L O C A T I O N A N D H I S T O R Y
The municipality of Jumilla is located in the north-east of the
Region of Murcia, with a climate characterized by sunshine, low
rainfall and cold winters, and has a population of approximately
25,000. The municipality occupies an area covering 972 km2 and
shares borders with the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and the
Community of Valencia.
The original settlement of Jumilla was at the top of the Cerro
del Castillo, the hill on which the castle stands, where there are
remains from as long ago as the Bronze Age and evidence of later
occupation by the Iberians and the Romans. During the period of
Moorish rule there is mention of “Jumalla”, a name derived from
“the strength of wine”. However, in 1358 Jumilla passed into the
hands of the Crown of Castile, and in 1445 became part of the
Estate of Villena. The roots of the present-day city, which began
to take shape in the fifteenth century and grew with significant
urban development in the next century, lay in the suburbs outside
the old walled city.

aJumilla es un municipio situado al Nordeste de la Región de
Murcia. Su población está en torno a los 25.000 habitantes. Su
clima es soleado y poco lluvioso, con inviernos fríos. Su término
ocupa 972 km2 y limita con Castilla la Mancha y Comunidad
Valenciana.
El núcleo original de Jumilla lo constituyó la cima del Cerro del
Castillo, donde aparecieron vestigios ya de la Edad del Bronce,
con ocupación sucesiva de íberos y romanos. En época andalusí
aparece la ciudad de Jumalla (la fuerza del vino), que en el siglo
XIII fue tomada por los cristianos y pasó a la corona de Aragón.
Sin embargo, el1358 se integró definitivamente en la corona
de Castilla, incluyéndose en 1445 en el Señorío de Villena. Los
arrabales de la antigua ciudad intramuros fueron el germen de
la ciudad actual, que empezó a conformarse a partir del siglo XV,
con un importante desarrollo urbanístico en el siglo siguiente.

IGLESIA DE “EL SALVADOR”
Construida en 1791 sobre la
antigua ermita de Nuestra Sra.
De Loreto. Es de estilo barroco
murciano. Su interior está
distribuido en tres naves. El
Retablo Mayor, de arquitectura
fingida, fue pintado por Pablo
Sistori. Alberga la imagen del
Stmo. Cristo de la Salud, obra
de un imaginero anónimo de
mediados del siglo XVIII.
CHURCH OF EL SALVADOR Built in 1791 on the remains of
the small church of Our Lady
of Loreto, the building is an
example of the Murcia baroque
style. The interior is made up
of three naves, and the trompe-
l’oeil high altarpiece was
painted by Pablo Sistori. The
church is home to the figure
of Holy Christ of Good Health
(Cristo de la Sallud), carved by
an anonymous sculptor in the
mid-18th century.
TEATRO VICODenominado así como
homenaje al actor del siglo XIX
Antonio Vico. Se construyó
en torno a 1883 en parte de
los solares del desamortizado
Convento de las Llagas de
San Francisco. El edificio
es obra del arquitecto Justo
Millán, que crea, dentro de
su conocida estética ecléctica,
una obra muy cercana tanto
en su interior como en su
exterior a la que realizara para
el Teatro Romea de Murcia.
Fue restaurado a finales de
los ochenta bajo el proyecto
del arquitecto Juan Antonio
Molina y en 2010 bajo el
proyecto del arquitecto Juan
de Dios de la Hoz.

