingtonA: Provided by Jim Brokaw, formerly a Staff Sergeant with Nebraska State Patrol, Carrier Enforcement Division, Lincoln, Nebraska: I wish I could give you a definite answer, but I can’t. How truck weight limits are enforced are determined by the individual state’s laws, not by any federal regulation. So, if a state’s laws or regulations permit weights determined by a weigh in motion scale to be used for enforcement purposes, then it would be possible to be cited for overweight without being weighed on a static scale. However, from what I’ve been able to find, similar to Nebraska, most states use their weigh in motion systems to pre-weigh and presort trucks prior to the weigh station. Only those trucks potentially overweight are directed to the static scale, and if any enforcement action needs to be taken, it would be based on the weights determined from the static scale.

Clint’s Creations Page 39

This month’s cool “creation” was built for Shawn & Penny Brownfield of Macomb, Illinois. A fun couple to get to know, the Brownfields built this glider truck from a donor Kenworth that Shawn had owned and operated for ten years. Not wanting to overdue anything on the truck (or their checkbook), they kept the build simple and clean, doing “just enough” to make it cool. Shawn (38) is a third generation trucker who grew up hearing all of the stories. He also rode around with his dad and uncle Mark a lot. Shawn’s dad, Eddie, pulled just about everything, including a pig wagon, regular dry van freight, a convertible hopper and hazardous waste, just to name a few. Growing up, Shawn idolized his dad and thought trucks were the coolest, but his dad told him to stay away from those dirty trucks. After graduating from high school, Shawn spent two years in the Navy, and then he got a job at UPS unloading trucks. Later, he took a job at the local Dixie Truck Stop, picking up the parking lot, and the trucks just kept sucking him in. Merely by accident, he landed a wrenching job at the nearby Freightliner dealer, and then spent three years there, working as a mechanic. But as hard as Shawn tried to stay away from trucks and trucking, he eventually gave in. At 28 years old, he bought his first truck – the 1999 Kenworth W900L AeroCab “donor” truck seen here. He drove that truck for ten years, until buying the new glider kit Peterbilt 389 also seen

here. He and Penny, who just got married two years ago, talked to the bank about making some modifications to the Kenworth, but the numbers just didn’t add up. They decided, instead, to buy a new glider kit from Clint and then use the good drivetrain from the old Kenworth. Clint ordered the new truck with no engine, transmission, or rear-ends. Featuring a split paint job with white on top and burgundy on the bottom (and frame), the truck had nothing fancy at all on it when it was delivered. After the guys in the Service Department (Charlie, Andy and Kipp) tore down the KW and completed the heart and soul transplant of the Cat 550 and 18-speed transmission into the Peterbilt, Shawn & Penny had the Body Shop do a few add-ons. Trying not to overspend or overdue things right from the start, Shawn & Penny are planning to do more things to the truck as they go – it is a true work-in-progress. Some of the things they did have done at the dealership included adding one of Clint’s painted visors, installing Fibertech body drop panels, swapping out the stock headlights with 359-style double-rounds, and chopping the air cleaner lids. They also had the tanks painted, a black breaker stripe added, and installed a set of used rear quarter-fenders, just to get them by for now. After the Kenworth was dismantled, Shawn & Penny decided to donate the old carcass to the Vo-Tech Diesel School in Atchison, Kansas, so the

JUST ENOUGHTHE LATEST PROJECT FROM CLINT MOORE

kids could use it as a bench truck. This couple, in fact, does a lot of charity work. After Penny’s mom died at an early age from breast cancer, she and her brother started a charity called “Linda’s Fund” which hosts golf tournaments and other events throughout the year to raise money for local breast cancer patients in their area. Most of the money raised is used to buy the often overlooked items that people need, like wigs, gas money, toiletries, and other essentials. Although Shawn & Penny have not been married for very long, these two act like they have been together forever. During the build, they came down to the dealership one weekend and things will never be the same! In addition to Shawn getting a huge Peterbilt logo tattooed across his entire back, they also went to a Chief’s football game, where they somehow got the chance to meet country music star Eric Church. Needless to say, it was a wild weekend. Pulling an end dump right now, Shawn is excited about his new ride. The self-proclaimed “Meathead” also has a 13-year-old daughter from a previous relationship named Daytona, and says that Penny’s dad, Rodger, is his one-man fan club. Wanting a simple truck that makes a big statement, Shawn & Penny both agree that this Peterbilt is “Just Enough” – the perfect balance of classy and ghetto – just like them!

