API Bolting Specification Requirements

• In response to BSEE requests, API is implementing new bolting spec requirements to prevent H-embrittlement failures in marine environments (subsea and surface)

• The issue is being addressed somewhat independently in each of the API SC’s

• This is leading to similar, but different requirements

• For example, low alloy steel bolting max hardness• API 6A – Only for NACE sour service and the limits in the ASTM specs • API 16A – 4th Ed being drafted will spec 34HRC max and API 20E &

API 20F (includes references back to API 6A)• API 17D – 35 HRC max (includes references back to ISO 10423 / 6A) • API 20E – 34 HRC max (but no explanation why it is there)

What can API SC6 do to support the BSEE requests?

• API 6A 21st Edition can include a reference to API 20E

• API 6A 21st Edition can include a reference to API 20F

• In the future, a full stand-alone API bolting document could be developed to be referenced by all SCs• Would avoid references to API 6A• Could cover design, materials, and quality