To truly visit Jumilla is to immerse yourself in the culture, fiestas,
traditions and customs of a wine-growing region, to awaken the

discover its secrets, to stay in a rural environment and, of course,
to savour a good wine served with its rich gastronomy.
It is also to breathe and to feel its history, walking around its
streets and admire the contrasts of its natural landscapes.
T E A T R O V I C ONamed after the 19th-century actor Antonio Vico, the theatre was
built around 1883 on part of the site of the defunct Convent of Las
Llagas de San Francisco. The building was designed by architect
Justo Millán, who created, within his familiar eclectic aesthetic
style, a work which is very close both in its interior and exterior
design to the one he created at the Teatro Romea in the city of
Murcia. It was restored in the late 1980’s by Juan Antonio Molina
and in 2010 by Juan de Dios de la Hoz.

terno con un tradicional bal-
cón corrido de madera.

the “Santi Spiritu” Hospital,
the building played an
important role during the War
of Independence and was still in
use until the mid-19th century,
when it became the Town Hall.
In 1984 a magnificent wrought
iron balcony was added. It is
a two-storey building with
an elegant regal staircase, a
solemn Council Chamber and
a spacious interior patio with
a traditional wooden balcony
looking over it.

SECCIÓN DE CIENCIAS NATURALES Y ETNOGRAFÍA
Fundado en 1956 por D.
Jerónimo Molina García,
actualmente acoge las secciones
de Ciencias Naturales y
Etnografía con importantes
y muy completas colecciones
de entomología, esparto, loza,
farmacia, mineralogía, fósiles,
así como enseres relacionados
con oficios tradicionales
hoy desaparecidos. En la
sección de paleontología se
hace excepcional una amplia
colección de fósiles del término
municipal y las huellas de
animales prehistóricos de los
yacimientos de la Hoya de la
Sima y Sierra de las Cabras.

The musuem was founded in
1956 by Jerónimo Molina García,
and the building currently houses
the sections of Natural Sciences
and Ethnography, containing
important and extremely
comprehensive collections of
entomology, esparto, pottery,
pharmacy, mineralogy and fossils,
as well as equipment relating to
old trades now long disappeared.
The highlights of the Paleontology
section are a large collection
of fossils collected within the
municipality and prehistoric
animal paw-prints from the sites
of La Hoya de la Sima and Sierra de
las Cabras.

CASA HONDA/CASA DEL ARTESANO
Construida en el primer
tercio del siglo XVI en estilo
renacentista, conserva todo
su valor artístico en el patio
interior con cuatro columnas
de piedra, que sostienen una
decoración con yeserías. El
techo de la vivienda está
decorado con revoltones de
yeso, con relieves al gusto
italiano. Rehabilitada en 2007
es cedida a la Asociación de
Artesanos de Jumilla para Casa
del Artesano.

style, the building’s artistic
wealth is well preserved
in the courtyard, with four
stone columns supporting
plasterwork decoration. The
ceiling of the house features
small decorative plaster vaults
with Italianate reliefs. It was
renovated in 2007 and donated
to the Jumilla Association of
Craftsmen as the Craftsman’s
Guild.

Palacio renacentista de finales
del S.XVI. Fachada con rejas
castellanas y tejadillos re-
matadas con escudos de armas,
sostenidos por sendos leones
rampantes. Sobre la puerta
descansa una cornisa que sirve
de apoyo a un frontón partido
en el que aparece el escudo de
armas de Pérez de los Cobos.

A late 16th century Renaissance
mansion, in which the façade
has Castilian window grilles
and pent roofs finished with
coats of arms supported by
lions rampant. Above the door
there is a cornice supporting
a divided pediment upon
which the coat of arms of the
Pérez de los Cobos family is
depicted. The building is being
refurbished.

S.XVI; situándose al norte el
Palacio del Concejo y la ermita
de San José, al oeste la Posada,

PALACIO DEL CONCEJO. SECCIÓN ARQUEOLÓGICA
MUSEO “JERÓNIMO MOLINA”
Construido por el arquitecto
Julián de Alamíquez a
mediados del s. XVI, es el
único edificio de carácter civil
de estilo renacentista que
se conserva en la Región de
Murcia. Su planta baja daba
cobijo a la lonja. El segundo
cuerpo está compuesto por
una arcada de columnas
salomónicas flanqueadas por
las armas de la villa. En su
parte posterior se encontraba
la cárcel.
Tras su rehabilitación, alberga
el Museo Arqueológico con
colecciones que van desde el
Paleolítico a la Edad Media,
guardando piezas de arte
ibérico como el cipo funerario
de los “Jinetes Ibéricos de
Coimbra del Barranco Ancho”.

