PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

American College of Sports Medicine (Associate Fellow, Fellow) American Physiological Society National Academy of Kinesiology [formerly American Academy of Physical Education,# 124, (Fellow) American Association for the Advancement of Science American Heart Asssociation , [(Fellow: Council on Circulation), (Fellow: Council on Basic Science) American Society for Gravitational Biology International Society for Gravitational Physiology Kappa Delta Pi (Springfield College) Phi Epsilon Kappa (University of Iowa) PROGRAMS ESTABLISHED 1963-4 A Ph.D. interdisciplinary program in Exercise Science was established with an emphasis on exercise physiology at the University of Iowa that included the Departments of Physical Education –Men; Physiology and Biophysics; Anatomy; Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Zoology It was endorsed by the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Medicine while receiving funding from both Colleges, the Graduate College, the National Defense Education Act, National Institute of Health, NASA Headquarters, the Department of Athletics, the Iowa Medical Association, the Iowa Heart Association, the Iowa Athletic Association, and the American College of Sclerotherapy. Program required graduate students to have completed undergraduate courses in mathematics, inorganic and organic chemistry, and physics before enrolling in graduate level courses in physiology (medical), exercise physiology, topics in exercise physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, histology or cellular physiology, statistics, physiology electives, required physical education graduate courses, and one foreign language. It is of interest that the first renewal of the NIH training grant received the comment that “the standards created have an unusually high drop out rate” 1972-73 Chaired a Committee to develop a curriculum for a Masters Degree in Physiology and Biophysics 1981-82 Co-Chair with Dr. Michael Brody to develop a 6 year Curriculum for securing a MD degree after high school. It was not well received or adopted by the faculty of the Medical School. 1986 As Head of the Department, established an undergraduate B.S. degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University of Arizona. When the Department was abolished and the faculty was amalgamated into other units, the curriculum served as the template for a BS degree in physiology.
