2019 Trends to Watch forTelecoms Operations and ITIt’s an annual affair for Ovum, to have packed meetings, briefings and presentations, reflecting on key developments, trends and rumors at Mobile World Congress...
MWC has always been known as a specialized conference for the
telco industry, but this has somehow changed this year. It is now one of the world’s greatest showcases of enterprise technology and emerging trends ranging from artificial intelligence to the long-awaited 5G connectivity.
The overarching theme at this year’s MWC was 5G. This was not unexpected, given that we are currently in the 5G investment and commercialization cycle. However, perhaps more noteworthy were the specific IT technologies and operations that were highlighted as key building blocks in this bigger 5G story.
Telco IT and operations topics were much more in evidence this year than in previous years. This is mainly because communications service providers (CSPs) will totally need new IT platforms and operations structures as well as cloud-native architectures if they are to develop, deliver, manage, and monetize new 5G services. Ovum has highlighted three key takeaways from MWC19.
Transforming Operating ModelsWhat operations changes are
we seeing more of? Green field investments by the likes of new Japanese operator and e-commerce company Rakuten are still the exception to the rule, but we are seeing significant investment by CSPs seeking to transform their legacy systems, such as Telefonica UK’s end-to-end BSS/OSS suite deal with NEC/Netcracker. Also, judging from conversations at MWC19 with vendors and operators, a broad mix of cloud-native transformations is finally being embarked on rather than just talked about. DevOps, continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD), microservices architectures and containerization, big data management, and AI - all these have made it onto the to-do list for the major CSPs. This is partly because 5G requires a totally different set of structures to enable and monetize new services.Collaboration, Partnering, and Open APIs
Collaboration and partnering is the second theme Ovum is highlighting
here. Collaboration has been building up a head of steam for several years now, but this year felt that much more intense, especially with hub and lab announcements. This is partly driven by the fact that so many 5G-based business models will depend on diverse partner ecosystems. There was also an interesting twist to the collaboration theme at MWC19 in the shape of open APIs not just being opened up to third parties, but also feeding back into CSPs’ internal operations. Open APIs do not just support cross-industry developer collaboration; they can also facilitate easier link-ups between vendors as we saw at MWC.Massive Impact of AIon Network Automation
Finally, we come to the growing impact of AI on operations. AI featured as one of the big themes at this year’s event, and as we have been hearing, AI increasingly permeates everything, driven partly by the need for the technology to support the speed and scale of the 5G world. There was a particularly big focus on the automated network management use cases of AI

Bridging the Digital Dividein Asia PacificAs the digital revolution steps up a gear, the reliance on broadband remainsconstant, says Richard Walshe, Regional Sales Director for the Pacific at Newtec...
Digital DreamThe need for ‘always on’ connectivity
is also spreading to every corner of the world, with new applications emerging to entice new users. While the widespread demand is there, the access to services is often not. So, how can citizens gain the same level of access to services that those in densely populated and developed areas so readily enjoy?
Enter SatelliteSatellite is often the only way to
provide fast and effective access to online services. The proof of this can be seen in its deployment in hard to reach areas and with the right infrastructure, combining effective use of the latest satellite technologies with the right service providers locally, new and significant clusters of users can be connected and set free.
When it comes to the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, many communities are often separated by ocean. This divide is not just physical, it also acts as a huge barrier to broadband access, something that only satellite can broach.
At Newtec, we are channeling our focus in the APAC region by building and nurturing new and existing relationships which will reveal new and lucrative opportunities for our partners and customers. By working closely with our contacts to develop their offering with our technologies, we are succeeding in our mission to grow access to broadband to connect more communities than ever before, whilst adding value along the way.
The kinds of geographical landscapes in which we work in present huge potential for growth in strategic partnerships - and it is always our pleasure to be able to work alongside those growing their networks by tapping into previously underserved areas. Newtec’s Satellite Network Calculator and its acute ability to provide insight into the efficiency of the networks is just one of the ways that we can offer cost effective access to highly tuned and optimized networks for our partners.
Strategic MissionsThe emergence of High Throughput
Satellites (HTS) has also brought substantial possibilities to new geographies within APAC and this is something that Newtec is at the forefront of enabling.
Newtec’s recent partnership with Broadband satellite operator Kacific, entailed a $10 million investment in Newtec Dialog hubs to power its new Kacific1 HTS.
By using Newtec’s Mx-DMA return technology, the highest possible bandwidth efficiency can be provided to power a host of new services across South East Asia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Due to the physical challenges of connecting islands such as these, satellite was the only way to deliver the kinds of levels of bandwidth required.
The Kacific1 satellite features 56 high power subscriber spot beams, which each can offer targeted capacity at high
speeds. In its partnership with Newtec, Kacific was able to launch high-demand applications, such as community internet access, mobile backhaul, a much-needed service to empower improvements in areas including healthcare, education and civil defense - which is far beyond the reach of traditional broadband infrastructures.
“The Kacific HUB, based on the Newtec Dialog multiservice platform, is a pivotal part of the satellite network and we selected Newtec because it demonstrates the highest performance and ability to offer the very high link efficiencies and availabilities required for our Ka-band spot beam system,” said Christian Patouraux, CEO and Founder of Kacific.
“We have also been very impressed with other unique features offered by Newtec such as the Satellite Network Calculator, which enables us to tailor new services in a very efficient and fast-to-market manner, which will only
help ensure the reliability and enhance the quality of our services to our customers.”
The agreement will strengthen Newtec’s presence in the APAC region and provide internet access to potentially millions of new users in the first few years of its service alone.
“In partnering with Kacific, we are strengthening our presence in South East Asia and the Pacific and we are extremely proud to be involved with a project that bridges the digital divide to people in regions that have never before had access,” said Thomas Van den Driessche, CEO at Newtec.
The attractiveness of satellite technologies to connect scattered locations was also validated by a second significant partnership with teleport and Internet Service Provider (ISP), SATSOL. SATSOL is one of three ISPs operating in the Solomon Islands, Oceania. Made up of six main islands and clusters of more than 900 smaller islands, the mission to deliver efficient broadband connections at each was considerable. With the backing of its local government in a concerted effort to improve Internet and ICT provision for the islands in its National Development Strategy over a twenty-year period, SATSOL selected the Newtec Dialog platform to expand its coverage of remote sites as it needed.
“SATSOL is a locally owned company and we know just how important it is to stay connected to the rest of the world and the impact that this can have on quality of life and the economy,” said Antony Ferris, CEO at SATSOL. “The installation of Newtec Dialog has enabled us to replace a double hop link with just a single hop. Newtec’s Mx-DMA technology has enabled us to optimize our bandwidth usage and to transform the overall user experience in a cost-effective way.”

The BBC and BT have successfully delivered the UK’s first live
TV contribution over a public 5G connection, using EE’s 5G network.
During a segment on BBC Breakfast, BBC technology correspondent Rory
Cellan-Jones covered the launch of the UK’s first 5G network from Covent Garden. The piece was also beamed back to BBC New Broadcasting House over the same 5G network to be played out live in the show.
It was the first time a public 5G network has been used by a production team for a live TV program.
Live outside contributions form a major part of news, current affairs and sport. They can be sent back to production studios in a variety of ways including
existing 4G networks. 4G network links require multiple connections to provide the capacity to carry the live video feeds. In this 5G trial only one connection was needed, reducing both the complexity and cost of the production.
Specialized 5G modems were connected to BBC News cameras to take advantage of the new 5G network. The trial also allowed the teams to explore different encoding options to compress the video, allowing it to be sent back to New Broadcasting House, and decompressing it for live playout.