Built by architect Julián
de Alamíquez in the mid-
16th century, this is the
only Renaissance-style civic
building remaining in the
Region of Murcia. Originally
the ground floor was home to
the food market, the Council
Chamber was on the first floor,
which features an arcade of
wreathed columns flanked on
either side by the town coat
of arms, and the top floor was
used as the town jail.
Since its restoration it has been
home to the Archaeological
Museum, whose collections
range from the Palaeolithic to
the Middle Ages and include
items of Iberian art such as the
“Iberian Horsemen of Coimbra
del Barranco Ancho” memorial
stone.

La cofradía de Jesús Nazareno
tiene su origen en 1801 y
actualmente está formada por
8 hermandades. Su temática
en torno al arte cofrade y
religioso se expresa a través de
la imaginaría y la arquitectura
suntuaria, incluyendo además
otras artes decorativas, cruces,
estandartes, túnicas, faroles,
mantos, etc., todo expuesto
en su interior. En él destaca,
su fachada y su cúpula de
estilo levantino. El edificio fue
construido en 2010.

The “Jesus Nazareno”
brotherhood was founded in
1801 and is nowadays formed
by 8 fraternities which take
part in the annual Easter Week
processions of Jumilla. The
exhibits in the museum, which
was built in 2010, are based on
the brotherhood and religious
art, expressed through the
imaginative and sumptuous
architecture and also including
other decorative arts in the
form of crosses, standards,
tunics, lanterns, cloaks, etc.
The Levantine façade and dome
are the outstanding features of
the exterior.
ERMITA DE SAN JOSÉConstruida a finales del S.
XVII, pertenece al denominado
“barroco murciano”. Es
de reducidas dimensiones,
constando de una sola nave
con una pequeña cúpula
decorada con yeserías de
rostros llorosos, al igual que el
dintel de la puerta principal.

Built at the end of the 17th
century in the Murciano
baroque style, the church is
a small one, containing just
a single nave and a small
dome which is decorated with
weeping faces in plaster, as is
the lintel of the main door.

Comenzó a construirse en1447
en estilo gótico del que se
conserva la nave central y las
ocho capillas laterales. En
1575 se construye el portal
principal, bajo la dirección del
arquitecto Julián de Alamíquez.
El grandioso retablo, de los
hermanos Francisco y Diego
Ayala, fue construido en
1583 y representa la vida del
Apóstol Santiago. En 1747 se
inician las obras de la sacristía
nueva de estilo barroco, unas
de las mejores del rococó
de mediados del S. XVIII.
La puerta norte es obra del
arquitecto Lorenzo Alonso,
de estilo Neoclásico con dos
grandes columnas jónicas,
iniciándose las obras en 1793 y
terminándose en 1804.

Construction of the church
began in 1447 in the Gothic
style, as can still be seen in
the central nave and eight
side chapels. The main door
was added in 1575 under the
guidance of architect Julian
de Alamíquez, while the
altarpiece, dating from 1583, is
the work of brothers Francisco
and Diego de Ayala and was
dedicated to Saint James the
Apostle. In 1747 work began
on the new, baroque-style
sacristy, one of the finest
examples of the mid-18th
century rococo style. The
north door was designed by
Lorenzo Alonso and is neo-
classical in style, with two
large ionic columns: work on
this structure began in 1793
and was completed in 1804.

predicaciones de San Vicente
Ferrer, y levantada sobre una
necrópolis islámica y zona
industrial de los S. XII y XIII.
En ella se reunían los vecinos
para votar los cargos oficiales
de la villa. Fue derruida en
1979, conservándose la torre
principal.

