    India on 1 November won a crucial election to the UN Board of Auditors with itsnominee Shashi Kant Sharma, the Comptroller and Auditor General, garnering thelargest number of votes.Sharma won 124 votes out of the total 186 cast in the General

    Assemblys Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary questions.India won by acomfortable margin against its closest contender the Philippines, which got 62votes.Having obtained the required majority and the largest number of votes, ShashiKant Sharma will be appointed to the UN Board of Auditors for a six year term beginningon 1 July 2014.The General Assembly in 1946 established the UN Board of Auditors toaudit of the accounts of the United Nations organisation and its funds and programmesand to report its findings and recommendations to the Assembly through the AdvisoryCommittee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions.

    G.K. Pillai, the former Union Home Secretary on 1 November was appointed as theChairman of the MCX-SX. Thomas Mathew T, the former acting chairman of the LifeInsurance Corporation has also been appointed as the Vice President of thebourse.MCX-SX (MCX Stock Exchange Limited) is a new stock exchange of India.     Scientists discovered a black hole in a collection of stars in theconstellation Ophiuchus, which is about 22000 light years from Earth. The

    globular cluster in which black hole was spotted is known as M62. Theglobular cluster M62 is located in the constellation Ophiuchus.Thediscovery was done by the team of astronomers led by a Michigan StateUniversity professor. Black holes are stars that have died, collapsed intothemselves and possess such a strong gravitational field that even lightcannot escape from them.Prior to this discovery, astronomers hadassumptions that the black holes did not exist in globular clusters- some ofthe oldest and densest collections of stars in the universe.There arenumerous stars in such a condensed area that they often interact with oneanother. Massive black holes will have most violent encounters.

    RBI Permits Foreign Banks Subsidiary To Acquire Private Banks

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 6 November permitted the Wholly

    Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) of the foreign banks to acquire the domesticprivate sector banks. RBI also permitted the banks to set up branchesanywhere in the country.As per the permission given by RBI, the foreignbanks will have to seek permission of RBI to open branches in certainsensitive locations. The foreign bank subsidiaries have also been allowedto list on the local stock exchanges.     Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile Test Fired Successfully

    An advanced version of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile system wassuccessfully test fired by the Indian Army at the Pokhran test range inRajasthan on 18 November.The Block III variant of the Brahmos with deeppenetration capability was test launched from a Mobile AutonomousLauncher (MAL) deployed in full configuration with Mobile command Post(MCP).After being launched, the missile followed the predeterminedtrajectory and successfully pierced the designated concrete structure at

    bulls eye owing to sheer velocity of the missile.The launch hassuccessfully validated the deep penetration capability of the supersoniccruise missile system against hardened targets.The Block III variant ofland-attack Brahmos has already established its credence in achievingsupersonic steep dive with precision strike capability in mountainoperations.The army has inducted two regiments of the missile in itsarsenal, while the third regiment induction is in progress.The 290-kmBrahmos flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach and carries a conventional warheadof up to 300 kg.The missile can be launched from multiple platforms

    including land, sea, sub-sea and air.Both the army and vavy have alreadyinducted the missile in service, while the air-version of the weapon isscheduled to be flight tested by the Indian Air Force soon.

    India Successfully Test Fired Nuclear Capable Dhanush BallisticMissile

    India has successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Dhanush ballisticmissile from a naval ship off Odisha coast on 23 November. The surface-to-surface Dhanush, a naval variant of Indias indigenously developedPrithvi missile, was test fired from a location at Bay of Bengal by theStrategic Force Command of the defence force. The single-stage, liquidpropelled Dhanush has already been inducted into the armed services.

    Dhanush missile is capable of carrying conventional as well as nuclearpayload of 500 to 1000 kg and hit both land and sea-based targets.

    National Lok Adalat Settled Over 28 Lakh Cases Pending In India

    The National Lok Adalat organised throughout the country on 23 November2013 settled a record 28.26 lakh cases pending in various courts.The threeLok Adalat benches constituted in the Supreme Court settled 51 cases,

    while other benches across the country set a world record by amicablysettling over 28 lakh cases. Due to the ongoing assembly elections inMadhya Pradesh, the 7.97 lakh cases referred to the national Lok Adalatwould be taken up for disposal on the 30th November 2013.For the firsttime, Lok Adalats was held across the country in all courts including theSupreme Court and High Courts aiming to dispose of lakhs of cases in aday.Lok adalats are an alternative dispute resolution mechanism whereparties are encouraged to amicably settle cases outside the formal courtsystem. Generally, cases where parties can reach an amicable settlement,including bounced cheque and bank recovery cases, civil suits, motoraccident claims, service matters, family matters and traffic challan casesare taken up by lok adalats.