Words of Wisdom From SharLeigh

February is Black History Month. Frederick Douglass was an outstanding abolitionist, writer, orator and statesman. By the description of this man, you might think that he was raised a freeman from a well-to-do family, educated at the finest schools – you would be wrong. This brave soul was born into slavery in February of 1818 (he never knew the exact date of his birth) and grew up on a Maryland plantation where he experienced the wretched, miserable, humiliating life of a slave. His family members were slaves except for his father – it was rumored that his father was a white master. His mother was torn away from him when he was an infant and his grandmother took care of him until the age of six, when he was taken away from her, as well. At the age of 8, he was trained as a houseboy and sent to another owner. The mistress of the house taught him the alphabet but was ordered to stop by her husband because it was against the law to teach a slave to read. But Frederick Douglass was tenacious – whenever he

could, he took instructions from others and learned to read and write. By the time he was 12 years old, he fully realized the power of the written word. At 15, he was hired out to another slave owner and became a field hand, and on Sundays he taught the other slaves to read the Bible. Seeing this, the slave owner became worried and sold Mr. Douglass to a slave breaker – a very mean man that used the whip more than mercy. He whipped the 16-year-old regularly, trying to break his spirit. Mr. Douglass was eventually able to run away – he dressed as a sailor and used the papers of another black sailor and boarded a train, leaving the South (and slavery) behind forever. He described his first day of freedom as escaping from a den of lions. As a free man, he became a voice for inequality, anti-slavery and all human rights. He was encouraged by William Lloyd Garrison to become a speaker for the anti-slavery movement. His books and writings were positive thoughts to the equality of all people. He traveled and served under President Lincoln and President Grant. “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free,” became a famous quote that defined his life.

Editor’s Choice Page 60

BY DANIEL J. LINSS & BRYAN WELSH

It takes a special kind of person to be a good truck driver – someone who is tough and tenacious, but also patient and respectful – like a lion. In the jungle, the lions rule, and out on the highway, it is much the same. Those who were taught properly survive and thrive, while those who were not, just drive and drive, never really getting anywhere. Leon Murillo is a lion, and not just because his name translates into “lion” in Spanish, but because he has that tough, tenacious, respectful spirit in his heart. Leon Murillo Jr. (23) of Porterville, California always knew he wanted to be a truck driver, just like his father, Leon Murillo Sr. Losing his mother at an early age, Leon was raised by his father in the seat of a truck, learning to drive at just nine or ten years old. Leon can remember sitting in his dad’s lap, steering the truck, and whenever he began to drift out of the lane he was in, his dad would fl ick one of his ears, right or left, depending on which way he wanted him to move back toward the center of the lane. By the time he was eleven, much to the surprise of the other drivers around, young Leon was already backing his dad’s truck into the docks at his deliveries. After graduating from high school, he immediately took his driving test, earned his CDL, and then hit