The church was built in 1430,
after San Vicente Ferrer
preached in Jumilla, on the
site of a former Islamic burial
ground and a 12th and 13th
century business district. The
locals used to meet here to
elect the local officials, but the
main building was demolished
in 1979 and only the main
tower remains.
CASTILLODe larga historia; íbera,
romana, musulmana, de la
que quedan huellas en sus
murallas, fue ganado por el rey
Alfonso X para los cristianos
en 1241. Incorporado durante
apenas medio siglo a la
Corona de Aragón, fue tomado
definitivamente para la Corona
de Castilla por el infante D.
Fadrique de Trastámara.En
1461, el marqués de Villena
levantó la fortaleza que hoy
conocemos. La imponente
Torre del Homenaje es una
construcción gótica con tres
pisos, sótano y terraza; que
presenta planta redondeada
para amortiguar el impacto
de los proyectiles. Restaurado
y rehabilitado en 2010 como
espacio cultural, en él se
pueden visualizar exposiciones
y se celebran eventos varios.
Desde su mirador el visitante
podrá contemplar hermosas
vistas de todo el término de
Jumilla.
T H E C A S T L EThe castle of Jumilla has a
long history, taking in the
Iberians, the Romans and the
Moors, traces of all of whom
can be seen in the walls, but
was conquered by King Alfonso
X for the Christian forces in
1241. For just half a century
it belonged to the Crown of
Aragon, before being taken for
good for the Crown of Castile
by the Infante Don Fadrique de
Trastàmara.
In 1461, the Marquis de Villena
built the fortress that we see
today. The imposing keep is
a Gothic structure with three
floors, a basement and a
terrace, with rounded corners
to cushion the impact of
bullets and cannonballs. It was
restored and refurbished in
2010 as a cultural venue where
exhibitions and various events
are held.
From this vantage point,
visitors can admire spectacular
views of much of the large
municipality of Jumilla.

CALLEJÓN DEL FISCALEs la calle más antigua de
Jumilla, que data de los siglos
XII y XIII, según la excavación
arqueológica de 1990. El
callejón se extendía desde el
interior árabe del atrio de Santa
María, terminando en una
maqbara o necrópolis islámica.
C A L L E J O N D E L F I S C A LThis is the oldest street in
Jumilla, dating from between
the 12th and 13th centuries,
according to an archaeological
excavation in 1990, and is an
alley which originally ran from
the Arab interior of the atrium
of Santa María to a “maqbara”
(or Islamic burial ground).
ARCO DE SAN ROQUE, PUERTA DE GRANADA
Se edificó en el año 1642 para
sustituir la antigua ermita de
madera destruida en 1603 y que
servía como puerta de salida hacia
el antiguo camino de Granada.
Está dedicada a San Roque, santo
protector de las epidemias de
peste.
Conserva en su interior antiguo
piso de azulejos valencianos del
siglo XVII.
Rehabilitada en 2007. Actualmente
sólo se abre para la procesión del
día de San Roque el 16 de agosto,
una tradición de 1592.

Built in 1642 to replace a
wooden chapel which was
destroyed in 1603, and which
used to serve as the gateway
from the town to the old road
to Granada, this archway is
dedicated to San Roque, the
saint who is said to protect
against the plague. Inside
there is a 17th century tiled
floor made in Valencia.
The building was restored
in 2007, but the only time it
opens is on the feast day of
San Roque (16th August) for a
procession which has been a
tradition in Jumilla since 1592.
ERMITA DE SAN ANTÓNEdificada en 1611 a las afueras
de la villa y al margen derecho
del camino de Granada. Su
interior está decorado con
yeserías de estilo rococó
que adornan la bóveda y
ventanales así como remarcan
la cruz de San Antón en las
cuatro esquinas de la base del
cupulín. Preside su interior un
escudo real con el Toisón de
Oro. Restaurada en 2002.

