On 28 April 2016 Tabassum Adnan, a women’s rights activist from Swat valley of Pakistan, won the prestigious Mandela - Graça Machel Innovation Award 2016 in Bogota, Colombia. She won the award for the individual activist category on the concluding day of the International Civil Society Week held from April 25-28. A victim of child marriage, Tabassum Adnan was married at the age of 13. The marriage which was marked by frequent domestic abuse, ended after 20 years when she gathered the courage to divorce her abusive husband.

On 30 April 2016 Union Minister for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal launched National LED programme - Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) in Madhya Pradesh. He launched the programme along with the state CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a function in Bhopal. The scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power. Under this, 3 crore LED Bulbs will be distributed in the next 6 months in the State. It will not only help reduce consumers their electricity bills but also contribute to the energy security of India.

In April 2016 National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) entered into collaboration with German government for a special programme on 'Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security'. It is part of the German government's recently introduced special initiative 'One World, No Hunger'. India is the only country in Asia chosen for this initiative. NABARD is anchoring two major programmes: soil conservation and rehabilitation of degraded land programme in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. It is also conducting innovation of watershed development and climate change adaptation programmes in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Germany’s 'One World, No Hunger' addresses areas such as food and nutrition security, promotion of innovation, protection and sustainable use of natural resources in rural areas.

On 28 April 2016 Indian Navy decommissioned Indian Naval Ships (INS) Veer and Nipat at a ceremony in the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The ceremony was held in the presence of Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command. These ships are the first of Veer Class of ships to be decommissioned from the Indian Navy. Both the ships, are 1241 RE class missile vessels, and have completed 29 and 28 years of commissioned service respectively. During their service, the ships have participated in numerous operations and successfully completed many deployments.