the road. At only 23 years of age, Leon already has about 600,000 miles under his belt, and counting. Leon’s dad bought the 1999 short hood Peterbilt 379 you see here in 2004, when Leon Jr. was still a sophomore in high school. At that time, Leon’s dad was driving a 1996 Freightliner FLD, so he hired a driver and put him in the Freightliner, and then Leon Sr. began driving the Peterbilt. Once Leon Jr. graduated from high school and got his license, he bought the Peterbilt from his dad, became an owner operator, and then started hauling for his dad’s company, Leon Murillo Trucking (Leon Sr. went back to driving his FLD). At one point, Leon Sr. was running six trucks, but that did not last long – all of the headaches and hassles wore him out pretty fast. Because of that, Leon Jr. says he is happy with having just one truck and one driver (himself) – he has no interest in growing any larger than that. When Leon Sr. bought the Peterbilt it was outfi tted with an aerodynamic package, with all sorts of fairings and covers, and the dual exhaust was located behind the 70-inch Ultra sleeper. Today, all of that stuff has been removed, and now the seven-inch Dynafl ex exhaust is located on the sides, like it should be.

Powered by a turned-up 3406-E Cat (from 475 to 550) hooked to a Super-10 transmission, this black beauty also has a painted drop visor, a custom-built and painted rear light bar, polished aluminum half-fenders, and HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights. The truck originally had fi ve old-school glass clearance lights, but one day the center light burned out. Leon liked the way it looked, so he just removed the center light from the center cluster, which left four, evenly-spaced cab lights, which he painted black. He also added four glass lights in front of the breatherson each side to match the four cab lights up on the roof. The fi nal touch was removing the stock Peterbilt emblem on the front of the truck and replacing it with a small, black, metal Transformer’s “Autobots” emblem (Leon is one of the good guys – no “Decepticon” here). Dragging behind Leon’s truck is a 2003 Great Dane 48-foot reefer trailer. Originally equipped with sliding tandem axles, Leon later bought a fi xed 10-foot spread-axle setup and swapped it out. He then moved the fuel tank to the back, mounting it between the spread, like the old-timers used to do. The trailer features quilted stainless rear doors, LED lights and two sets of polished quarter fenders. Leon would like to have the trailer’s rails and rear-door hardware painted black to match the truck, but for now, it still looks pretty damn good. Hauling all sorts of refrigerated produce, like oranges, carrots, apples, pears, lettuce and celery, Leon ran all over

California, which nearly drove him nuts (he couldn’t wait to run out of state). Once he turned 21, he started running I-5, between California and Washington, exclusively. Occasionally he ventures out to Texas for a change of scenery, but for the most part, he stays on I-5 out west. That is where he met our writer and photographer, Bryan Welsh. The two passed each other often on I-5 and eventually became friends. Today, they talk often and meet for breakfast when they can. Bryan took these pictures one day out in a field near the Kenworth dealer in Coburg, Oregon, just north of Eugene (thanks Bryan – great job). Running hard keeps Leon pretty busy, but even when he’s not getting paid to drive, he still likes to jump into his pickup and take road trips. He recently got engaged to his fiancé, Ginger, who is currently attending Fresno State University. Studying to be an interior designer, the two decided to wait until she is finished with school (in 2015) to

get married. Still living in Porterville, Leon likes living in the country and has no interest in leaving – plus, all of his loads are always nearby! Leon Sr. still trucks, too, and recently bought a 2008 Freightliner Cascadia. He also still has his old FLD, and currently has a driver in it (Leon Sr. really likes his Freightliners, whereas Leon Jr. is a Peterbilt man).

With almost 1.6 million miles on the odometer, Leon’s Peterbilt is still going strong. He wanted to thank A&L Chrome Shop in Tulare, CA for taking such good care of him and his truck, and Bryan Welsh for not only noticing his sweet ride from across the interstate, but for taking the pictures and passing them on to us at the magazine. Leon is very excited to be in 10-4, as he has been picking up and reading the magazine for as long as he can remember. We at 10-4 would like to thank Leon Murillo, both of them, father and son, for being the kind of people that keep this industry going. And at only 23 years old, young Leon has plenty of time to grow and influence the even younger drivers around him, to help keep those old traditions alive and well. Without old-school truckers like you, with the heart of a lion beating deep in your chest, the steering wheel holders would take over and all would be lost – and we just can’t let that happen!