This church was built in
1611 in the outskirts of the
city, on the right of the road
to Granada. The interior
decoration includes rococo-
style plasterwork on the
vaulted ceiling and around the
windows, and Saint Anthony’s
cross on the four corners at the
base of the dome. Presiding
over the interior is a royal
coat of arms with the Golden
Fleece. Restored in 2002.
JARDÍN DEL REY D. PEDRODiseñado hacia finales del
S. XIX como explanada para
albergar la Feria, recibió el
nombre de Plaza del Rey D.
Pedro. Fue decorado entre
los años 40 y 60 con azulejos
sevillanos de Ramos Rejano
con motivos del Quijote y con
personajes de Disney. En el
podemos admirar algunos de
sus pinos centenarios.
T H E G A R D E N O F K I N G P E D R O
This public park was designed
towards the end of the 19th
century to be used as the
fairground and was named the
Plaza del Rey D. Pedro (King
Pedro’s Square). Between
the 1940’s and 1960’s it was
decorated with Seville tiling by
Ramos Rejano, featuring scenes
from Don Quixote and Disney
characters, and there are
also a number of magnificent
centuries-old pine trees.
EL CASÓNEs el monumento funerario
tardorromano (S.V) mejor
conservado de la Europa del
Imperio Romano. En su interior
conserva tres fosas donde
estuvieron depositados los
sarcófagos. Es de una sola nave
de bóveda de medio punto, con
dos absidiolos a ambos lados
con dos pequeñas ventanas. Su
puerta principal está orientada
a la salida del sol. Las cubiertas
están realizadas en mortero de
piedra y recubierto con “Opus
Signinum”. Es Monumento
Nacional desde 1931.

is the best preserved of its kind
to have survived from the Late
Roman Empire, and was declared
a National Monument in 1931.
Containing three graves where
the sarcophagi were placed, it is
made up of a single room with
a semicircular dome and apses
on either side, with two small
windows. The main door faces
the rising sun.
The roofing is mortar topped
with “Opus Signinum”.

camino de Granada. La primitiva
ermita se edificó en 1570.
Reformada en el S. XVIII para
adaptarla al culto de la patrona
de Jumilla, Nuestra Sra. De
la Asunción. La ermita tiene
dos cúpulas barrocas, una la
del altar mayor y otra en el
camarín de Nuestra Señora.

This is the last of the churches
which used to line the road to
Granada, and the original chapel
was built in 1570.
In the 18th century it was
renovated and adapted to house
the figure of Our Lady of the
Assumption, the patroness of
Jumilla. The church has two
baroque domes, one above the
high altar and the other above
the chapel of Our Lady.
CAPILLA-MUSEO DE LA COFRADÍA DEL ROLLO
La capilla, situada en el
marco de la barriada que da
nombre a la Cofradía, ha sido
construida según proyecto del
arquitecto jumillano Tomás
Menor Pérez, siguiendo el
trazado regulador de la Capilla
de Pazzi, de Bruneslleschi
(Florencia S. XV). Destaca el
gran portón principal, de 6
metros de altura, realizado a
base de perfiles tubulares de
hierro y carrerones de madera
noble, cuyo motivo central es
la insignia de la Cofradía.

“ E L R O L L O ”The chapel is located in the
neighborhood known as the
“Rollo”, which gives its name
to the Brotherhood. It was built
by a local architect from Jumilla
called Tomás Menor Pérez, who
followed the design for the 15th
century Pazzi Chapel in Florence
by architect Brunelleschi.
Especially noteworthy is the
large main door, which is 6
meters high and is made of iron
tubular sections and fine wood
panels with a central motif of
the insignia of the Brotherhood.

soil quality has allowed the
species planted here to grow
quickly, and this is now one
of the most popular botanical
gardens in the Region of Murcia,
the most outstanding specimens
being some magnificent conifers.
The garden occupies an area of
34,900 m2 and there are more
than 150 ornamental tree and
bush species which are typical
both of Jumilla and of the south-
east and other parts of Spain.
TORRE DEL RICOSituado en la pedanía del
mismo nombre, fue construido
en 1573 y es uno de los pocos
realizados en piedra de
sillería de la zona. Se trata
de construcción fortificada
mandada a construir, tal como
se lee en la inscripción de la
puerta, por Antonio Rico para
dar seguridad a la repoblación
de los campos circundantes.