DON'T MAKE IT WORSE THAN IT HAS TO BE & DON'T WAIT UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE...

START GETTING READY FOR TAX SEASON NOW

Page 63

IN THE BEGINNING. Have you been trucking since 1912 or earlier? If so, you are a true pioneer with an amazing fi tness regimen, and you once earned an income without having to pay the Internal Revenue Service a dime! That’s right. It wasn’t until 1913 that income tax was made a permanent hassle by the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. That means that 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the IRS. This reminds me that I have an actual Form 1040 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return from 1938 showing the person (not me) paying a total of $4.74 on a total income of $1,266.12 to the IRS. Boy, those were the days! That person paid way less than 1%. Not any more!! John Murrill, an NTA-endorsed CPA, states that this year, thanks to the recent “fi scal cliff” legislation, “A new top rate of 39.6% (up from 35%) will be imposed on the individuals reporting taxable income of more than $400,000, or $425,000 for head of household and $450,000 for married fi ling joint returns.” While this is not the time you will celebrate with cake and gifts, it is a good idea to devote some time and effort to your relationship with this federal monster, because forgetting an anniversary with your signifi cant other may seem like a cakewalk compared to the tax man! To keep your trucking business running smoothly and the tax man away, it is critical to prepare for tax season. Let’s take a look at a few tips to get your trucking business ready for this tedious but necessary part of running a business.

KEEP GOOD RECORDS. Whether you are planning to fi le your taxes yourself or hire a professional, the most important fi rst step you can take is to get yourself organized and know what you need to keep and what you can throw away. It is important to maintain the right records to keep the tax man off your back. These include receipts, invoices and bank statements. One good way to stay organized is to simply get a box of envelopes at the local truck stop and start putting every receipt for that month into one envelope that you label January (or whichever month you are in). Another way is to buy fi le folders at any local offi ce supply store such as Staples or Offi ce Depot. These fi le folders will let any

trucker put receipts for each category, such as fuel or food, into one folder for each month. This way, you or your hired tax preparer can quickly understand what expenses were incurred in which week or month.

TAX RATES. CPA John Murrill wants to remind everyone that the 2% Social Security reduction has been eliminated. Also, the maximum capital gains tax will rise from 15% to 20% for individuals who are in the 39.6% tax bracket, depending on your fi ling status and taxable income levels.

TRACKING PAYMENTS. If you paid anyone for any work last year, that person was most likely a subcontractor, and if you’ve given work to a subcontractor you must keep track of those payments. For payments to a subcontractor that were more than $600, he or she must complete a W-9 and return it to you. It is simple enough to be fi lled out at a long stoplight, but you may wish to advise your subcontractor not to fi ll it out until they are safely pulled over! Have a subcontractor complete this form if you suspect he or she will be paid at least $600 during the year. For example, if you typically subcontract several thousand dollars worth of work every August to cover for a vacation, have each worker fi ll out this form on the front-end, just in case you lose touch with them later on.

DEDUCTIONS. There are countless tax deductions that small business owners such as you can take advantage of. A tax deduction is an expense, something you paid for during the year to run your business. This expense gets subtracted from your taxable income and is called a tax deduction. The less taxable income you have, the less tax you pay. Neglecting to take advantage of all your legal tax deductions means you are paying too much in taxes, so be sure to use all of the available deductions you have. Your tax professional should be able to fi nd all available items to deduct and keep more money in your wallet. John Murrill added that the following Business Tax Provisions should not be missed, such as the 15-year depreciation and Section 179 expensingallowed on qualifi ed real property through 2013, both the Work Opportunity Credit and

bonus depreciation (which have both been extended through 2013), and especially the Section 179 deduction limitation, that is now up to $500,000 for 2012 and 2013. Truckers should pay special attention to Section 179 as this is very important to small businesses such as owner operators. On the personal side, the enhanced Earned Income Tax Credit, the $1,000 Child Tax Credit, and the enhanced American Opportunity Tax Credit have all been extended through 2017.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. If this all sounds Greek to you, then maybe you should consider hiring a tax professional. As an owner operator, you are used to doing almost everything yourself, but unless you are very adept at tax preparation, Uncle Sam may become an uninvited guest in your life! So, it pays to hire a professional. “There are well over 72,000 pages in the IRS tax code,” says John Murrill. “While nobody has memorized every tax law, a professional can help make sense of your taxes and get them right the fi rst time.” The NTA has two CPAs and a Bookkeeper with IRS experience to help you with your taxes. Call today (800-805-0040) or visit their website (www.ntassoc.com).

IN CONCLUSION. Taxes are perhaps the most complicated part of your life (if they aren’t, it would be interesting to know what kind of life you live). Given the complexity of this issue, it will be worthwhile to start thinking about your taxes early (for next year, too) and begin considering what you need to focus on in order to have your trucking business ready for this tax season, and beyond. Keeping thorough records, educating yourself about possible deductions, and reaching out for professional advice, if needed, can help you avoid being the next IRS punching bag. By doing so, you’ll be prepared for tax season and make it go as smoothly as possible.

BY WRITER & DRIVER KIM GRIMM

The last time I wrote about a famous coastal highway, it was the road that headed up the eastern coast. This month, I want to take you on a journey down the left coast. Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is a 1,700-mile route that travels along the western coast of the United States, tracing the coastal areas of Washington, Oregon, and California. A combination of US Route 101 and California’s Highway 1, PCH may be one of the most scenic drives in the world as it takes you through lush parks, redwood forests, rugged coastline, and hundreds of quaint and historic towns and beaches along the way. Last time we went from south to north, so this time we will follow the route from north to south.

Our journey along the Pacific Ocean starts inland, in Olympia, Washington, where US Route 101 begins. At first, the highway heads north, toward the lumber town of Shelton, located on one of the southernmost inlets of Puget Sound. A little over 100 miles into the trip north, you will roll into Sequim, WA. From there, the road begins heading west along the northern edge of Olympic National Park. Nearly reaching the most northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, the road finally turns south and heads down the coast. Traveling through Washington, there are not many landmarks – but there are a lot of small logging towns and trees.

Once you hit the Columbia River and cross the 14-mile-long Astoria-Megler Bridge, you will find yourself in Astoria, Oregon. Founded just after the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1811, Astoria is known for its architecture and historic sites. As the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, there are more historical points of interest here than any other place on the Oregon Coast. One of those points

of interest is the famous (and odd) Astoria Column – a concrete and steel tower overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River on Coxcomb Hill. The 125-foot tall tower was built in 1926 and has a spiral staircase inside that ascends to an incredible observation deck.

Heading south from Astoria, US Route 101 hugs the Oregon coast for the entire length of the state. Along the way, you will find all sorts of beach towns, bridges, parks, scenic turnouts and historical markers. Our first stop is the Fort Clatsop National Memorial, the site where the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805-06 (a replica of the original fort is there now). A little further south you will find Cannon Beach, where a cannon washed ashore in 1846 after a Navy schooner was wrecked. There is a replica of the cannon and a historical marker just south of town, but you can find the original at the Heritage Museum in Cannon Beach.

Devil’s Churn, just south of the seaside town of Yachats, is a photographer’s dream. This ocean inlet was created over thousands of years as waves carved into the rocky shoreline, forming a sea cave whose roof eventually collapsed. As the tide comes in, it can throw water spray several hundred feet into the air when the waves reach the end of the churn. Not far from there, you will find the Sea Lion Caves, a tourist stop where you can pay to take an elevator deep down the ocean cliff wall into a cave to observe hundreds of sea lions hanging out. It is a pretty cool place, but one word of caution – it really stinks down there!