few made in stone in the area.
It is a fortified building which
was built, as the inscription on
the door reads, on the orders of

SIERRA DE SANTA ANABuena parte de su espectacular

natural beauty and environmental
value, with the “Picacho del
Infierno” summit at 1,079
metres above sea level. One of the

un monte singular con vestigios

piedras (camino histórico de
Ontur), pinturas rupestres
(declaradas Patrimonio de

conducir el agua a un gran
calderón.
S I E R R A D E L A P E D R E R A The “Sierra de La Pedrera” (764
m.) is a unique mountainous
area, dotted with historic and
prehistoric remains.
Among them are the vestiges
of medieval quarries, tracks
left on the rocky ground by
carts carrying heavy building
stones (the historic road to
Ontur), cave paintings which
are included in the World
Heritage site and prehistoric
petroglyphs, or rounded holes
carved into the rock to channel
water into a large container.

can be admired from forest
tracks and a well-marked
path which run through them.
There are two recreation areas
which are the starting point for
several hiking trails.
At the heart of the Sierra stands
the 16th century Convent of
Santa Ana, alongside the Fuente
de la Jarra, a unique spot which
was chosen by the Franciscan
Order for their convent in the
late 16th century. The convent
boasts an important, ancient
and valuable cultural heritage
in both historical and artistic
terms, with items from all
around the world, but the
highlights are the statues of
Cristo Amarrado a la Columna
(Christ tied to the Whipping
Post), which was sculpted by
Francisco Salzillo in the 18th
century, XVIII), the Cristo de
la Reja and the Abuelica Santa
Ana.

LA CAÑADAREAL. ITINERARIO ECOTURÍSTICOEsta vía pecuaria forma parte
de la red de tránsito de ganado
que partía desde la serranía de
Cuenca hasta Murcia. Se trata
de un recorrido lineal de más
de 45 km que se inicia en el
paraje de Los Almendros, en
el límite con la provincia de
Albacete hasta la pedanía de
Román.
A lo largo del camino se
encuentran paisajes variados,
yacimientos arqueológicosy
numerosos puntos de interés
etnográfico comolos hornos de
yeso de la Cuesta del Llano, el
salero del Águila, la Fuente del

of a route which led from
Serranía de Cuenca in central
Spain to Murcia.
The stretch which lies in the
municipality of Jumilla is
45 kilometres long and runs
in a more or less straight
line from Los Almendros,
on the boundary with the
province of Albacete, to the
hamlet of Román. Along the
way are varying landscapes,
archaeological sites, and
several points of ethnographic
interest, such as the plaster
kilns of de La Cuesta del llano,
the Salero del Aguila salt pans,
the Fuente del Cerco and the
reservoir of Román.

SEMANA SANTADeclarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. Su origen se
remonta a finales del siglo XVI, peroes a partir de 1848, cuando
la Semana Santa Jumillana toma gran fuerza y se crean nuevas
hermandades que desfilan junto con la Vera Cruz, hermandad
más antigua.
La Semana de Pasión comienza el Viernes de Dolores, con un
solemne Vía Crucis y finaliza el Domingo de Resurrección con la
procesión de Jesús Resucitado.
En Semana Santa podrán admirar las tallas de alto valor
artístico, que se remontan al siglo XVII. La tarde de Mantillas de
Jueves Santo, los desfiles de Armaos en la mañana del Domingo
de Resurrección, y las Tamboradas de Sábado de Gloria y Sábado
de Pasión.