Just a few minutes south of Florence is Honeyman State Park. Open year-round, this park has three Lakes and extensive campingfacilities. Adjoining the park, the Oregon Dunes

are a unique area of windswept sand that is the result of millions of years of wind, sun, and rain erosion. These are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America, and they provide numerous recreational opportunities including off-road vehicle use, hiking, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping.

The Cape Blanco Lighthouse (see photo), built in 1870, is located at the westernmost point in Oregon. Near the lighthouse, you will also find the Victorian-style Patrick Hughes House, which was built in 1898. The hard-working Hughes family operated a 2,000-acre dairy here, and their beautiful home has marvelous views of the lighthouse. A little further south, you can see dinosaurs at the Prehistoric Gardens in Port Orford. For 40 years, sculptor E.V. Nelson built dinosaurs, then later decided to make it a tourist destination. His 23 life-sized dino replicas are “scientifically correct” but it is their unique coloring that you will remember.

After crossing the border into California and passing through Crescent City, you will find yourself amongst the majestic Redwoods (see photo). This beautiful area includes Redwood National Park and California’s Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks. Covering 133,000 acres, the four parks, together, protect 45% of the remaining coastal redwood old-growth forests (these are the tallest trees on Earth). In addition to the redwood forests, the parks also feature vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild river ways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline. I’ve only been there once, but it was well worth the trip. If it’s not already on your bucket list of places to visit, I would add it, for sure.

Continuing south on US Route 101, after passing through Eureka and more redwoods, you come to the small town of Leggett. Here, we will exit US Route 101 and begin traveling on Highway 1, which is a scenic 225-mile portion of

A CRUISE DOWN PCH

Trucker Talk Page 79

the road that takes you along the coast through Fort Bragg, Anchor Bay, and Bodega Bay before reaching the Golden Gate Bridge. Crossing the bridge into San Francisco and then continuing south on Highway 1, you’ll find some of the most beautiful homes along this part of the route.

Traveling along the coastline south of San Francisco, you will eventually find yourself in Santa Cruz. This surfer town sits at the top of Monterey Bay and features, among other things, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk – a classic seaside amusement park with over 34 rides and attractions, including two National Historic Landmarks: the 1924 “Giant Dipper” wooden roller coaster and the 1911 Looff Carousel. Driving south around the bay, you pass through the old town of Seaside (founded in 1887) and then end up in the city of Monterey, which is home to the amazing and educational Monterey Bay Aquarium. Once you pass through Monterey, the road gets really interesting.

South of Monterey, en route to San Luis Obispo through Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon and Cambria, is a 135-mile stretch of what is arguably one of the most picturesque coastlines in the United States (see photo). Make sure your gas tank is full and be prepared, because that piece of PCH could take you the better part of a day to complete if you stop and take a lot of pictures and enjoy all the sights along the way. Construction on this segment of the highway began in 1919. Utilizing prison labor from San Quentin Prison, inmates were paid 35 cents a day and had their sentences reduced for their hard work along the Big Sur coastline. In San Simeon,

high up in the Santa Lucia Mountains, the huge 115-room Hearst Castle overlooks the ocean. Construction of the mansion began in 1919, the same year as Highway 1, and ironically, it cost as much to build as the highway. With the aid of New Deal funds, the paved two-lane road was completed 18 years later in 1937. In 1965, the section of the road along the Big Sur coast was declared the first State Scenic Highway.

One of the most photographed landmarks along this portion of the highway is the Bixby Creek Bridge near Big Sur (see photo). The iconic bridge, with its two towers below the roadway and a concrete arch spanning between them over the canyon, was built under budget for just $200,000 in 1932. At the time, it was the longest concrete arch span (320 feet) on any road in California. Today, after a $20 million seismic retrofit in 2000, it is still one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world.

Once you arrive in San Luis Obispo, you merge back on to US Route 101 and continueon through Pismo Beach, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, and then Ventura. In Oxnard, you

again exit the 101 and get back on Highway 1. From there, you travel south along the coast to Malibu, where many actors, musicians, athletes and business executives live in beautiful beach houses. During the 1932 Summer Olympics, this segment of Highway 1 also hosted part of the road cycling events. This portion of the road is also famous for mudslides, which sometimes cause parts of the road to be closed for months at a time, but road crews work quickly to clear the busy route as soon as possible.

Once you get through Malibu, things get very busy and congested as you arrive in Santa Monica and then continue south through all of the popular beach communities in Los Angeles like Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach. After that, you get to Long Beach, home of the permanently-docked Queen Mary ship. Once the grandest ocean liner in the world, the Queen Mary is now a full-service hotel, historical landmark, and entertainment venue. The Queen Mary gives visitors a unique glimpse into a bygone era when steamships were the most regal way to travel.

Continuing south, you cross into Orange County and pass through the popular beach towns of Huntington Beach (the home of 10-4 Magazine), Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach. Originally built around 1888, Hotel Laguna was the first hotel and substantial business building in Laguna Beach. It is picturesque, romantic, and has quite an intriguing past. In 1928, the hotel was demolished on speculation that its bat and board construction was a fire hazard. The new building, which was dedicated in 1930, is the hotel that still stands today.

As we end our 1,700-mile journey in Dana Point, California, Highway 1 comes to an end at Interstate 5. From there, you can continue along the coast down through San Diego and on to the Mexican border, but most people would not consider I-5 as part of PCH. Years ago, it was common for adventurous travelers to hitchhike the route, but I would not recommend doing that today. But those who did it back then, probably have some great stories to tell. Because of its twists, turns, hills, and gorgeous scenery, PCH is also one of the most desirable routes in the United States for motorcyclists to ride.

Even if you can’t make it to the west coast to take a trip up or down this scenic route, I urge you to do a search on the internet of the places mentioned in this article and enjoy the pictures and stories you find of this unique and beautiful highway. And, if you are lucky enough to one day take a cruise up or down Pacific Coast Highway, be sure to slow down, savor the scenery, and stop to take lots of pictures!

We are saddened to report that Richard Wallace, our past cover trucker from back in October of 2001, has died. At the young age of just 58, cancer took his life on August 22, 2012. Having not kept in touch with Richard over the years, we were made aware of his passing by one of his former drivers and friend, Tom Macias of Corona, CA. Born in Tennessee in 1954, Richard and his family moved to Riverside, CA not long after he was born. Working as a contractor for almost 20 years until the economy crashed in the late 1980s, Richard went on to be a mechanic, a tow truck driver, and then a dump truck driver in Southern California. When we met Richard and put him on our cover, he was driving the 1976 Kenworth conventional seen here. Powered by a Big Cam Cummins 400, Richard built this truck himself - it was in pretty bad shape when he bought it. Painted Lavender Metallic at Tom’s Truck Painting in Fontana, CA, the Kenworth then went to Absolutely Custom Paintwerx in Anaheim to get Metallic Green fl ames. Back then, Richard and his wife Penny, along with several other drivers, were pulling bottom dumps, hauling sand and gravel out of Corona and taking it to a concrete plant in Irvine. Not long after being on our cover,

Richard and Penny got fed up with having so many trucks and drivers, and decided to sell it all, except for their two trucks, and let all of the drivers go. At that time, Tom Macias, who had just started driving for Richard, was wondering what he was going to do. Wanting to help Tom out, Richard sold him one of their trucks without any money down and told Tom that he did not need to make his fi rst payment for three months. This allowed Tom to get started and make some money, before he had to make a payment. To this day, Tom is forever grateful to Richard for helping him to get started in trucking. After running the bottom dumps for a few years, Richard and Penny later switched over to running transfers for a while. But, again, the economy started to fade, and the couple found themselves selling their transfers and buying a slick 2005 Peterbilt 379 Extended Hood with a 70-inch double bunk sleeper and hitting the road together as a team. Pulling a step-deck, the two hauled all sorts of freight, all over the country, for almost fi ve years. Growing up with eight siblings, Richard had family all over the country, so wherever they were trucking, they always had someone to visit. Having family in California, Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Arizona,