H O L Y W E E KThe Easter celebrations in Jumilla, which have been awarded
National Tourist Interest status, date back to the late 16th
century, but it was not until 1848 that new Brotherhoods started
to be created, and since then the event has become larger and
more important. These new groups parade alongside the “Vera
Cruz”, the oldest Brotherhood.
Holy Week begins on the Friday before Palm Sunday, known as
“Friday of Sorrows”, with a “Vía Crucis”, and finishes with the
procession of the “Resucitado” (Christ Risen) on Easter Sunday.
During Semana Santa onlookers can admire the highly artistic
sculpted figures being paraded, some of which date from the 17th
century, with highlights including the evening of “Mantillas”
(traditional ladies’ headdresses) on Maundy Thursday, the
parades of “Armaos” (period costumed soldiers) on Easter Sunday
morning and the “Tamboradas” (drumming celebrations) on
both Saturdays included in the week.

fue frontera entre dos pueblos, el musulmán y el cristiano.

its medieval past for a few days. The streets of the town are filled
with historical figures, events and parades to commemorate the
development of Jumilla during the time when it was a border
town between the Muslim and Christian worlds.
FERIA Y FIESTAS EN HONOR DE NUESTRA PATRONA LA VIRGEN DE LA ASUNCIÓN
Durante la semana de feria, en torno al 15 de agosto, se vive un
ambiente festivo continuo con eventos y actividades para todas
las edades. El Excmo. Ayuntamiento y otros colectivos como la
Cofradía de la Virgen, Federación de Peñas, Festival de Folklore,
Asociación de Moros y Cristianos son los artífices de la fiesta.

Throughout the week of the fair, which is held around the feast
day of the Assumption on 15th August, there is a festive atmosphere
with events and activities for all ages. These are organized by
the Town Hall and other groups such as the Brotherhood of
the Virgin, the Federation of Wine Harvest Festivities, the Folk
Festival and the Moors and Christians Association.
FIESTA DE LA VENDIMIA Declarada de Interés Turístico Regional, se celebran desde 1972.
Ambiente festivo de devoción al vino y su cultura, haciendo
un recorrido por la vendimia, la pisa, la elaboración y la
degustación. Los actos más relevantes son: La inauguración de
la fuente del vino, la ofrenda del primer mosto al Niño de las
Uvas, las cabalgatas infantil y tradicional y el último sábado de
feria se celebra la gran cabalgata del vino.

since 1972. Are characterized by a festive atmosphere of devotion
to Jumilla wine and the culture associated with it. The events
follow the wine-making process from picking through treading
and production to tasting, and the stand-out events are the
inauguration of the wine fountain, the offering of the first grape
juice of the season to the statue of the Niño de las Uvas, the
children’s and traditional parades and, on the last Saturday of
the fiestas, the main wine parade (the Gran Cabalgata del Vino),
when participants are showered in thousands of litres of wine.
FESTIVAL NACIONAL DE FOLKLORE “CIUDAD DE JUMILLA”.
Desde 1982, el Festival Nacional de Folklore “Ciudad de Jumilla”,
abre sus puertas al abanico de música, danza, tradiciones y rico
colorido que ofrecen los grupos participantes, venidos de toda la
geografía nacional. El festival, el desfile de los participantes, la
velada folk, la misa cantada por los grupos y las manifestaciones
de folklore en la calle, completan un atrayente programa, repleto
de tradición, colorido y espectáculo.
“ C I T Y O F J U M I L L A ” N A T I O N A L F O L K F E S T I V A LThe National Folklore Festival “Ciudad de Jumilla” has been
held since 1982, opening its doors to the range of music, dance,
traditions and rich colour offered by participating groups from all
over Spain. The festival program is completed by the parade of
the participants, special folk evenings, a choral Mass performed
by the groups and folk performances in the streets, making this
a colourful and traditional spectacle.

The gastronomic richness is a result
of the area’s mix of cultures and the
quality of local produce.
Highlights include traditional dishes
such as gazpacho, “Pelotas” or “relleno”
(meatballs in consommé), empanadas
de patata (potato pasties) and fried goat
cheese with tomato. It is also difficult
not to be tempted by the numerous
sweet dishes, which include “sequillos”,
“pirusas”, and “cristóbalas”.

distinguishes DO Jumilla wines
from others is that they are
made from the Monastrell
variety of grape, which grows
on over 80% of the area