PAST COVER TRUCKER PASSES AWAYIN MEMORY OF RICHARD WALLACE 1954-2012

Minnesota, New Mexico and Montana, they had a lot of “family reunions” out there. When Richard wasn’t trucking or playing around with his Harley, he loved to go fi shing on the Mississippi River and in the Bayous around Louisiana whenever they had a layover. In May of 2012, after feeling sick for a day or two and complaining of a backache for a few weeks after changing the brakes on Penny’s car, he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer. Three short months later, on August 22, he was gone. Penny and the rest of the family had a memorial service at their home in Perris, CA. Richard’s body was cremated. Richard was not afraid of dying, but he was sad that he was going to pass away so soon and leave so many loved ones behind. Richard is survived by his wife, Penny, four sons, three grandchildren, four sisters, three brothers, and countless others. Richard had a lot of friends and was highly-respected by his peers. People like Tom Macias, and many others, looked up to him as a father-fi gure, and he helped them whenever and however he could. Richard and Penny were together for 28 years, and married for 18 of them. The old KW was sold a few years after being on our cover, and has not been seen for a while. Presently, Penny is pondering her future and trying to sell the Peterbilt. We are proud to have had Richard Wallace and his truck on our cover, and send our thoughts and prayers out to the entire family.

DON’T BE A VICTIM

By Trevor Hardwick

In February we observe Valentine’s Day. It’s a day for couples to really emphasize their lovey dovey feelings for each other, or perhaps have a little courage and reveal a crush. Sadly, though, there are those who aren’t really feeling loved by their signi cant other – they are being belittled and abused by someone who claimed to love them once upon a time. And whether its verbal or physical abuse that’s being rendered, it’s still abuse, plain and simple. There is no excuse for it. How on earth could someone turn so disrespectful and at-out violent toward someone they love? The fact is, in many abusive relationships, the man is the victim, but most are the other way around – men who are being controlling, physically abusive, belittling, or even neglecting their wives or girlfriends as a way of manipulating them or dominating them. It’s disgusting. There is help available, however, not only for the victims of such abuse, but for the aggressors, too. If you are on either side of an abusive relationship, I earnestly encourage you to seek help. To quote Scripture, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, reminds us that “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; love is not arrogant or rude; it does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things.” This means that when you truly love someone, always seek what’s best for that person, above yourself. Abusing them is not a symptom of love. This month, I wrote a non-trucking-related poem to reach out to those who are victims of abuse. If you’re the victim, don’t convince yourself that it’s your fault or that you deserve it. If you are the aggressor, STOP NOW! Think about this person you fell in love with, and if the love is gone, just move on – and get help before it gets even worse.

SEE HER NOW!

If you could see her then…The way she looked at him…Her heart was lled with joy,The day she met that boy.

She set her spirit free…And did it willfully…She gave herself to him,Oh, if you could see her then!

If you could see her then…You’d see her reckless grin…You’d hear her speak of him,So glad she let him in.

You’d see a little girl…Whose heart was set awhirl…A glow upon her skin, Oh, if you could see her then!

But something changed in him,The love was growing dim.His hands of love turned erce,Her heart was quickly pierced.

His words became too strong,And all the love was gone.He pushed her down one day,And then she ew away.

If you could see her now…She hides her face somehow…A victim of assault,She thinks it’s all her fault.

Her eyes are lled with tears…Her heart is full of fears…Her smile looks like a frown,Oh, if you could see her now!

If you could see her now…With bruises, black and brown…Long sleeves and denim jeans,You know what that stu means. There’s clearly no excuse…For in icting that abuse…The damage lingers on, Long after scars are gone.

In her mind, the words remain,In her heart, she feels the pain. But you’ll see, she won’t stay down,Oh, if you could see her now!
